Choose an encasement that has been tested for bed bugs, closes completely with a dependable zipper, resists tearing for at least the recommended holding period, and matches your mattress dimensions and depth. A well-fitted cover traps insects already inside the mattress, removes many hiding crevices and makes inspection easier. It does not, by itself, clear bugs from a bedroom or home, so use it as one measure in an integrated pest-management plan.
What a bed bug encasement does
A bed bug encasement is a zippered cover that surrounds every surface of a mattress. A suitable cover can also be made for a box spring. Unlike a loose mattress protector, an encasement is intended to leave no usable opening once zipped.

EPA guidance explains that encasements can trap bed bugs inside a mattress or box spring, reduce the number of crevices available for hiding and make it harder for insects to reach a sleeping person. In an archived EPA webinar Q&A, M. Merchant described the mechanism this way: “Encasements trap bed bugs inside, and provide fewer crevices for them to infest than a typical mattress or box spring.” J. White, another speaker in that historical Q&A, said, “We are big fans of encasements. They save time and money on treatments.” Those are archived expert comments, not a promise of a particular success rate.

The four buying requirements that matter most
| Requirement | What to verify before buying | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Complete closure | The zipper closes from end to end and the listing shows how the zipper termination is enclosed or secured. | Any open section can let insects escape or enter, defeating the enclosing function. |
| Durable construction | Fabric, zipper tape and seams are described as tear-resistant or sturdy, with clear care instructions and credible warranty information. | The cover must remain intact while it is doing its job; a small tear creates a route around the barrier. |
| Bed-bug-specific evidence | The manufacturer says the product was tested for bed bugs and can explain what was tested. | General allergy, dust-mite or waterproof claims do not establish performance against bed bugs. EPA advises buying a product tested for bed bugs. |
| Correct fit | Your mattress length, width and depth match the product’s stated dimensions, including any pillow-top or unusually tall profile. | A cover that cannot close fully, bunches around the corners or leaves slack at the zipper cannot reliably enclose the mattress. |
EPA’s consumer material does not identify one universal certification mark for bed bug encasements. Treat a vague “tested” badge as a prompt to ask questions, not as proof of an industry-wide standard.
Inspect the zipper and seams before trusting the cover
Closure must be continuous
Run the zipper all the way around the mattress before putting bedding on it. The slider should travel without separating the teeth. The zipper end should be covered, secured or otherwise designed so that a gap is not left where the track ends. Do not assume a zipper that feels smooth is automatically insect-tight; examine the actual end construction and the manufacturer’s instructions.
If the zipper catches, opens behind the slider or cannot reach its designed endpoint, stop using the cover until the problem is corrected. Forcing it can damage the teeth or the seam. A replacement is safer than taping over an opening, because tape can lift during laundering or movement and is not an established bed bug barrier.

Fabric and stitching need to survive handling
Mattresses are heavy and covers are stressed when corners are lifted, sheets are changed and the bed is moved. Look for a tightly joined fabric and reinforced seams rather than relying on a material name alone. No material in the supplied EPA guidance is declared universally superior, and no comparative laboratory result establishes that one fabric type always outperforms another.

- Bed Bug Mattress Encasement Sealed on All Six Sides: The nylon zipper closure glides around three sides and tucks under a stitched guard flap, leaving no open corner or gap at the pull; sleep tight knowing nothing crawls in and nothing crawls out
- Jersey Knit Mattress Encasement, Soft and Quiet: The knitted polyester face feels more like a soft T-shirt than plastic, silky smooth and silent as you turn over; the breathable jersey fabric handles a warm wash and low tumble dry and keeps its shape
- Waterproof Mattress Cover for Spills and Night Accidents: A waterproof layer sealed beneath the knit helps keep sweat, spills, and wet nights off your mattress; ideal for kids still learning, and when a mess happens it unzips and washes like a sheet
- Dust Mite Mattress Cover and Allergen Barrier: The tight knit and sealed zipper keep dust mite allergens shut inside the mattress instead of drifting into bedding; and rest easier knowing the fabric on your skin is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified
- Size and Depth: This Queen mattress encasement fits a mattress measuring 60 by 80 inches and 12 inches deep, stretching up to 13; measure yours first, then slip this zippered waterproof bed bug proof cover down like a pillowcase, and zip it closed
A warranty can indicate that the maker expects the construction to last, but it is not efficacy testing. Read the care label: high heat, bleach, or an incompatible washing method can weaken coatings, seams or zipper components. Keep the original instructions and proof of purchase in case the zipper or seam fails.
Choose visibility that supports inspection
A light-colored cover makes spotting marks, holes and contamination easier. EPA advises checking the cover regularly for holes. Inspect the entire surface, especially corners, zipper ends, handles and places that rub against a bed frame. Use a bright light and run your fingers over seams without stretching the fabric aggressively.
Match the cover to the mattress, not just the bed size
“Queen” or “king” is only the starting point. Before ordering, measure the mattress’s length, width and greatest depth, including a pillow-top, foam topper that will remain in place or a built-in euro-top. Compare those measurements with the retailer’s internal dimensions and maximum depth, not merely the label on the package.
Measure in a consistent way
- Remove sheets, pads and any topper that will not stay on the bed.
- Measure length from head to foot and width from side to side. Record the largest measurement if the edges are rounded.
- Measure depth from the bottom surface to the highest sleeping surface. Do not compress the mattress while measuring.
- Note unusual features such as pillow-tops, handles, exposed zippers or a mattress that is already inside another cover.
- Compare all three measurements with the encasement’s stated range. If the listing gives only a nominal bed size and no depth, ask the seller before purchasing.
Fit is practical buying advice inferred from the cover’s enclosing function; EPA’s cited guidance does not prescribe a particular measuring formula. A cover that is slightly loose may still close, but excess folds create abrasion points and make inspection harder. One that is too shallow can leave the zipper under strain or fail to close.

Do not forget the box spring
A box spring has its own seams, underside and cavities. EPA treatment-preparation guidance refers to encasements or liners for both mattress and box spring. If your bed uses one, measure it separately and buy a compatible cover rather than trying to force the mattress cover over both pieces. A platform bed without a box spring does not need a box-spring encasement, but its slats, joints and frame still require inspection.
How to evaluate a product listing
Use the listing as a set of claims to verify, not as a substitute for examining the item. The following questions expose the most common gaps:
- Does it explicitly mention bed bugs? “Waterproof,” “dust-mite proof” or “allergen barrier” alone is insufficient. Look for a bed-bug-specific test statement.
- What exactly was tested? Ask whether the complete assembled cover, including zipper and seams, was evaluated, and under what conditions. The available EPA pages recommend a tested product but do not define a universal test protocol.
- Is the zipper shown at both ends? Product photos should let you inspect the zipper termination and seam. If the end is hidden, request a close-up or written explanation.
- Are dimensions complete? Confirm internal length, width and depth, plus any tolerance or maximum profile.
- How is it cleaned? Follow the stated washing and drying method. A cover that requires a process you cannot perform safely is a poor choice.
- Can you inspect it after installation? Light fabric, accessible seams and a zipper that remains visible make routine checks practical.
Do not treat a high price, a long warranty or a large number of reviews as a substitute for these specifications. They may help with a purchase decision, but none establishes that the cover is bed-bug-proof.

- Prepare the room. Keep the mattress supported and avoid dragging it across rough flooring or sharp bed hardware. Remove loose bedding and launder it according to your pest-management plan.
- Inspect the empty cover. Before inserting the mattress, check the fabric, seams and zipper for manufacturing damage. Do not install a cover that already has a hole.
- Orient the cover. Identify the head and foot if the design is directional. Open the zipper fully so the mattress does not snag the slider.
- Insert without forcing corners. Work one corner at a time. If the mattress is thicker than the stated depth, stop and obtain a larger size rather than stretching the zipper.
- Close the zipper completely. Use the full travel of the zipper and secure the terminal end as instructed. Look around the entire perimeter for an opening.
- Recheck the underside. Lift each edge enough to verify that fabric is not caught in the teeth and that the cover has not pulled away from a corner.
- Cover the box spring separately. If present, repeat the same inspection and complete-closure checks on its encasement.
- Replace the mattress on the frame carefully. Avoid puncturing the cover on protruding screws, staples or splintered slats. Correct those hazards before final placement.
Do not cut, pin, sew through or tape the cover to make it fit. Any modification creates an untested opening and can invalidate the manufacturer’s care guidance.

How long to keep an encasement in place
EPA recommends leaving a bed bug encasement on for one year and selecting one sturdy enough to last that long. Bed bugs typically feed on blood every 5 to 10 days, and EPA says they can survive several months to a year without feeding (the agency page was last updated July 6, 2026). Removing the cover early can release insects that are still alive inside.
During that holding period, keep the zipper closed and perform regular visual checks. If you find a hole, isolate the mattress and follow the replacement or repair instructions from the manufacturer; do not simply turn the damaged area toward the wall. Record inspection dates so a missed check does not become an unnoticed failure.

An encasement contains the mattress; it does not sterilize the room. Bed bugs elsewhere can reach a sleeper, hide in furniture or move back onto bedding. The archived EPA expert Q&A warns that insects living elsewhere can quickly reinfest replacement bedding. Therefore, a newly covered mattress is not evidence that the infestation has ended.

In practice, that means combining inspection, cleaning and laundering actions, targeted treatment appropriate to the site, monitoring and follow-up. Bed-leg interceptors are a related monitoring tool: they can help reveal whether insects are traveling between the floor and the bed, but they are not a replacement for an encasement or for treatment of other harborages.

Inspect the rest of the sleeping area
- Examine bed-frame joints, screw holes, headboards and the wall behind the bed.
- Check seams and undersides of nearby upholstered furniture.
- Reduce clutter that creates additional hiding places, while avoiding abrupt moves that spread insects to other rooms.
- Use monitoring devices according to their instructions and document what you find.
If signs continue outside the encased mattress, treat the situation as a broader infestation rather than buying a second mattress cover and assuming the problem is contained.
Common failure modes and the right response
The zipper will not close
Confirm that the mattress depth is within the stated range and that fabric is not caught in the teeth. Do not force the slider. If the dimensions are correct and the zipper still separates, contact the seller or manufacturer for a documented replacement.
A seam or corner tears
Stop relying on the cover as a barrier. Photograph the damage, retain the purchase information and follow the warranty or replacement process. Inspect the bed frame for the sharp point that caused the tear and remove it before installing a new cover.
You see a bug on the outside
Do not open the encasement to investigate. Capture or photograph the insect without crushing it if possible, inspect nearby harborages and continue the wider IPM response. A bug on the exterior may have arrived from another location and does not prove that the cover leaked.
The listing claims “bed-bug proof” but gives no test details
Ask what was tested and whether the zipper and seams were included. If the seller cannot answer, choose a product with a clear bed-bug-specific test claim instead of treating marketing language as certification.
The cover becomes damaged during laundering
Follow the care label exactly. If the fabric, coating or zipper has changed, consider the barrier compromised and replace it according to the maker’s instructions. Never reinstall a cover with an unverified opening.
A practical purchase checklist
- Bed-bug-specific testing is stated, with enough detail to ask follow-up questions.
- The zipper closes completely and its terminal end is enclosed or secured.
- Fabric, zipper and seams are described as sturdy and tear-resistant.
- Length, width and maximum depth match your measured mattress.
- Pillow-top or other unusual profiles are included in the fit check.
- The color and construction allow you to inspect for holes.
- Care, washing and drying instructions fit your household.
- A separate box-spring cover is included in your plan when a box spring is present.
- You can keep the cover undisturbed for the full EPA-recommended holding period.
- You have a plan for monitoring and treating bed-frame and room locations beyond the mattress.
When to involve a pest-management professional
Seek professional help when insects or evidence appear away from the bed, when monitoring continues to show activity after the mattress is enclosed, or when repeated treatment attempts fail. A professional can inspect harborages that an encasement cannot address and build a coordinated IPM plan. Keep the encasement closed while the inspection and treatment are arranged, and tell the professional its installation date and any damage you have observed.
