What makes a 360 camera useful for panoramic stills?
A dedicated 360 camera captures the full sphere around it in one shot. That is different from sweeping a phone or conventional camera across a scene and joining overlapping frames later. Because the image covers the full sphere, its resolution is spread across a much wider view than a standard photo. A larger megapixel number can be useful, but it does not translate directly into the same apparent detail in any one direction. For virtual tours, interiors, and immersive viewing, also consider seam visibility, exposure consistency, leveling, transfer time, and whether the destination platform accepts spherical images.

These features can make it easier to operate the camera and handle interiors with bright windows and darker areas. For low light and editing control: Ricoh THETA Z1
Ricoh positions the Z1’s 1-inch sensor for low-light use. It can save RAW (DNG) plus JPEG or JPEG alone, and Ricoh provides a free THETA Stitcher plug-in for Lightroom Classic. The documented route is to develop the RAW files and use the plug-in to create spherical images (Ricoh THETA Z1 features). This adds a desktop post-processing step, but gives an editing-oriented user a RAW workflow rather than relying only on a ready-to-share JPEG.
How to decide before you buy
- Start with the destination. Check that the website, virtual-tour service, or sharing app where you will publish supports spherical photos.
- Pick your capture environment. For dim rooms or mixed lighting, prioritize the Z1’s low-light positioning and RAW option; for property capture with touchscreen operation and HDR processing, consider the X.
- Account for editing and transfer. The X5 uses the Insta360 mobile app or Studio desktop software for export. The Z1’s RAW path uses Lightroom Classic and Ricoh’s stitching plug-in. Make sure the devices and software fit your routine.
- Check storage and power needs. For the X5, Insta360 specifies a UHS-I V30-or-higher microSD card. Verify current capacity and compatibility requirements; do not assume every card or accessory will work.
- Evaluate results on sample images from your intended scene. Look for seam placement, exposure transitions, and detail in the directions viewers are likely to inspect. Published resolution alone cannot answer those questions.
What the published specifications do—and do not—tell you
The listed resolutions help distinguish the cameras on paper, but they are not evidence from a controlled still-photo comparison. No cited source supplies a common test of seam quality, leveling, trigger speed, app transfer time, battery duration, or low-light image quality across all three models. Treat manufacturer descriptions as specifications and positioning, and the THETA X seam and battery comments as one guide’s review findings.
