How to Check Your CPU Temperature in Windows, macOS, and Linux

CPU temperature access varies by computer: Windows depends on maker and sensor support, macOS Activity Monitor shows CPU activity, and Linux users can try lm-sensors.

There is no single temperature checker that works on every computer. Windows readings depend on your PC maker, firmware, and sensor support; macOS’s Activity Monitor shows CPU activity, not temperature; and Linux users can try lm-sensors if their hardware and drivers expose readings. In every case, check what the sensor label actually measures before treating a number as a CPU temperature.

Before you check: know what the number means

A temperature app can report only what the computer’s sensors and software path make available. A field labelled “temperature” might belong to the processor, motherboard, graphics card, or surrounding system. Even CPU readings can refer to different points, such as a core or the processor package, so unlike labels should not be compared as if they measured the same thing.

  • Look for an explicit label such as CPU, core, or package; do not assume a generic system-temperature field is the CPU.
  • Treat a displayed value as a reading from that specific hardware and software—not as a diagnosis on its own.
  • If no CPU reading appears, the machine may not expose one through a supported driver or user-facing tool. That does not prove the processor lacks a sensor.

Check CPU temperature in Windows

Windows does not provide a universal end-user screen or command for CPU temperature across PCs. Microsoft’s thermal-management design documentation describes Windows receiving thermal information from firmware/ACPI thermal zones or temperature-sensor drivers; it does not establish that Settings, Task Manager, or one command will show a processor reading on every computer. The values available and the thermal zones depend on the PC’s design. Microsoft also notes that a reported thermal value may be an actual sensor reading or an extrapolation based on several sensors. Microsoft’s Windows thermal-management design guide explains these interfaces.

Use the computer maker’s tool or firmware diagnostics

  1. Check the support page for your exact computer model, or open the monitoring utility bundled by its manufacturer, and follow that maker’s current instructions for viewing hardware temperatures.
  2. If the maker offers no Windows readout, check whether the computer’s UEFI/BIOS diagnostics include a hardware-monitoring screen. Availability and labels vary by model.
  3. Confirm that the displayed field identifies the CPU, core, or package. A motherboard, GPU, system, or ambient reading is not interchangeable with a CPU reading.

For a desktop assembled from separate components, a motherboard maker’s utility may provide a CPU reading. Use only software whose support and instructions match the exact motherboard and Windows version; a vendor utility is not a universal Windows solution.

Check CPU temperature on a Mac

Apple’s Activity Monitor is for viewing CPU activity and history; its guide does not document a CPU-temperature display. Use it to investigate processor load rather than to look for a temperature number: open Activity Monitor and review CPU use to find processes consuming substantial resources.

Apple recommends checking for processes that put substantial load on the CPU and watching for unexpected fan use if a Mac seems warm or noisy. Apple also cautions that third-party apps do not measure the laptop’s external case temperature and should not be used to diagnose a possible hardware problem. For ongoing operating-temperature issues, contact Apple or an authorized service provider. See Apple’s Mac laptop operating-temperature guidance.

Keep ambient temperature separate from CPU temperature

Apple’s recommended ambient operating range for Mac laptops is 10–35°C (50–95°F). This is the temperature of the environment around the laptop, not a CPU-core target or limit. Apple also recommends using the laptop on a stable surface with good ventilation—not on bedding—and keeping objects clear of ventilation openings.

Check CPU temperature in Linux

On Linux, the lm-sensors project’s sensors command reports readings exposed by supported hardware-monitoring drivers. Package names and installation steps vary by distribution, but the usual sequence is to install the distribution’s lm-sensors package (or its equivalent), run detection when appropriate, and inspect the results.

  1. Install lm-sensors using your distribution’s package manager and package name.
  2. If suitable for your system, run sudo sensors-detect and follow its prompts. It may need administrator privileges to check for supported monitoring hardware.
  3. Run sensors in a terminal. Look for a clearly identified CPU-related reading and note its label and units.

Detection depends on kernel hardware-monitoring drivers. Some laptops expose no supported monitoring chip, so detection may find nothing and the command may not provide a CPU temperature. The lm-sensors project documentation describes the command and these support limits.

Intel coretemp readings

For Intel processors supported by Linux’s coretemp driver, the kernel documents readings from embedded digital thermal sensors, including per-core and per-package temperatures. The documented interface reports Celsius values with 1°C resolution; that resolution applies to this driver interface, not to every Linux sensor or temperature tool. The processor’s TjMax—the model-specific maximum junction temperature—is not one universal figure. See the Linux kernel coretemp documentation.

What to do when a reading is missing or concerning

  • No reading appears: Check whether the computer maker supports a monitoring utility for your exact model, or whether Linux has a supported hardware-monitoring driver. Missing software-visible data is not proof that the CPU has no sensor.
  • Several readings disagree: Compare their labels first. A core, package, motherboard, or ambient reading can refer to a different measurement point; firmware, drivers, and the reporting tool also affect what is exposed.
  • The computer stays unusually hot, throttles, shuts down, or has persistent abnormal fan behavior: Use the manufacturer’s support channel rather than diagnosing a hardware fault from one number. For persistent Mac operating-temperature concerns, Apple specifically recommends contacting Apple or an authorized service provider.
