Choose Safari if you want your browsing to fit into Apple’s ecosystem; choose Chrome if your bookmarks, passwords, tabs and settings already revolve around a Google Account. Then check the details that can change the decision: iPhone default-browser settings, work/personal separation, extension availability and privacy controls. Neither browser is a universal winner, and the documented feature lists are not a head-to-head test of speed, battery life or privacy.
Start with the account and sync you already use
The practical choice is often less about which browser has the longest feature list and more about where you want your browsing data to live.

- Start with Safari if you want Apple-device continuity. Apple says Safari can sync passwords, bookmarks, history and tabs across Apple devices, and Handoff can pass Safari activity between nearby devices. See Apple’s Safari iCloud setup guidance.
- Start with Chrome if your browser workflow already centers on a Google Account. Google says Chrome Sync can save bookmarks, history, open tabs, passwords and settings to that account for use on other devices. See Google’s Chrome Sync instructions.
These are vendor-described feature sets, not independent comparisons of sync reliability or privacy. Before choosing, decide which account you want associated with the data and which categories you actually want to sync.

You do not have to use Safari as the default browser on iPhone. Apple’s current guidance says the setting is under Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App. Choose an installed browser from the list. Google says Chrome can be set as the iPhone default on iOS 14 or later; follow Google’s Chrome setup instructions for iPhone and iPad if you need help.

Apple notes that browser-choice prompts and some default-app features vary by region. The available options can also depend on your device’s software and which browsers are installed, so check the settings on your own iPhone rather than assuming a particular prompt will appear. Apple’s overview is Change your default apps for features on iPhone and iPad.
Check whether work and personal browsing can stay separate
If you need a fast way to keep work Gmail apart from personal browsing, verify how your chosen browser handles separate contexts. One reader described the need as “one browser on Mac and iOS with solid sync” and a way to “separate work gmail from personal”; that is an example of the question, not evidence that it is a common preference.

Safari profiles
Safari profiles can separate history, cookies, website data, extensions, Tab Groups and favorites. Apple says profiles sync across supported Apple devices running Safari 17 or later when they are signed in to the same Apple Account with Safari enabled in iCloud. A site may ask you to sign in again in a new profile because cookies and website data are separate. Check Apple’s instructions for creating and using Safari profiles for the current setup steps.
That separation can help keep work and personal sessions distinct, but it is not a substitute for checking which account is active in each profile or whether your work’s policies allow the setup you have in mind.

Confirm that the extensions you need work on both devices
Safari supports extensions on iPhone and Mac, including content blockers and tools that add features from other apps. An extension’s availability on both devices depends on whether its developer supports both platforms and whether your account and settings meet its requirements. Look for the specific extension on each device before you commit to a browser workflow.
Extensions may be able to access webpage content, so review their permissions and enable only ones you recognize. Apple says Mac App Store extensions are reviewed, signed, hosted by Apple and automatically updated when automatic updates are selected; that review is not a guarantee that every extension is appropriate for your privacy needs. See Apple’s guidance on Safari extensions and Apple’s App Extension overview.

Compare privacy controls, not broad labels
Look at the controls you will actually use. Apple’s iPhone Safari guidance says Prevent Cross-Site Tracking limits third-party cookies and data by default. Safari also turns off extensions that can access browsing data in Private Browsing unless you enable them there. If an extension is essential, decide whether it should have access in the sites and browsing modes where you use it. Apple explains these controls in its Safari privacy and security guidance for iPhone.

Know what regional browser-engine rules do—and do not—mean
Apple documents regional exceptions for alternative browser engines on iPhone, but they are limited by eligibility, location and software version. In the EU, Apple says alternative engines are available to eligible apps distributed solely in the EU, subject to the Web Browser Engine Entitlement and ongoing security and privacy requirements. In Japan, Apple says eligible browser apps can use alternative engines starting with iOS 26.2. See Apple’s EU alternative browser engine policy and Japan alternative browser engine policy.
These policies do not show that a particular third-party browser currently uses an alternative engine, or that the option is available to every iPhone user. If engine choice matters to you, confirm your country, iOS version and the specific app’s current eligibility and implementation.
Quick Recap
Use this decision checklist
- Choose your sync account. Pick Apple Account continuity for Safari or Google Account Chrome Sync if that is where you already keep your browser data.
- Check your iPhone default. Open Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App and confirm your preferred installed browser is selectable.
- Test your work/personal setup. If you use Safari profiles, make sure the profile separation and sign-in behavior suit your workflow on the devices you use.
- Verify extensions individually. Confirm the exact extensions are available on iPhone and Mac, and review what webpage access they request.
- Inspect privacy settings. Decide which tracking protections, private-browsing behavior and extension permissions matter to you.
- Check regional requirements if engine choice matters. Treat EU and Japan policy exceptions as eligibility-dependent, not as a general iPhone feature.
