Choose a backup internet connection by starting with what your business cannot afford to lose and how long it can be offline. Then confirm services at the exact address, whether the backup avoids the primary connection’s likely failure points, whether it can support essential workloads, and what equipment automatic failover requires.
How do I choose a backup internet connection for my business?
Begin by listing the business functions that must keep working during an outage: payment processing, voice or video calls, cloud applications, remote access, security systems, or customer-facing services. For each, decide what level of interruption is acceptable and what minimum upload and download performance it needs. A backup sized only for basic email may not carry calls, large file transfers, or several users at once.

Use those requirements to compare options at your premises. The right choice is not determined by whether a service is called fiber, cable, LTE, 5G, satellite, or fixed wireless; it depends on whether that service is available where you operate, performs adequately for the essential workload, and remains usable when the primary connection fails.

Search the exact business location on the FCC National Broadband Map. Its fixed-service view covers provider-reported fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, and fixed wireless offerings at homes and small-business locations, and can show reported maximum advertised download and upload speeds. These are reported options, not a guarantee that an order can be installed or that the advertised maximum will match your experience.

Check mobile coverage separately. The FCC map displays provider-reported 3G, 4G, and 5G coverage for outdoor or in-vehicle use; it does not establish reception inside your building. The FCC explains that mobile coverage areas are modeled, and actual results can vary with the device, terrain, and cell-site capacity. Provider maps may also rely on different assumptions. See the FCC’s mobile map guidance and map data explanation.
FCC availability data is based on provider submissions, with fixed offerings reported location by location; the information is updated and can be challenged publicly. Treat the map as a shortlist, then ask providers to confirm serviceability, installation requirements, plan details, and any limitations at your address.

Can I use 5G or LTE as backup internet?
Yes, if a suitable carrier plan and compatible equipment are available and cellular reception at the router’s intended location is adequate. LTE or 5G can provide a path separate from a wired primary connection, but cellular coverage on a map does not confirm indoor signal or available network capacity. Test reception and throughput where the modem or router will actually sit, preferably at times when the business needs the backup.

| Decision factor | Second fixed connection | LTE/5G connection |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Confirm the provider can serve the exact premises and install the service. | Check carrier-reported coverage, then validate indoor reception at the equipment location. |
| Failure-path diversity | Ask whether the second service shares a provider, physical route, or other local failure point with the primary. | May avoid a wired route, but assess whether local power, site, or other shared dependencies could still affect it. |
| Capacity and workload fit | Confirm actual plan performance and whether it meets essential upload and download needs. | Check both indoor signal and usable network capacity for the applications and number of users that must remain online. |
| Automatic switching | Verify that the router or firewall supports the connection type and can detect the primary failure. | Verify cellular modem, carrier, plan, and router compatibility, plus how failover and return to the primary work. |
| Total cost | Compare recurring service charges and any installation or equipment costs. | Compare recurring plan charges, modem/router costs, and any data or usage terms that apply. |
Satellite or fixed wireless may also be candidates where available and appropriate for the workload. Do not assume availability, speed, or resilience from the technology name alone, and compare current provider quotes rather than relying on a general price or ranking.
What do I need for automatic internet failover?
Automatic failover requires both a backup connection and network equipment able to monitor the primary path and switch traffic when it fails. A dual-WAN router or cellular failover router is one equipment category to consider; before choosing a model, confirm carrier and modem support, WAN-port requirements, throughput capacity, plan compatibility, and the behavior it supports for failover and failback.

An FCC order adopted September 7, 2022, describes the NFL’s reported stadium arrangement: a Lumen hardwired connection, Verizon LTE backup, and Cisco Meraki switching for automatic rollover. The order recounts one Atlanta incident on November 18, 2021, when a fiber cut took down Lumen service and Verizon LTE switched in without loss of communication with the stadium access system (SAS). This is a documented example of one configuration and event, not a typical small-business design or evidence of a universal reliability rate. Read the FCC’s DA 22-927 order.

- Confirm service and terms: Get address-specific confirmation from the provider, including installation needs, plan limits, and equipment requirements.
- Check the actual installation point: For cellular service, test reception and usable performance where the router or modem will be placed, not only outdoors or at another part of the building.
- Verify the network design: Confirm that the router supports both connections and that the backup is sufficiently independent of the primary for the failures you are trying to withstand.
- Test switching safely: In a controlled window, confirm that essential applications work on backup, observe the interruption during switchover, and check how service returns to the primary connection.
- Document operations: Record provider and support contacts, account details, equipment configuration, and the steps staff should follow during an outage.
Include both recurring service and equipment costs in the decision. The cited FCC material does not establish general prices, uptime commitments, failover latency, or comparative performance across connection types; obtain current terms for your location and equipment.
