How to Check Your Pixel’s Battery Cycle Count and Battery Health

Pixel 8a and later show cycle count and estimated battery health in Settings. Older Pixels can use Battery Diagnostics, while Google’s 80% capacity and model-specific cycle guidance helps determine when replacement makes sense.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a Pixel 8a or newer, you can see both the battery’s cumulative cycle count and Google’s estimated health directly in Settings. Open Settings → About phone → Battery information for cycle count, or Settings → Battery → Battery health for a Normal/Reduced status and estimated capacity. Those screens are not available on every Pixel: Pixel 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, 8 and 8 Pro do not provide the dedicated battery-health status, and older models may not show cycle count. Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold, do have Battery Diagnostics for investigating symptoms such as rapid drain.

Which Pixel models show cycle count and battery health?

Google limits the built-in cycle-count and dedicated Battery health screens to Pixel 8a and later. If your phone is a Pixel 8a, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, or a later generation, the menus described below should be available after updating Android. Menu wording can vary slightly by software version, but the Settings locations remain the same.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Google specifically says that Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro do not indicate battery-health status. Do not treat a missing Battery health menu on one of those phones as a fault. A missing cycle-count screen is also expected on models outside the documented Pixel 8a-and-newer group.

How to check your Pixel’s battery cycle count

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap About phone.
  3. Tap Battery information.
  4. Read the Cycle count value. The same page can also show the battery’s manufacture date and first-use date.

The first-use date can be earlier than the day you bought or configured the phone. Google explains that a device may be powered on during factory quality checks before it reaches a customer, so that date is not proof that a retailer sold you a used phone.

If Battery information is absent, first confirm the model. The documented built-in route is for Pixel 8a and later; repeatedly searching other menus will not make the feature appear on an ineligible phone.

How to check your Pixel battery health and estimated capacity

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Tap Battery health.
  4. Read the status, which is either Normal or Reduced when the phone can determine it.
  5. Tap Battery capacity to see the estimated remaining capacity as a percentage of the battery’s original capacity.

Normal means Google considers the estimated capacity to be within normal limits. Reduced means the reached capacity is below 80%; Google’s exact guidance is: “When the capacity is labeled as ‘Reduced,’ Google recommends replacing your battery.” A third result, Unavailable, means the phone cannot determine a battery status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The percentage is an estimate rather than a direct laboratory measurement of the cells. Google says initial battery-health values are based on laboratory results and can differ from the battery’s actual condition. Use the number with your observed runtime, shutdowns and temperature behavior rather than treating one percentage point as a precise measurement.

What a battery cycle count actually means

A cycle is a cumulative full-discharge equivalent, not necessarily one trip from 100% to zero. The phone adds partial discharges until their total equals the battery’s full capacity. For example, using 50% of the battery, charging back to 100%, and later using another 50% represents one cycle in total. Google’s example describes using a Pixel from 100% to 50% and recharging it to 100% as 0.5 cycle.

Consequently, two people can own identical phones for the same number of months and see different counts. Navigation, gaming, mobile-hotspot use, weak cellular signals, high screen brightness and frequent top-ups all change how quickly discharge equivalents accumulate. A high count is a wear indicator, not a record of how many times you connected a cable.

Google’s cycle and capacity guidance

Pixel family Google design guidance Replacement reference
Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel Fold Designed to retain up to 80% capacity for about 800 charge cycles — Google, undated Pixel battery guidance Google recommends replacement after the applicable cycle count or when remaining capacity is below 80%
Pixel 8a and later Designed to retain up to 80% capacity for about 1,000 charge cycles — Google, undated Pixel battery guidance Google recommends replacement after the applicable cycle count or when remaining capacity is below 80%

These are model-family product guidelines, not a promise that every battery will reach exactly 800 or 1,000 cycles, nor a guarantee that a battery fails immediately afterward. Google says the fuel gauge estimates capacity and that temperature, charging and discharging behavior, and general use affect actual lifespan. A phone can remain practical beyond the reference count, while unusual heat or heavy use can reduce capacity sooner.

How to use Battery Diagnostics on older Pixels

If your phone does not provide the dedicated Battery health status, use Google’s diagnostic tool where supported. On Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Tap Battery Diagnostics.
  4. Follow the checks for battery performance or the symptom you are experiencing.

Diagnostics helps investigate battery problems and determine when replacement may be appropriate. It is not a hidden cycle-counter screen, and it does not add a Battery health percentage to models that Google excludes from that feature.

Use the overnight drain check for rapid-drain complaints

When the problem is a phone that loses charge quickly rather than a known low capacity, Google suggests an overnight check:

  1. Charge the Pixel fully.
  2. Close open apps.
  3. Disconnect the charger.
  4. Leave the phone idle overnight.
  5. Check the percentage lost in the morning.

Google’s troubleshooting guidance says that losing less than 10% overnight means the battery is working as expected under that test. The result is not a replacement threshold and cannot establish the battery’s cycle count. A short period of increased drain after an Android update can also be normal while the phone downloads and optimizes software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to interpret cycle count and health together

Looking at both indicators gives a better decision than relying on either one alone:

  • Low or moderate count, Normal status: There is no Google-indicated capacity reason for replacement. Investigate apps, signal strength, display settings and recent updates if runtime is poor.
  • High count near the family guidance, Reduced status or capacity below 80%: Replacement is the appropriate next step to restore runtime and address age-related performance changes.
  • Normal status but unexpectedly short runtime: Run Battery Diagnostics and the overnight test. Estimated capacity can be within normal limits while software, an app, heat or network conditions cause extra consumption.
  • Unavailable status: The phone cannot calculate a result. Use diagnostics and professional support rather than guessing a percentage.
  • No Battery health menu: Check model eligibility before troubleshooting. Pixel 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, 8 and 8 Pro are explicitly excluded from the dedicated status.

Cycle count and capacity answer different questions. The count describes accumulated battery use; capacity estimates how much charge the aging battery can hold compared with when it was new. Neither indicator alone predicts the exact date of failure.

Battery health assistance: what it changes

Battery health assistance is designed to slow long-term wear. Google says it adjusts the battery’s maximum voltage in stages beginning at 200 cycles and continuing toward 1,000 cycles. It may also tune charging speed as the battery ages. Those controls can produce small changes in available runtime or charging performance.

On Pixel 6a through Pixel 9 Pro Fold models covered by Google’s instructions, the setting is at Settings → Battery → Battery health → Battery health assistance. Google recommends leaving it on. Pixel 9a and later enable it by default and do not provide an option to disable it. Because the feature is unavailable on Pixel Tablet, do not look for this menu there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Charging and temperature practices that protect capacity

  • Charge in a cool place, around 25°C / 78°F, rather than under bedding, in direct sun or in a hot car.
  • Use a compatible USB-C PD or PPS charger. Google’s recommendation concerns charger compatibility; it does not mean a particular wattage will restore a worn battery.
  • Enable Adaptive Charging when its schedule suits you. It reduces the time the phone remains at a full charge.
  • Keep Android updated. Updates can improve power management, and the first hours after an update may temporarily use more power while software is optimized.
  • If storing a Pixel unused for more than 30 days, leave it at about 50% charge rather than empty or completely full.

Heat is especially important because temperature contributes to capacity decline. If the phone becomes hot while charging, remove insulating cases temporarily, move it to a cooler location and avoid demanding apps until it cools.

When Google recommends battery replacement

Google recommends considering replacement when remaining capacity is below 80% or when the applicable rated cycle count has been reached, particularly if runtime has declined. A replacement can increase runtime, improve performance in cold or warm ambient temperatures and potentially extend the phone’s useful life.

The cycle threshold is family-specific: about 800 cycles for Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold, and about 1,000 cycles for Pixel 8a and later. Apply the threshold to the model you own, and treat it as guidance rather than an automatic failure date.

Repair choices, self-repair and safety

Google says genuine spare parts and step-by-step repair guides are available through iFixit for supported devices and countries. Battery and part availability varies by region and by exact Pixel model, so check the battery-availability table for your location before ordering anything. Do not assume that a marketplace listing is genuine or safe simply because it uses a Pixel model name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google recommends self-repair only for people with relevant technical experience. If you have not previously worked on glued smartphone batteries, use a professional repair option instead. A battery replacement involves opening the phone, handling adhesive and working near delicate cables; a mistake can damage the device or create a safety hazard.

If the battery is swollen

Stop using the phone if the display or back begins to lift, the device rocks on a flat surface or you otherwise suspect swelling. Do not press the phone flat, puncture it, pry it open or attempt a battery removal at home. Google directs users to repair options and advises against placing a damaged battery in household waste. Keep the device away from heat and seek qualified service for handling and disposal.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Identify the model. Confirm whether it is Pixel 8a or later before looking for cycle count or Battery health.
  2. Read the right indicator. Use Battery information for cumulative cycles and Battery health for estimated capacity and status.
  3. Separate wear from drain. If the complaint is sudden or app-related, run Battery Diagnostics and the overnight test instead of assuming the cells are worn out.
  4. Compare with the applicable guidance. Use the 800-cycle family reference for Pixel 3–8 Pro and Pixel Fold, or the 1,000-cycle reference for Pixel 8a and later, alongside the 80% capacity reference.
  5. Choose service safely. Use professional repair unless you have the experience for self-repair, and verify regional parts availability for the exact model.

Three indicators, three different questions

It helps to keep the phone’s measurements separate. Cycle count is a cumulative usage total and is documented only on Pixel 8a and later. Battery capacity is an estimate of how much energy the battery can hold now compared with its original capacity, also limited to Pixel 8a and later. Battery Diagnostics is a troubleshooting workflow available on Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold; it looks for performance problems but does not create a missing cycle count or health percentage.

That distinction prevents a common mistake: interpreting a normal overnight result as proof that the battery is still at 100% capacity, or interpreting a high cycle count as proof that a particular component has failed. Use the measurement that matches the question you are asking, then combine it with actual runtime and the phone’s behavior.

What to do when the reading seems surprising

If the first-use date predates your purchase, remember that factory quality checks can power the phone before shipment. If capacity changes by a small amount between checks, remember that the fuel gauge is estimating and that initial values come from laboratory results. If the phone reports Unavailable, do not substitute an online calculator or an unverified app for Google’s result; use Battery Diagnostics or qualified support.

For sudden drain, note whether the phone recently installed an Android update, whether signal strength is poor, and whether demanding apps or hotspot use were active. Run the controlled overnight test with the phone fully charged, apps closed and the charger disconnected. Less than 10% loss is considered expected under Google’s test, but a larger loss still needs context from Diagnostics rather than an automatic battery order.

Before arranging a replacement

Record the exact model, the displayed capacity or status, the cycle count if available, and the symptoms you see. Check whether your model falls under the approximately 800-cycle or approximately 1,000-cycle guidance, but do not wait for an exact number if the battery is swollen or unsafe. For ordinary wear, compare the reading with declining runtime and temperature-related performance. For parts, confirm that the battery is listed for your exact model and region through Google’s supported repair information and iFixit resources.

Why can’t I find Battery health on my Pixel 8?

Google specifically excludes Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro from the dedicated Battery health status. Do not treat the missing menu as a software fault. Pixel 6 and later phones can use Settings → Battery → Battery Diagnostics to investigate battery symptoms.

Does a charge from 50% to 100% count as one cycle?

No. A cycle is a cumulative full-discharge equivalent. Using 50% of the battery and recharging, then using another 50% later, adds up to one cycle. Google’s example says using a Pixel from 100% to 50% and charging back to full is 0.5 cycle.

Is 80% battery capacity an exact failure point?

No. Google uses below 80% as a replacement recommendation and gives approximate design guidance of about 800 cycles for Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold, or about 1,000 cycles for Pixel 8a and later. Actual lifespan varies with temperature, charging, discharging and usage.

What does Battery Diagnostics do that Battery health does not?

Battery Diagnostics is an official troubleshooting route on Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold. It helps investigate performance problems and whether replacement may be appropriate. It does not reveal a hidden cycle count or add a capacity percentage to models that do not support Battery health.

Why did my Pixel start losing charge faster after an Android update?

Google says somewhat higher drain for a short time after an update can be normal while the phone downloads and optimizes software. If the problem continues, close apps, check signal and heat, run Battery Diagnostics, and perform the controlled overnight test. Losing less than 10% overnight is expected under that test.

Can I replace a Pixel battery myself?

Google says genuine parts and step-by-step guides are available through iFixit for supported devices and countries, but recommends self-repair only for people with relevant technical experience. Availability varies by exact model and region. Otherwise, use a professional repair option. Never pry open or press a phone that may have a swollen battery.

Is Battery health available on Pixel Tablet?

No. Google says the Battery health feature and Battery health assistance are not available on Pixel Tablet. The phone-specific paths in this guide apply to supported Pixel phones, not the tablet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Pixel 8a and later show cycle count in Settings → About phone → Battery information and estimated health in Settings → Battery → Battery health. Older Pixels should use Battery Diagnostics instead. Treat the 80% capacity and approximately 800/1,000-cycle figures as guidance, then choose a safe, model- and region-appropriate repair when wear or symptoms justify it.
