PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no single browser button that scans for every malicious extension. Check the extensions installed in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, disable or remove anything you do not trust, and reset affected browser settings if needed. If unwanted changes continue or suggest a wider infection, scan the computer separately: a browser reset does not establish that the device is clean.
1. Review your installed extensions
Open the browser’s own extension manager and inspect every installed item. Check its name, publisher, purpose, and requested permissions. An unfamiliar extension is not automatically malicious, but remove or disable one you cannot identify or no longer trust. Do not add a replacement until you have checked its publisher and permissions.

Google Chrome
Open Chrome’s Extensions manager from the browser menu and review the installed extensions. Menu labels can change between versions; use Chrome’s extension-management controls to disable or remove items you do not want. Google’s guidance on removing unwanted ads, pop-ups, and malware also recommends checking the computer for unwanted programs.
Microsoft Edge
- Open Extensions, then choose Manage extensions.
- Switch off an extension to disable it. To uninstall it, open its extension icon or its More actions menu and choose Remove from Microsoft Edge.
- If an add-on listed on the Edge Add-ons site appears to violate policy or contain malware, use its Report abuse option.
See Microsoft’s instructions for adding, turning off, or removing Edge extensions. Microsoft notes that extensions can affect the search engine, new tab page, and site preferences; disable or remove one that appears to change settings unexpectedly. Edge may also turn off extensions for reasons such as compatibility or policy.

Mozilla Firefox
Open Firefox’s Add-ons and themes manager and review the extensions listed there. Disable or remove anything you do not recognize or trust. If you are troubleshooting a problem, Firefox offers a less permanent test before you remove add-ons or change settings.
2. Test whether an extension is causing the problem
Firefox Troubleshoot Mode
Firefox Troubleshoot Mode temporarily disables extensions and makes other diagnostic changes. Start it using Firefox’s troubleshooting option, then check whether the unwanted behavior stops. If it does, an extension may be involved; return to normal mode and disable extensions individually to narrow down the cause. Troubleshoot Mode is temporary, not a cleanup or malware scan. Mozilla explains the process in Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems.

3. Reset settings when unwanted changes remain
A reset is a cleanup step for browser configuration, not a way to identify every threat. Consider it after reviewing extensions if settings such as the homepage, search engine, startup tabs, or new-tab page remain changed. Read what the reset affects before confirming: it may remove customizations you want to keep.
Chrome: restore original settings
- Open Chrome and go to Settings.
- Select Reset settings, then Restore settings to their original defaults.
- Review the changes and confirm the reset.
Google says this restores selected settings; it is not a complete reset. Affected items include the default search engine, homepage and startup tabs, new-tab page, pinned tabs, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. Bookmarks and passwords are not deleted or changed, and some settings—such as fonts and accessibility settings—are not reset. See Reset Chrome settings to default.

Firefox: refresh only if a temporary test is not enough
Refresh Firefox is more disruptive than Troubleshoot Mode. Mozilla says it removes extensions and themes, extension data, and preference configurations. Use it only after considering those consequences and whether you can restore the customizations you rely on. Details are in Mozilla’s Refresh Firefox instructions.
Edge: check extensions and settings individually
Use Edge’s extension controls to disable or remove a suspect add-on, then review browser settings it may have changed. The Microsoft guidance cited here describes extension management and reporting; it does not establish one universal Edge reset procedure for every version or managed device. Follow the current instructions for your Edge version if you need to restore other settings.

4. Scan the computer if symptoms persist
Browser controls and a device-level malware scan address different layers. If ads, redirects, or other suspicious behavior continues after you remove suspect extensions or reset settings—or you suspect unwanted software beyond the browser—check the computer for unwanted programs and scan it with reputable security software obtained from its official website. Google recommends checking for unwanted programs before resetting Chrome, while Mozilla notes that malware can cause Firefox problems and recommends periodic scans for viruses, spyware, or other malware. Do not turn off or ignore security warnings; see Google’s guidance on unwanted ads, pop-ups, and malware.
5. If an extension returns or settings are locked
An extension that reappears, settings that cannot be changed, or controls disabled by policy may indicate that the browser or device is managed. Menus and available actions can vary by browser version and organization policy. Do not delete policy keys or profile files using generic instructions; contact your organization’s administrator or consult current support guidance for your browser and device.
