Choose a 3D scanner for the result you need: an inspection measurement, a printable mesh, or editable CAD. Those are different jobs, and no single accuracy figure tells you whether a scanner will capture your part reliably or fit your workflow.

Start with the result you need

Before comparing scanners, define what you need to have at the end. A scan may be useful for several purposes, but each has different requirements for measurement confidence, surface detail, processing, and software.

  • Dimensional inspection: Compare a measured part with a nominal design or tolerance and produce an inspection result or report. The scanner, measurement setup, and validation must suit the tolerances and consequences of the decision.
  • 3D printing: Capture the object as a mesh that can be cleaned up and prepared in a slicer. A printable mesh does not need to be an editable parametric CAD model.
  • Reverse engineering: Use scan data to reconstruct surfaces and create editable CAD. This requires processing beyond capture, plus software that can work with the mesh and connect to your CAD environment.

If you need both inspection and CAD reconstruction, evaluate both workflows rather than assuming that a scanner optimized for one will automatically deliver the other.

What are the practical differences between laser and structured-light 3D scanners?

“3D scanner” describes a range of capture approaches, not one interchangeable tool type. Two common optical methods are laser-line triangulation and structured light. Hexagon’s additive-manufacturing inspection guide describes laser triangulation as calculating 3D points from projected laser light and camera observations. In structured-light scanning, a projector casts a fringe pattern and cameras measure how the pattern deforms across the surface.

Approach How it captures shape Considerations in Hexagon’s guide
Laser-line triangulation A laser line is projected onto the object and observed by cameras to calculate 3D points. The guide describes it as capable on reflective or dark shiny objects. Treat that as a stated tendency, not a guarantee for every scanner, surface, or setup.
Structured light A projected fringe pattern is captured by cameras; its deformation is used to measure the surface. The guide describes it as producing dense point clouds with detail on sharp edges. Results still depend on the model, the part, and capture conditions.

Hexagon’s beginner guide also describes time-of-flight laser scanning and photogrammetry as other capture approaches. The label “3D scanner” alone therefore does not tell you how a device captures an object or whether it suits your application.

For any technology, check whether the scanner can see the surfaces you need. Line of sight, access to recesses, surface reflectivity or darkness, ambient light, object size, and whether targets or reference tracking are acceptable can all affect the practical setup.

  • Object scale and detail: Check the minimum and maximum object sizes, working distance, field of view, capture area, resolution, and the coverage you can expect over the part. A large working range is not, by itself, proof of fine detail across that range.
  • Tracking and setup: Determine how the scanner follows its position as you move around the object, whether targets or reference tracking are needed, and whether dynamic or target-free tracking is available for the particular model and workflow.
  • Surface and environment: Consider dark or reflective materials, ambient light, access, line of sight, and whether the part can be moved or prepared for scanning.
  • Performance evidence: Read how stated accuracy was measured, under what conditions, and over what distance. Look for repeatability evidence and assess fit against your actual tolerance. Do not treat separate “up to” figures as though they came from one test protocol.
  • Workflow and ownership: Account for registration and tracking, mesh cleanup, CAD reconstruction or inspection software, supported exports, computer requirements, software licensing, operator setup, and vendor support.

Specifications help you shortlist. For a high-consequence inspection or a demanding reverse-engineering job, ask the vendor to review a representative application or demonstrate the scanner against your parts and requirements before committing.

How should you interpret accuracy claims?

A manufacturer’s accuracy specification is a product claim, not an independent comparison or a guarantee for every part. A single number is difficult to interpret without its measurement context, including distance, setup, conditions, and the relevant model revision. Repeatability and the ability to capture the features that matter to your task are also important.

Compare evidence on a like-for-like basis. If one page says “up to” a value while another uses a different test context—or does not state one—you cannot conclude that the first scanner will be more accurate in your application. The figures below are manufacturer-stated specifications, not results from an independent head-to-head test.

What does a scanner produce, and what software comes next?

A scanner captures data; it does not necessarily produce a finished, editable design. Hexagon’s 2023 reverse-engineering guide describes a workflow of scanning, meshing, and importing the mesh into software that can reconstruct surfaces and CAD. It notes that a mesh may need refinement, such as filling gaps or changing triangle count, and that software choice matters for large datasets and connection to an existing CAD environment.

  1. Capture: Scan the part and collect the data needed for the features and surfaces in scope.
  2. Register and mesh: Align the captured data into a model. Inspect coverage and refine the mesh as needed, including addressing gaps or adjusting triangle count.
  3. Choose the next workflow: For printing, prepare a suitable mesh and export it to a compatible slicer. For inspection, use compatible inspection software to compare measurements with the design and report results. For reverse engineering, use software capable of reconstructing surfaces and CAD from scan data.
  4. Check compatibility: Confirm supported file formats, dataset handling, and integration with the CAD, slicer, or inspection tools you already use.

Hexagon describes Geomagic Design X as combining scan-data processing with history-based CAD to create editable parametric solid models. That is an example of why a scan-to-CAD requirement may call for dedicated software as well as a scanner; buying a scanner alone does not ensure an editable CAD result.

How do example scanner specifications illustrate the choice?

These examples show how manufacturers position products and report specifications. They are not recommendations based on comparative testing; verify the current model revision, conditions, and application fit with the vendor.

Example Manufacturer-stated information What it does—and does not—tell you
Revopoint INSPIRE Revopoint’s product page, accessed in 2026, lists accuracy “up to 0.2 mm” and scanning speed of 14–18 fps. It lists PLY, OBJ, STL, ASC, 3MF, GLTF, and FBX exports and markets the scanner for 3D printing. The listed formats and positioning are relevant to a mesh workflow. The figures are vendor claims, not independent validation or proof of suitability for metrology.
Revopoint MINI 2 Revopoint’s model-range brochure lists accuracy “up to 0.05 mm.” Compare its intended object scale, capture geometry, working distance, precision, and fused point distance in the brochure; the accuracy figure alone is not enough to select a scanner.
Revopoint POP 3 Plus The same Revopoint brochure lists accuracy “up to 0.08 mm.” The brochure compares model classes and capture characteristics, but remains manufacturer material rather than an independent test.
Revopoint RANGE 2 The same Revopoint brochure lists accuracy “up to 0.3 mm.” The model-range comparison illustrates why object size and capture geometry matter alongside a headline figure.
Artec Point II Artec lists this target-based handheld laser scanner for metrology and reverse engineering, with stated accuracy “up to 0.02 mm,” output formats, and certification information. Artec also specifies accuracy over distance. Review that context and confirm the applicable model revision and conditions instead of treating the single “up to” figure as a universal result.
Hexagon handheld scanner range Hexagon describes a range for industrial metrology and reverse engineering, including ATLASCAN Pro and HYPERSCAN, with stated accuracy and object-size ranges. It also describes target-free or dynamic tracking features for certain workflows. Confirm current model-level specifications and whether the tracking approach fits your setup; range-level descriptions do not replace reviewing the specification for the specific scanner.

How to shortlist and validate a scanner

  1. Write down the deliverable. Specify whether you need an inspection result, a mesh for printing, editable CAD, or more than one of these.
  2. Describe representative parts. Note their size, smallest important features, surfaces, access constraints, and the tolerances or detail that matter.
  3. Check capture fit. Compare scan volume, working distance, field of view, resolution, tracking requirements, and environmental constraints for the actual parts.
  4. Trace the full data path. Identify the software, cleanup, reconstruction, inspection or slicing steps, file formats, computer needs, and licensing required to reach the deliverable.
  5. Review evidence with the vendor. Ask how performance figures were obtained and whether a representative application review or demonstration can address your requirements.
  6. Validate before relying on results. Test the selected setup on representative parts against the tolerances and decisions that matter in your application.

Manufacturer specifications are useful for narrowing options, but the available evidence here does not establish an independent ranking or a universal method for comparing every vendor’s accuracy claims. Validate the scanner in the context of the work you intend to do.
