Before installing a World of Warcraft addon, match its latest downloadable file to the exact game flavor you play, then check the file’s supported-version information and maintainer notes against your current patch. Treat “out of date” and compatibility warnings as clues rather than automatic proof that an addon is broken.
Start with the exact WoW game flavor
First identify the game version you are launching—such as the relevant Retail or Classic branch—and choose an addon file intended for that flavor. A project page can list several downloadable files; the project itself is not proof that every file supports every WoW flavor. CurseForge explains that a flavor-mismatch warning means the installed file does not match the game flavor in which it is being used. CurseForge’s incompatible-addon guidance describes the warning and its possible causes.

Check the project page and the specific file
- Review the project’s game-version or flavor tags. Confirm that the page indicates support for the branch you play.
- Inspect the particular downloadable file. Check its supported-version information rather than assuming all files under the project support all flavors.
- Look at the file’s release date and changelog, if available. A recent release is useful context, but recency alone does not establish patch compatibility. Prefer an explicit maintainer update or support indication for your current version.
- Check the file’s .toc Interface metadata when available. CurseForge describes the Interface number as identifying the game flavor/version the file refers to. The project’s tags and file metadata should agree; authors are responsible for keeping them accurate. See CurseForge Support’s Multi-TOC documentation.
As CurseForge Support puts it, “With each new World of Warcraft version the interface needs to be updated according to the new number.” That number is version metadata, not a test proving that the addon’s code works with every change in the game.

Understand what each warning means
Do not treat all warnings as interchangeable. A warning about a wrong flavor points to a mismatch between the file and the game branch. Choose the build listed for your flavor instead of forcing the wrong file into that game’s addon folder. A warning that an addon is out of date generally points to version metadata that may not have been updated for the current game version.
#1 Best Overall
CurseForge says an incompatibility warning signals a possible inconsistency; it does not necessarily mean the addon will fail. It may still work, or it may fail or behave unexpectedly. The warning alone cannot settle which is true for your setup. CurseForge’s explanation of incompatible-addon warnings distinguishes the warning from a guarantee of failure.
Avoid changing the .toc Interface number merely to hide an out-of-date warning. Editing the label does not establish that the addon code is compatible with changed game APIs.

Use in-game compatibility information as supporting evidence
The in-game Addon Control Panel (ACP) can show compatibility information for addons that provide compatibility specifications. If ACP has no compatibility details for an addon, that absence is not proof that the addon is incompatible; it may simply lack the relevant metadata. See ACP’s compatibility information.

What to do after a patch or expansion launch
- Check the addon’s project page and file list again for a build that matches the new game version and flavor.
- Read the maintainer’s release notes or support statement where available; update timing differs from project to project.
- If the correct-flavor file is still flagged as out of date and there is no compatible release, waiting for the author is the conservative choice.
- If you choose to try an older build, understand that a warning is not proof of failure but the addon could malfunction. Do not mistake a successful load for a maintainer’s compatibility guarantee.
CurseForge notes that addon support varies and that authors may need time to upload compatible versions after Classic expansion changes. An update can clear a warning, but availability and timing depend on the project. See CurseForge’s guidance on addon updates and warnings.

- Flavor match: Is there a specific file identified for your exact game branch?
- Current-patch evidence: Does the file or maintainer identify support for the version you play?
- Warning type: Is the message about a stale Interface number, a flavor mismatch, or another inconsistency? Check the explanation before deciding what to do.
- Maintenance: Has the author published a build following the patch?
- Strength of evidence: Tags, metadata and manager warnings help screen choices, but they are not runtime tests or substitutes for a current maintainer statement.
