Choose only a battery chemistry, voltage, size, connector and temperature range approved for your exact logger model. Then estimate service life from the logger’s real workload—measurement and sensor power, cellular transmission frequency, signal quality and site temperature—not from the battery’s capacity label alone.
Start with the logger’s exact battery requirements
Find the manual for the precise logger model and revision. Confirm its approved chemistry and voltage, required cell or pack, dimensions, polarity, connector and operating-temperature limits. A battery described simply as “lithium” is not necessarily interchangeable with another lithium battery: chemistries differ, as do voltage, pulse-current capability and charging requirements.

Manufacturer examples show why model-specific checking matters. Honeywell specifies two D-cell lithium battery packs for the CNI4 and lists a 5–8 year life for that logger configuration (Honeywell CNI4 product specifications). Consibio identifies a 46 Wh LSH-20 Li-SOCl2 pack for its WD-68 (Consibio WD-68 support documentation). T&D names LS14250 cells for specific RTR500B units (T&D RTR500B online help). These parts are not general-purpose substitutions for other loggers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore buying, check the manual’s part number and whether the battery must be supplied as a matched pack. If the manual does not establish that a proposed cell or pack is compatible, ask the logger maker rather than choosing by appearance or nominal capacity.

Estimate the workload before estimating runtime
A logger’s battery supports more than the act of recording. Its consumption depends on how often it measures, whether it powers sensors, how often it connects to cellular service, and how much work communication requires. Alarms, retries and buffering behavior can also change the load. Write down the deployment’s expected settings and ask the manufacturer for a runtime estimate for that configuration.
Measurement and sensor load
Frequent measurements can increase consumption, especially when the logger supplies power to attached sensors. The number and type of sensors matter, so a runtime estimate for a logger used without the same sensor load may not apply.
Cellular connection schedule and signal quality
Transmitting can draw much more power than sleep or measurement. For the WD-68, Consibio lists typical power of 0.2 mW in deep sleep, 150–500 mW during measurement and 1600 mW during transmission. These are figures for that logger, not a universal power profile. Consibio also notes that poor connection quality can materially change transmission power and duration.

- 3600mWh High Capacity with Constant 1.5V Output - Unlike NiMH batteries that drop to 1.2V, these lithium AA batteries maintain steady 1.5V power until fully depleted. Ideal for high-drain devices: Blink cameras, Xbox controllers, portable fans, trail cameras, and wireless mice. Equivalent to 2400mAh capacity of premium disposable batteries.
- 3-Hour Fast Charging with Smart LED Display - Type-C charger (5V/3A) fully charges all 8 batteries in just 3 hours. Individual LED indicators for each battery: Flashing Green = Charging, Solid Green = Fully Charged, Flashing Red = Error. No more guessing which batteries are ready to use.
- 2-in-1 Charger & Organizer with Magnetic Closure - Sleek charging case stores and charges batteries simultaneously, eliminating clutter and lost batteries. Compact design perfect for home, travel, camping, or workshop. Keep your rechargeable AA batteries organized and always ready.
- Low Self-Discharge & Advanced Safety Protection - Retains 80% charge after months of storage, perfect for emergency flashlights and backup devices. Built-in smart chip protects against overcharging, overheating, over-discharge, and short circuits. Safe for you and your electronics.
- Extreme Temperature Performance (-40°F to 140°F) - Reliable operation in harsh conditions where alkaline batteries fail. Perfect for outdoor trail cameras in freezing winters, security cameras, heated attics, or any device exposed to temperature extremes. Year-round dependability.
A weak-signal location may therefore use more energy than a well-covered site with the same logging schedule. Include the expected cellular coverage, connection interval and likely retries when requesting a runtime estimate.
Read published battery-life figures with their assumptions
Battery-life claims are useful only when the device, settings and conditions are clear. The examples below are specific manufacturer estimates, not a direct comparison: their sensor loads, connection schedules, temperatures and end-of-life definitions do not necessarily match.
| Logger and source | Published estimate | Conditions or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Honeywell CNI4 (product specifications) | 5–8 years | For two D-cell lithium battery packs in the CNI4 product context; the specification listing references a datasheet dated June 8, 2022. |
| Consibio WD-68 (support documentation) | More than 5 years with the non-rechargeable Li-SOCl2 option | Estimate for infrequent use, such as one measurement and transmission per day; Consibio qualifies runtime by connection quality. |
| DataCell logger (instruction manual, p. 17) | Typically 5 years at one call per day and 15-minute logging | For the specified 3.6 V, 14 Ah primary lithium cell; the manual says service life depends on configuration. |
| T&D RTR500B (online help) | About 10 months in its stated baseline | Footnote assumes recording intervals of at least 10 seconds, current readings transmitted every 10 minutes and recorded data transmitted once daily. |
| Onset RX2105 (specification) | Three months with one-minute logging and daily connections; two months with one-minute logging and hourly connections | Backup-battery estimates with approximately 10 motes; Onset warns weak cellular strength could reduce life. |
Do not use one logger’s years-of-life estimate to predict another logger’s service interval. Ask for an estimate based on your own measurement interval, sensor configuration, transmission schedule, coverage and temperature.

Account for site temperature and storage
Check both the logger’s operating limits and the battery maker’s temperature and storage guidance. Temperature can reduce available battery life, while cold can also affect communication independently of whether the battery still has usable power.

T&D also cautions that communication may become unstable at low temperatures even when battery power is sufficient. These are model- and configuration-specific figures, not a general lithium-battery derating rule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose primary or rechargeable based on servicing
A primary battery avoids a planned recharge cycle but eventually needs replacement. A rechargeable pack can suit a site where staff can charge packs and make scheduled swaps. Consibio describes rechargeable Li-ion packs for the WD-68 that can be swapped and recharged, and a non-rechargeable LSH-20 backup option for infrequent operation. Confirm that the logger approves the exact pack and that the necessary charging hardware is specified before choosing either approach.

Compare the options that the logger maker approves across the costs and logistics that matter at your site:
- Usable capacity under the logger’s peak or pulse-current demand.
- Expected runtime at the site’s temperature and cellular coverage.
- Self-discharge and shelf life for stored spares.
- Recharge access, cycle and swap logistics, or primary-cell replacement needs.
- Connector compatibility and field replacement time.
- Travel, spare packs, downtime, disposal and total maintenance cost.
Plan replacement and battery changes
Build a conservative service schedule for cold, weak-signal or high-transmission deployments. Use the logger’s battery gauge or alerts if available, but check the manual to understand how the device estimates charge and whether an alert takes time to clear after installation of a new battery.
When replacing a battery, follow the exact model’s maintenance instructions. T&D’s cited maintenance path directs users to inspect the gasket and, for the specified model and CR2 procedure, replace packing and desiccant as directed. Follow the logger’s own instructions for seals, desiccant and torque; enclosure integrity can be affected by an incorrect battery change.
