How to Choose a Beginner Recurve Bow for Target Archery

Take a beginner course before buying. Then choose a manageable takedown recurve, confirm its fit and limb compatibility, and have arrows matched to your measured draw and bow weight.

Take a beginner archery course before buying a recurve bow. After you have learned basic form, a coach can help measure your draw, choose a manageable limb weight, and match arrows to your setup. For many new target archers, a takedown recurve is a practical first bow because its limbs can be changed as skill and strength develop.

Start with instruction, then choose your bow

World Archery advises buying a first bow a short while after completing a beginners course. That timing matters: a coach can assess your draw length and whether you can draw, anchor, and repeat shots with sound form. Choose a setup you can control throughout a practice session, not the heaviest bow you can pull once.

Whenever possible, try risers in person. Check that the grip lets your hand sit comfortably, the bow feels straight and well balanced, and you can hold it steadily. A higher price does not guarantee better scores; World Archery notes that a new bow takes time to get used to and should not be expected to raise scores suddenly. World Archery’s first-bow guide covers the basic selection considerations.

Choose a bow length that suits your draw

As a rough starting point, World Archery’s 2017 guide suggests an overall recurve height in inches of about your draw length in inches plus 40. It cites 66–72 inches as a common range for standard setups, with more variation for youth. These are rules of thumb, not a fit guarantee; ask a coach or qualified shop to check your measured draw and bow setup.

Select manageable limbs and a setup you can upgrade

World Archery recommends beginning with a limb weight similar to, or slightly heavier than, what you used during prior shooting. Its guide says many adults use 18–32 pounds, but that broad adult range is not a beginner prescription. Limb ratings and the weight you feel can vary with draw length and setup. Easton’s 2021 target guide says actual peak recurve weight should be measured at the archer’s draw length, so do not choose limbs from body size, strength estimates, or a generic chart alone.

A takedown recurve lets you replace limbs without replacing the entire bow. If you expect to progress, keep early limbs economical and consider investing more attention in a comfortable riser that can remain in a later setup. Ask a shop whether it rents beginner limbs. Before buying, check limb-to-riser compatibility: World Archery says most limbs it describes use the cross-brand ILF fitting system, but screw-in and Hoyt Formula fittings are among the exceptions.

Compare complete setups, not just risers

Use these factors when comparing a beginner takedown recurve bow or kit:

  • Fit and handling: grip comfort, hand placement, balance, and whether you can hold the assembled bow steadily.
  • Draw and bow length: your measured draw and the coach’s recommendation, rather than an estimate based on height alone.
  • Progression: takedown construction, limb availability, fitting standard, and the cost or availability of rental and replacement limbs.
  • Complete setup cost: riser and limbs, string, rest, and any sight or stabilisation appropriate to your target-archery style, plus a tab, arm guard, quiver, and correctly matched arrows.
  • Local support: access to someone who can set up the bow, measure actual draw weight, and help fit arrows.

Do not assume a kit’s included arrows will suit you. Arrow fit depends on the bow’s actual weight at your draw length and the arrow’s length.

Have arrows fitted to the bow and archer

Arrow shaft spine must match both the bow’s actual weight at your draw length and the arrow length. Check the bow or arrow manufacturer’s tuning charts, and have a qualified shop or coach help interpret them if you are new to archery. An inexpensive packaged arrow can still be the wrong spine or length.

Easton’s 2021 target guide describes measuring arrow length by drawing an extra-long arrow to full draw and marking it one inch forward of the most forward part of the rest. That is Easton’s method, not a universal standard. If you have not been trained to draw and measure safely, leave the fitting to a local archery pro shop; Easton identifies a pro shop as the best place to determine actual recurve draw weight. See the Easton 2021 Target Product Guide.

A finger tab protects your fingers from string pressure, and an arm guard helps protect your arm from string impact. The All Japan Archery Federation also lists finger protection, arm guards, chest guards, and quivers among archery equipment. Follow your instructor and range’s requirements; protective gear does not replace safety instruction or a supervised range.
