Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe most reliable way to identify the MySQL server that is actually running is to log in and run SELECT VERSION();. From a shell, use mysql -u root -p, enter the password, and then execute the query. The result belongs to the connected server. By contrast, mysql --version reports the installed command-line client, while mysqld --version reports the server binary stored on disk.

Choose the check that answers your question
“MySQL version” can mean four different things on a Linux host: the client program you invoke, the server binary on disk, the server process accepting connections, or the distribution package installed by the package manager. Those values can diverge after an upgrade, a partial installation, or a service restart that has not yet occurred.

If your question is “what version of MySQL is running on my server?”, use SELECT VERSION();. It is the only command in this list that directly reports the server associated with a live database connection.
Check the running server with SQL
Interactive method
- Open an SSH session or local terminal on the Linux machine.
- Start the MySQL client with
mysql -u root -p. - When prompted, enter the password for that MySQL account.
- At the
mysql>prompt, runSELECT VERSION();. - Read the returned value as the version of the server handling that connection.
mysql -u root -p
SELECT VERSION();
The semicolon terminates the SQL statement. If you connected successfully, the query completes without requiring a separate operating-system package lookup. The value describes the server instance, not merely the client executable that opened the connection.

Non-interactive method
For scripts, health checks, or a one-off shell command, send the query with the client’s -e option:
mysql -u root -p -e 'SELECT VERSION();'
The client requests the password, runs the SQL statement, prints the result, and exits. This is useful when you need the running server’s version without entering the interactive shell.
When several MySQL servers exist
A Linux host can contain more than one client, binary, or database instance. The SQL result is tied to the endpoint selected by your connection settings. If the command connects to a local socket or port you did not intend to use, it can legitimately return a different server version from the one you expected. Confirm which account and connection you used before comparing the result with a package or binary check.
Understand mysql --version versus SELECT VERSION()
These commands answer different questions and should not be substituted for one another.
| Command | Answer | Requires a live database connection? |
|---|---|---|
mysql --version |
Which version of the MySQL command-line client is installed and being invoked? | No |
SELECT VERSION(); |
Which version is the connected MySQL server reporting? | Yes |
mysql --version (or its short form, mysql -V) prints the client program’s version and then exits. It does not log in, inspect a server, or prove that the daemon is running. The MySQL 8.4 Reference Manual documents this client option.
SELECT VERSION(); runs on the server after authentication. Therefore it remains the decisive check when the client and server were upgraded at different times, when a remote server is involved, or when several installations are present on one machine.

Check the client version from the Linux shell
Run either spelling:
mysql --version
mysql -V
This check needs no MySQL password and does not depend on a running service. It is appropriate when you are diagnosing a client installation, checking which executable your shell can find, or documenting the tools available on a host.
Do not interpret this output as proof of the server version. A client can connect to a server with a different release, subject to compatibility and configuration. If the command is unavailable, continue with the path troubleshooting section below rather than assuming that no server is installed.
Check the server binary on disk
mysqld is the MySQL server executable. Query its version without starting the service:
mysqld --version
mysqld -V
This reports the binary found through your shell’s command path. It is useful for checking files installed on disk, but it is not automatically the version currently serving connections. If an administrator replaced the binary and did not restart the service, an already running process can continue to use the older executable. In that situation, compare mysqld --version with SELECT VERSION(); and treat the SQL result as the running instance’s version.
Use the MySQL shell’s built-in status commands
STATUS;
After logging in, run:
STATUS;
The status display includes the server version together with connection details. It is convenient when you are already inside the interactive client and want context about the current session in the same screen.
SHOW VARIABLES LIKE '%version%';
To list version-related server variables, execute:
SHOW VARIABLES LIKE '%version%';
This returns multiple variables whose names contain “version,” rather than one single value. Use it when you need the server’s version variables for diagnosis or configuration review. For a concise answer to the basic version question, SELECT VERSION(); is clearer.

Use mysqladmin when you want a shell-level server check
The administrative client can request server information without opening an interactive SQL prompt:
mysqladmin -u root -p version
After authentication, it prints server details that include the server version string. This is a practical alternative when a script or administrator already uses mysqladmin for service diagnostics. It still requires access to a running server, so it cannot replace the no-login checks for a binary or package.

Debian and Ubuntu
On Debian-based systems, query the package database:
dpkg -s mysql-server | grep Version
This shows the version recorded for the installed mysql-server package. It describes package state on the host, not necessarily the process currently accepting connections. A package update can occur before a service restart, so use a SQL query as well when you need to establish the active server version.
RHEL, CentOS, and Fedora
On RPM-based systems, search installed packages with:
rpm -qa | grep mysql-community-server
The result identifies the installed MySQL Community Server package version where that package name is used. Package naming and available packages vary by distribution and repository, so interpret an empty result as “that package name was not found,” not as proof that no MySQL-compatible server exists.

What to do when Linux says mysql: command not found
The shell message means it cannot find a mysql executable through the current PATH. It does not by itself establish whether MySQL is installed or whether a server is running.
- Check whether the client was installed under a directory that is not in your current
PATH. - Invoke the client with its full filesystem path if you know where the executable is located.
- Use the package query for your distribution to check whether the server package is installed.
- Check the server binary separately with
mysqld --versionif that executable is available.
Once you can invoke a client, run SELECT VERSION(); against the intended connection. A path issue is a client-discovery problem; it is not a version result.
A practical decision procedure
Use this sequence when you are unsure which value matters:
- Need the version of the active database? Log in and run
SELECT VERSION();. - Cannot or do not want to log in? Run
mysql --versionfor the client ormysqld --versionfor the server executable on disk. - Need to document what the operating system installed? Query
dpkgon Debian/Ubuntu orrpmon RHEL/CentOS/Fedora. - Already inside the MySQL shell? Use
STATUS;for version plus connection information, orSHOW VARIABLES LIKE '%version%';for the version-variable list. - Need a shell command that contacts the server but does not open a prompt? Use
mysqladmin -u root -p versionormysql -e 'SELECT VERSION();'.
How to interpret conflicting results
Client and server differ
A different value from mysql --version and SELECT VERSION(); is not automatically an error. The first describes the client binary; the second describes the connected server. They are separate programs and may be maintained on different schedules, especially when the server is remote.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Binary and running server differ
If mysqld --version does not match SELECT VERSION();, the service may still be running an older process after a binary upgrade. The on-disk executable reflects what would be used when the server starts, while the SQL result reflects the process handling your current connection. Verify the service’s restart and connection target through your normal operational procedures before changing anything.
Package and executable differ
Package metadata records what the package manager installed. The executable check reads a binary found on disk, which might come from another installation or path. Compare the exact command paths used by your shell and the package name reported by the package manager. Do not treat a package result as a live-process check.
Best Value
Permissions, credentials, and safe command use
The SQL-based checks require a MySQL account that can establish a session. The examples use the root account because it is the supplied command form, but the important requirement is successful authentication to the intended server. The client and package checks do not need a database login; they depend on access to the relevant executable or package database instead.
Using -p without placing a password directly in the command causes the client to prompt for it. This avoids putting the password in the visible command text. Keep the query itself simple: version checks read metadata and do not modify tables or configuration.

Applications using the MySQL C API can call mysql_get_client_version() to obtain the client library version as an integer. The value uses an XXYYZZ layout; for example, version 8.4.9 is represented as 080409. This is a programming interface, not a command you can run directly in a Linux shell, and it describes the client library.
Version views and MySQL 8.4 guidance
The MySQL 8.4 documentation marks the sys schema’s version view as deprecated and directs users toward VERSION(). For current checks, prefer the supported SQL function through SELECT VERSION(); rather than building a workflow around that deprecated view.
MySQL versus MariaDB
The commands above are written for MySQL. Linux distributions can also provide MariaDB, and package names, binaries, output, and compatibility behavior can differ between the two database products. If you are unsure which server is installed, identify the package and query the running server before applying MySQL-specific maintenance guidance. The command distinctions in this guide—client, server binary, running server, and package—remain the key concepts, but product-specific interpretation should be verified against the database actually in use.
Recommended verification record
For an upgrade audit or incident report, record the results separately instead of writing down one ambiguous “MySQL version.” Capture:
- The exact output of
SELECT VERSION();from the server connection being investigated. - The output of
mysql --versionfor the client used to connect. - The output of
mysqld --versionfor the server executable on disk, when available. - The relevant
dpkgorrpmpackage result for the host’s distribution. - Whether each command required a login and whether it was run before or after a service restart.
This separation makes it possible to explain discrepancies instead of accidentally presenting a client or package version as the version of the live database.

Bottom line
For the question “what version of MySQL is running on my Linux server?”, authenticate to the intended instance and run SELECT VERSION();. Use mysql --version for the client, mysqld --version for the on-disk server binary, and dpkg or rpm for package metadata. Keeping those four checks separate prevents the most common version-reporting mistake: confusing what is installed with what is actually serving database connections.
