Answer the condition questions honestly. The estimated amount depends on the model and condition, so an inaccurate description can make the estimate less useful.

Understand what the estimate means
Apple verifies a device after receiving it. If its inspection finds that the phone does not match the condition you described, the final value may differ from the online estimate. An in-store assessment can also differ if the device’s condition is not as described. Apple’s Trade In FAQ explains that value depends on “the device, model, manufacturer, and condition.” See Apple’s Trade In information for the applicable terms.
Apple says an eligible trade-in value can be applied toward a purchase or provided as an Apple Gift Card. If the device is not eligible for credit, Apple says it can be recycled for free. Check which outcome applies to your transaction before counting the estimate toward your upgrade budget.

Compare the offer with your full upgrade cost
Do not compare upgrade options using the headline trade-in estimate alone. Look at the verified value and how you will receive it, then compare that with the full price and terms of the upgrade you are considering.

Prepare the iPhone before trading it in
Before handing over your device, follow Apple’s iPhone trade-in preparation instructions for backing up your data, signing out, and erasing the phone. Also check Parts and Service History. Apple says a repair marked “Finish Repair” should be completed before trade-in.
