How do I check my PS5 firmware version?
The version check takes place in the console-information screen, not in the update screen:

- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select System.
- Choose System Software.
- Open Console Information.
- Read the value listed for the system software version. Record every number, decimal point and suffix exactly as displayed.
This screen identifies the software currently installed on the console. You do not need to start a download or update to see it.

Where do I find my PS5 system software version?
The complete menu path is Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The version is shown on that page alongside the console information. If the console is running the latest generally available release, Sony displays “Up to date” beneath the version.

Read the version number first. Treat “Up to date” as a separate status indicator: it tells you that Sony considers the installed software current, while the number tells you which software release is actually installed. A console can therefore be identified precisely even when you are researching an older release for compatibility purposes.
Do not use the update screen just to check the version
Sony places update controls in a different submenu: Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Sony says “Update Available” appears there when a newer release can be installed.
For a version check, stop at Console Information. Opening the update-and-settings page can show that an update exists, but beginning the update changes the condition you are trying to document. If you are investigating homebrew, note the installed version before deciding whether any update is appropriate.
Sony recommends using its official update procedures. Its support guidance warns that update data from another source, or an altered update method, can affect console operation and may affect warranty or repair service. A version check is read-only; an update is a separate decision with potentially different consequences.
What beta testers should know
If the PS5 is enrolled in the system software beta, the beta version is also shown at Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Record the displayed value rather than assuming that a beta build has the same behavior as a similarly numbered public release.
When reporting the version to a homebrew project, mention that the console is on a beta build if that is shown or known. Compatibility documentation may distinguish public releases from beta software, and the exact build identifier is more useful than a general statement such as “my PS5 is updated.”

How to record the result accurately
Homebrew documentation often uses exact firmware values as decision points. A transcription error can send you to the wrong instructions, so make a durable record before leaving the screen.

- Copy the complete version string, including all punctuation and any suffix.
- Note whether Up to date appears beneath it.
- Note whether the console is enrolled in a beta program.
- Take a photograph or screenshot for your own reference if the displayed information is difficult to transcribe.
- When asking for help, include the exact value and the date you checked it; do not round it to a major or minor release.
Do not substitute the console model, serial information or an update-availability message for the system software version. Those are different pieces of information and do not answer the firmware question.
Why the firmware number matters for homebrew
A PS5 firmware number is an input to compatibility research, not a guarantee that a homebrew setup will work. Community setup documentation explains that homebrew availability depends on both the firmware installed on the console and the public exploits available for that firmware. The available exploit and tool chain can change as projects are updated or as new releases appear.
That means two consoles with different version numbers may have different options, while two consoles with the same number may still require different instructions depending on the project, payload, browser or other components involved. The number lets you begin the investigation; it does not complete it.
Understand the layers of a “compatible” setup
Community pages do not always use the word compatible to mean the same thing. Before treating a claim as an answer, identify which layer it covers.

For example, documentation for the etaHEN project describes homebrew-related capabilities, but its repository landing page is not an exhaustive compatibility chart for every PS5 firmware. A page describing a payload should not be read as a complete firmware matrix unless it explicitly provides that information.

How to evaluate a compatibility claim
After recording your version, compare it with current documentation from the maintainers of the exploit or tool you are considering. Use these checks rather than relying on an unattributed list copied into a forum post:
- Maintainer authority: identify whether the page is maintained by the project responsible for the exploit, payload or setup.
- Specific firmware coverage: look for your exact version, not merely a nearby number or a broad phrase such as “older firmware.”
- Update date: check when the page was last revised. Scene information can become stale after a Sony release or a project change.
- Scope: determine whether the page covers an exploit, a payload or a complete working procedure.
- Prerequisites and limits: read the conditions attached to the claim, including any required sequence or supported environment.
If a page does not state the exact firmware coverage, treat that omission as unresolved rather than assuming support. A list that says only “PS5 homebrew supported” is not enough to decide what to do with your console.
Why you should not rely on a fixed firmware list
There is no reliable, permanent compatibility table that can be inferred from the version screen alone. Community projects change quickly, and the public exploit set can change independently of Sony’s version numbering. A table copied from an older guide may describe a tool that has been superseded, a payload that no longer applies, or a procedure with conditions that are not visible in the table.
Do not treat a community compatibility statement as Sony guidance. Sony’s official documentation concerns system software operation and update procedures; it does not certify homebrew exploits or payloads. Confirm your exact version against current documentation from the relevant tool maintainers immediately before proceeding.
A cautious workflow before you attempt anything
- Read the installed version. Use Console Information and record the complete value.
- Separate status from version. Note whether the screen says “Up to date,” but use the numeric version as the identifier.
- Identify your intended tool chain. Determine whether the documentation concerns an exploit, a payload or a complete setup.
- Check exact coverage. Find your precise version in current maintainer documentation, including any stated restrictions.
- Check the document’s currency. Look for a revision date or other indication that the instructions account for recent system software changes.
- Do not update while researching. Keep the installed state unchanged until you understand how an update would affect the plan.
- Recheck immediately before acting. If time has passed or Sony has released new software, return to the documentation and verify that the same version and procedure are still covered.
This workflow does not establish that a particular homebrew method is safe or available. It prevents a more basic mistake: acting on an incorrect or stale version assumption.

Looking in the wrong menu
Symptom: You are viewing System Software Update and Settings and see an update prompt, but not the installed version you intended to document.

Correction: Return to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Use that page for the installed version; use the update submenu only when you have deliberately decided to examine update availability.

Recording only “Up to date”
Symptom: Your notes say the console is current but contain no firmware number.
Correction: Record the value shown for the system software version. “Up to date” describes status, not the release identifier needed for compatibility research.
Using an approximate version
Symptom: You report that the console is on a “recent” or “7.x-like” release.
Correction: Reopen Console Information and copy the complete displayed value. Exact-version boundaries matter when documentation lists supported firmware.

Symptom: A page mentions homebrew capabilities, so you assume your firmware and the entire setup are supported.
Correction: Identify the page’s scope. Confirm firmware coverage, the required exploit, payload compatibility and the complete procedure separately. A project landing page may describe capabilities without serving as a full compatibility chart.
Updating to discover the version
Symptom: You start an update because the update screen is the first place you noticed a version-related message.
Correction: Do not use an update as a lookup method. The installed value is already available in Console Information. If an update has begun, follow Sony’s official on-screen process and reassess your homebrew plan only after you know the resulting installed version.

The Console Information screen cannot, by itself, tell you whether an exploit is publicly available, whether a payload is maintained, whether a complete setup is reliable, or whether using unofficial software could affect support. Those questions require current project documentation and a separate assessment of the risks and prerequisites.
It also cannot turn an unsupported version into a supported one. Installing a different system software release changes the console’s state; it does not make an unverified compatibility claim trustworthy. Keep the factual result of the version check separate from any decision about updates, exploits or payloads.
Before changing firmware, review Sony’s warning
Sony strongly recommends its official update procedures and warns that update data obtained from another source, or an altered method, may affect console operation and warranty or repair service. That warning is relevant even when the goal is to preserve or reach a firmware condition for homebrew research.
Use the official version screen to establish what is installed, then investigate the implications of any proposed update before starting it. Do not assume that a file, script or method described by a third party has the same support status as Sony’s documented process.

- Have you opened Console Information rather than starting an update?
- Did you copy the complete system software version?
- Did you record whether Up to date is displayed?
- Is the console on a beta version?
- Does the current maintainer documentation name your exact firmware?
- Does that documentation describe an exploit, a payload or a complete setup?
- Is the page current enough to account for recent software changes?
- Have you avoided unofficial update data and altered update procedures?
Only after these questions are answered do you have a sound factual starting point for further homebrew research. The menu check itself is simple; the important discipline is preserving the distinction between the installed version, Sony’s update status and a community project’s changing compatibility claims.
