How to Choose a 4K Gaming Projector for Console and PC

A 4K label does not tell you the projector’s fastest resolution or input lag. Compare supported modes, room fit, connections and audio before buying.

Choose a 4K gaming projector by checking the resolution and refresh rate it supports together, the input lag in that exact mode, and whether its brightness, placement and connections suit your room and equipment. “4K” alone does not mean 4K at 120Hz: a projector may deliver 4K at 60Hz but require 1080p for faster refresh rates.

What should you look for in a 4K gaming projector?

Start with the video mode you actually want to play. Compare a projector’s supported resolution and refresh rate as a pair, then check its input lag for that same pair. Next, confirm that the image can work in your room and that the projector’s ports and installation options fit your setup.

  • Video modes: Does it support your target resolution at your target refresh rate?
  • Input lag: What latency does the manufacturer specify in that mode?
  • Room and image: Can the projector produce a usable image at your intended size and placement?
  • Connections: Can the projector, console or PC, and any receiver or switch pass the signal you want?
  • Audio: Can you connect to your receiver or soundbar using the features and ports on your specific equipment?

Can a projector do 4K at 120Hz?

Some compatible HDMI 2.1 projectors support 4K/120fps, but that capability is not universal. Other gaming-focused models offer 4K at 60Hz and faster refresh rates at lower resolutions. The BenQ TK700, for example, lists 4K/60Hz and 1080p/120Hz and 1080p/240Hz modes; its faster listed modes are not 4K modes.

Epson UK describes 4K resolution over HDMI 2.1 and 120fps for compatible models. That is guidance for compatible models, not a claim about Epson’s entire projector lineup. Confirm the exact projector’s current regional specifications, the port you plan to use, and the output modes of your console or PC. If a receiver or switch sits between the source and projector, check that it can pass the same signal too.

Compare input lag at the resolution and refresh rate you will use

Input-lag figures are meaningful only with their signal mode and source attached. The following are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent, controlled comparisons between products:

Projector Mode or specification Manufacturer-published input lag
BenQ TK700 4K/60Hz 16.7 ms
BenQ TK700 1080p/120Hz 8.3 ms
BenQ TK700 1080p/240Hz 4.2 ms
ViewSonic PX701-4K Mode not identified with the figure on the cited product page 4.2 ms

BenQ also lists 16.7 ms at 1080p/60Hz for the TK700. Epson notes that there is no official input-lag measurement standard and that results can vary with signal and settings. Avoid treating a low number as a promise that applies across every mode. There is no universal cutoff for “good” lag established by these product pages; consider the types of games you play and compare claims for your chosen mode.

Check brightness, image size and room conditions

Ambient light, image size, contrast and projector placement all affect how the picture works in your room. A manufacturer’s lumen rating is not a guarantee of image quality in every environment. Consider how much light you can control, where the projector can sit, and the screen size you want. BenQ and ViewSonic provide buying guidance on brightness, image quality, screen size and setup; use it as a starting point alongside the specifications for the exact model.

Verify the ports and plan placement and audio

Trace the video signal

Check the projector’s actual input ports and their capabilities—not just the model’s headline resolution. For example, ViewSonic lists HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 1.4/2.2 for the PX701-4K. That specification is not interchangeable with HDMI 2.1 guidance for compatible Epson models. Confirm the precise unit’s regional specification sheet and every device in the signal path.

Work out throw distance and screen size

Before buying, check whether the projector can be placed at the distance needed for your desired image size. Use the manufacturer’s installation guidance for the specific model and your room; a projector’s advertised image size does not by itself establish that it will fit your available space.

Confirm the audio route

If you use an external receiver or soundbar, check the connection path and whether the specific equipment supports the ARC or eARC feature you need. BenQ’s buying guide recommends considering ARC and external sound, but the relevant ports and capabilities depend on the equipment in your setup.

Use model examples as evidence, not blanket recommendations

  • BenQ TK700: BenQ labels it a 4K HDR console gaming projector. Its published figures illustrate the difference between 4K/60Hz and faster 1080p modes; they do not establish that it is the right choice for every room or player.
  • ViewSonic PX701-4K: ViewSonic lists 4K UHD, HDR/HLG, 4.2 ms input lag, 240Hz, and HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 1.4/2.2. Check the current regional specification to confirm which resolutions are supported at each refresh rate; the product-page lag figure should not be assumed to apply to every mode.
  • Epson compatible models: Epson UK describes 4K over HDMI 2.1 and 120fps for compatible models, and cautions that lag measurements vary by signal and settings. Confirm model-specific capabilities rather than generalizing them to the whole lineup.

A practical decision order

  1. Choose your priority: Decide whether you value 4K detail at 60Hz or higher frame rates, potentially at a lower resolution.
  2. Confirm the mode: Find that exact resolution and refresh-rate combination in the projector’s current specification.
  3. Check mode-specific lag: Compare manufacturer figures only when the signal mode is identified; look for independent testing if you need a controlled comparison.
  4. Check the room fit: Match brightness guidance, intended image size and throw distance to your room and placement options.
  5. Check the entire setup: Verify the source device, projector input and any receiver or switch can pass the signal; confirm the external-audio path if needed.

Specifications can vary by region and model version. The cited manufacturer pages are useful starting points, but the current documentation for the exact unit you intend to buy is the decisive check.
