PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchChoose the POS system first, then buy a scanner from that system’s current compatibility list. The right setup depends on how you take payments, sell in-store or online, manage stock, and operate across locations—not just whether a scanner plugs in by USB or pairs over Bluetooth.
Start with the store’s workflow, not the hardware
List the tasks the system must support before comparing devices. A pop-up seller may need a supported phone or tablet and card reader; a permanent counter may also need a receipt printer; a store with multiple locations or a warehouse may need a scanner and cash drawer. These are examples, not fixed bundles. Shopify’s hardware guide describes setup options, but the actual requirements depend on your store.

- Where you sell: fixed checkout counter, mobile checkout, online and in-store, or multiple locations.
- How you take payment: identify the payment methods you accept and the compatible reader or terminal required for them.
- How you manage products: check that the POS can maintain the product records, prices, and stock information your catalog needs.
- What staff do with inventory: include receiving deliveries, stock counts, and locating variants such as different sizes or colors.
- What else must connect: consider a receipt printer, cash drawer, scale, label printer, or adapter only if your workflow needs it.
Compare shortlisted systems on the complete setup: software, hardware, payment processing, and any required support or integrations. Ask vendors for current terms and quotes; prices and availability vary, and the available evidence does not establish one POS as best for every store.
Choose a POS, then verify the exact scanner setup
Scanner compatibility can depend on the POS app, scanner model, host device, operating system, and adapter. Before purchasing, check the POS vendor’s current list for the exact scanner and device combination, supported barcode formats, connection method, and any operating-system or accessory requirements. A connection label such as “USB” or “Bluetooth” is not enough to establish compatibility.

Square: check the device-specific rules
Square documents USB scanner support on Square Stand, Square Register, and selected Android devices. For USB scanning on Android, Square requires Android 9.0 and USB OTG or host mode; an adapter may be needed. Square’s documentation says Bluetooth scanners are currently compatible only with iPads and iPhones, and advises checking the exact model. These are Square-specific requirements, not general rules for all POS systems. See Square’s scanner compatibility guidance.
Shopify: verify both scanner and POS device requirements
Shopify maintains separate guidance for supported barcode scanners and supported devices. Its requirements page states that Shopify POS will require Android 13 or higher and iOS 18 or higher starting in January 2027; devices must be updated by June 6, 2027 to continue using the app. Recheck the current requirements and scanner list when buying, especially if you plan to keep the device for several years.

Try the phone or tablet camera first if it fits the job
A dedicated scanner is useful for checkout, receiving purchase orders, and inventory counts, but it may not be necessary for a low-volume starting setup. Square documents scanning barcodes with a compatible Android device’s built-in camera without additional hardware. Shopify’s hardware guide also describes smartphone-camera scanning for checkout or inventory counts. Confirm the feature is available in your chosen POS app and on your device before relying on it.

Match barcode capability to what the store needs
For routine product identification, a compatible scanner and POS may be all that is needed. If you expect to use GS1 2D barcodes to carry additional data such as expiry dates, batch information, or weight, treat reading the symbol and using its data as separate requirements. The scanner must decode the barcode, while the POS and back-office systems must be able to parse, store, and act on the relevant information.

GS1’s December 2025 2D Barcodes at Retail Point-of-Sale Implementation Guideline describes the POS host as supporting transaction processing, inventory and product data, integrations with peripherals, payments, and reporting. It notes that advanced 2D use cases may require POS software updates or configuration. GS1’s May 2026 implementation playbook recommends imager-based scanners capable of decoding GS1 2D barcodes, validating compatibility across the terminal and peripherals, and documenting the data flow end to end.
Plan for the business rule as well as the scan
Reading an expiry date does not automatically stop a sale or trigger a markdown. For workflows such as expiry-based stop-sale or date-based discounts, confirm that the POS rules and backend support the action. Test both existing linear barcodes and 2D symbols through the full scanner-to-POS-to-backend path before depending on the workflow. GS1’s guidance is about readiness; it does not mean every small store needs 2D support now.
