Xbox names Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome among the browsers for playing Xbox Cloud Gaming at xbox.com. There is no published head-to-head PC test establishing that either is universally faster or more reliable. If you want to try Edge’s Clarity Boost image feature, start with Edge; otherwise, choose a current browser supported by your computer and troubleshoot your connection, device, and controller if play is poor.
Which browsers can you use on a PC?
Xbox lists Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Safari as browser examples for cloud gaming on Xbox’s cloud-gaming page. That list does not mean Safari is available for Windows: use a browser supported by your operating system. Browser support and service availability may change, so check Xbox’s page for current information.

To start, visit xbox.com/play and sign in with the Microsoft account you intend to use. Access depends on the game, account or subscription eligibility, and supported-region availability. Xbox says selected free-to-play games can be played with a free Microsoft account in a supported region; other access may depend on an eligible subscription and the supported-game catalog.

Xbox’s published guidance does not compare Edge and Chrome on PC for latency, image quality, or reliability. There is no evidence here to call either one the universal performance winner. Your connection, location, device, and setup can affect how a session performs, so a browser name alone cannot establish the cause of lag.

When Edge may be worth trying
Microsoft offers Clarity Boost in Edge to enhance graphics for Xbox Cloud Gaming on PC. Treat it as an image-quality option, not proof that Edge has lower latency or better overall performance. When Chrome may be the better choice for you
If Chrome is already your preferred browser and you do not need Edge’s Clarity Boost, it is a reasonable supported option to try. That is a convenience choice, not a claim that Chrome outperforms Edge. Use a current version of whichever supported browser you test.

Check your connection, controller, and access
Connection
Xbox says its best-performance guidance for PCs, consoles, and tablets is 20 Mbps, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Xbox Wire also recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable connection and wired Ethernet where possible. These are recommendations, not guarantees of a particular resolution, low latency, or uninterrupted play. See Xbox Wire’s getting-started guidance.

- If you use Wi-Fi, try a 5 GHz network when available.
- If your computer and router can be connected by cable, try wired Ethernet.
- Change one condition at a time so you can tell whether a connection change affects your session.
Controller and game input
Xbox’s setup guidance calls for a compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB. Check whether you already have a compatible game controller before buying one. Selected games support Xbox touch controls, but touch input is not available for every game.

Account and game eligibility
If a game will not launch, confirm that you are signed into the intended account and that the title, account or subscription, and region are eligible. Browser choice cannot resolve an access restriction caused by the catalog or regional availability.

Because Xbox’s published guidance does not provide a controlled browser-versus-browser PC benchmark, you can make a practical comparison on your own computer. It will tell you what works better in your conditions, not establish a universal ranking.

- Choose the supported browsers available for your operating system and update them.
- Use the same computer, network, game, account, and controller for each session.
- Play for a comparable period in each browser and note visible image quality, control responsiveness, interruptions, and any errors.
- If you are comparing Edge’s Clarity Boost, account for it as a graphics feature rather than assuming it changes overall stream performance.
- If one session is poor, repeat after changing only one factor, such as switching from Wi-Fi to Ethernet. This helps separate browser differences from connection changes.
