How to Check Wildfire Smoke Levels Without a Local Sensor

The AirNow Fire and Smoke Map lets you check wildfire smoke without owning a sensor. Learn how to find nearby PM2.5 readings, interpret the map and respond when data is limited.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the U.S. EPA and U.S. Forest Service AirNow Fire and Smoke Map to check wildfire smoke near you without owning a sensor. Search your city or ZIP code, allow location access, or move the map to the area you care about. Then inspect nearby PM2.5 readings, the monitor or sensor type, and the recent trend. The AirNow app also includes the map.

You do not need a personal device to get a useful picture of local smoke. The map combines data from public monitors and crowdsourced sensors, and it adds fire and smoke information. But a nearby reading is an estimate, not a measurement at your exact address. Use the available readings, their trends, and local guidance together—especially when the data is sparse or conditions are changing.

Check the smoke map, not just the ordinary AQI dial

Wildfire smoke is especially associated with fine particle pollution called PM2.5. The AirNow Fire and Smoke Map focuses on PM2.5 and brings together readings from permanent and temporary monitoring stations and crowdsourced sensors. It also shows fire locations and, when available, smoke information such as outlooks and plumes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The ordinary AirNow AQI dial can be misleading during a smoke event if there is no nearby PM2.5 monitor, or if a different pollutant is driving the displayed AQI. A reassuring dial does not necessarily mean that smoke-related particle levels have been measured close to you. If you can see or smell smoke but the dial looks reassuring, open the Fire and Smoke Map and look specifically for PM2.5 readings in your area.

The map is a practical no-cost first stop because it brings several kinds of information into one place: measurements, their categories and histories, and fire or smoke context. It is not a promise that every neighborhood has a sensor or that every displayed point is current at the moment you view it. The key question is not simply “What is the AQI?” but “What PM2.5 information is available near me, what kind of device reported it, how has it been changing, and how close is it to the place I care about?”

How to check wildfire smoke near you

  1. Open the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map or the AirNow app. The app includes the map. You can use the public map even if you do not own a sensor; the map draws on a wider network of public and crowdsourced readings.
  2. Choose the place you want to check. Search by city or ZIP code, allow geolocation, or pan and zoom to the location. If you are checking conditions for somewhere other than where you are standing, move the map to that place instead of assuming your current location answers the question.
  3. Inspect nearby measurement icons. The map distinguishes permanent monitors, temporary monitors, and sensors. Select an icon to see its AQI category, recommended actions, daily history, and whether conditions appear stable, improving, or worsening. The icon type matters: a map may show more than one kind of measurement point, and you should not assume every point represents the same monitoring setup.
  4. Compare more than one nearby reading when possible. Look at the readings’ trends as well as their current categories. A single point several miles away is not a precise measurement at your home or workplace. If several points are available, check whether they tell a broadly similar story or whether conditions appear different across the area.
  5. Check the map settings for NOAA smoke plumes. They may not be displayed by default. Turn them on if the plume information would help you understand the broader smoke picture. A plume layer provides context about smoke; it is not a substitute for a local PM2.5 measurement.
  6. Refresh the map if it has been idle. A map that has been left open may not show the latest information. Refresh it before relying on the display, while remembering that a refresh cannot create a reading where no monitor or sensor is reporting.
  7. Check forecasts and local advice. Smoke can change during the day, so consult state, local, or Tribal air-quality sources as well as AirNow. A current measurement describes reported conditions at a point in time; forecasts and local updates can help you account for conditions that may change.

This sequence works whether you are checking near home, work, or another destination: find the location, inspect the nearest points, compare type and trend, look at smoke context if useful, and then check local advice. If there is only one distant point—or none at all—be explicit with yourself about that limitation rather than treating the map as a street-level reading.

How to interpret the AQI categories

The map uses these AQI ranges. The category helps describe the reported air quality; it does not make a reading at one point an exact measurement for every nearby address.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
AQI Category
0–50 Good
51–100 Moderate
101–150 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
151–200 Unhealthy
201–300 Very Unhealthy
301 and above Hazardous

Use the category together with the monitor’s history and nearby readings. A category is useful for understanding the reported conditions, but a map point cannot account for every local difference or tell you exactly what you are breathing indoors. If two nearby points show different categories, do not assume one must be wrong: wind, terrain, smoke movement, and local sources can contribute to differences. Compare the locations and trends, and treat the readings as evidence about conditions rather than as a precise measurement for every address.

Also keep the ordinary AQI display and the smoke-specific map in their proper roles. A general AQI dial may be based on a pollutant other than PM2.5, or may have no nearby PM2.5 monitor to report. The Fire and Smoke Map is the more relevant place to check when your specific concern is wildfire smoke. If that map is sparse too, the right conclusion is that local measurement is limited—not that the air must be clean.

What a nearby reading can—and cannot—tell you

It is a useful estimate, not a doorstep measurement

Without your own sensor, the map gives you access to a broader network of public and crowdsourced data. That can be much more informative than relying on a general AQI display that does not show local PM2.5. But smoke plumes, wind, terrain, and localized sources can make air differ over short distances, and nearby sensors can disagree. Treat a reading from several miles away as an indication of regional conditions, not a personal measurement.

“Near” is therefore a matter of context, not a guarantee of representativeness. A point several miles from your home may help you understand the surrounding area, especially when its trend is considered with other nearby reports. It cannot tell you with certainty what is happening at your front door, at a different elevation, or inside your building. The more distance and variation there is between a reported point and the place you care about, the more cautiously you should interpret it.

When several readings are available, compare their location, type, category, and daily history. A cluster of points with similar patterns can give a more useful regional picture than a single isolated report. If values or trends differ, that disagreement is itself a reason not to treat one point as definitive. Conditions can vary across a short distance, and readings can reflect different places and monitoring setups.

Check the data’s type and trend

Permanent monitors, temporary monitors, and low-cost sensors all contribute information, but they are not interchangeable. Use the map’s icon details to identify the kind of reading you are viewing. When there are multiple points, compare them and look at each point’s daily history. A change in trend can matter when smoke moves, even if one reading does not represent your exact location.

For a sensible comparison, ask a few questions of each point: Is it reporting PM2.5? Is it a permanent monitor, a temporary monitor, or a sensor? What category does the map show? Does the history suggest stable, improving, or worsening conditions? Is there another nearby report that supports or complicates the picture? These checks help put a number in context without overstating what it can prove.

Recency matters too. A displayed value may not reflect a change that has happened since the last update, and the map can have delayed or unavailable data. Refresh an idle map and check the history or another nearby report, but do not interpret a lack of fresh information as evidence of good air. If conditions are visibly smoky, use local air-quality guidance and take sensible exposure-reduction steps while you continue checking.

Expect gaps or imperfect data

Readings can be delayed, unavailable, or erroneous. EPA says low-cost sensor data on the Fire and Smoke Map is corrected, but is for informational use only and is not used for regulatory decisions. The map is a practical way to check conditions; it is not a guarantee that every point is current or accurate at street level.

The distinction between “corrected” and “official regulatory measurement” matters. A corrected sensor reading can be helpful for understanding a local pattern, but the correction does not turn the sensor into an agency monitor or remove all uncertainty. EPA’s map disclaimer says: “For the Fire and Smoke Map, the sensor data has been corrected. It should be used for informational purposes only.” Read that as a reason to use the data thoughtfully, not as a reason to ignore it or treat it as exact.

When no nearby measurement appears, the map still may offer regional context through other points, fire locations, or smoke information. But those layers answer different questions. Fire locations identify fires, and smoke-plume information can show broader smoke context where available; neither tells you the exact PM2.5 concentration at your address. Look for measurements when the question is local particle pollution, and use the other information as context rather than as a replacement.

What to do if readings are concerning—or missing

Do not wait for a perfect measurement before reducing exposure when it is smoky. Check AirNow and state, local, or Tribal air-quality guidance. Reduce strenuous outdoor activity when smoke is present, and follow local public-health instructions. If readings are missing, delayed, or far away, the uncertainty is not a reason to assume that conditions are safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

People who must spend extended periods in smoky air may benefit from a properly fitting NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirator. Cloth masks are not an equivalent substitute for this respiratory protection. This is an exposure-reduction step, not a way to measure air quality; use the map and public guidance for information about conditions, and use appropriate protection when circumstances call for it.

For decisions about whether to go outside or how to change activity, combine the reported AQI category with the trend, the distance and type of the monitoring point, and advice from relevant local agencies. The map’s icon details include recommended actions, and state, local, or Tribal sources may provide guidance for the area. When the information is incomplete, keep the response straightforward: limit strenuous outdoor activity while smoke is present and keep checking for updated conditions.

Reduce smoke particles indoors

EPA identifies portable air cleaners, DIY air cleaners, and high-efficiency HVAC filters as options for reducing smoke particles indoors. EPA recommends CARB-certified air cleaners because they produce little or no ozone. These are exposure-reduction options, not substitutes for checking outdoor conditions, and an indoor measurement or estimate is not the same as an outdoor reading.

EPA’s indoor-strategies guidance says that, during wildfire smoke events, indoor PM2.5 is generally around 55% to 60% of outdoor levels when windows and doors are closed and no portable air cleaner is in use. That is context, not a prediction for a particular home: the same source reports substantial variation, from 30% to 100% of outdoor levels. The range is a reminder that outdoor readings do not translate into one guaranteed indoor number. Home conditions vary, and this estimate should not be used as a personal measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are using an indoor reading from a personal PM2.5 sensor, interpret it as information about the particles that device is designed to detect. The public map and local air-quality sources can help you understand outdoor conditions, while an indoor reading can add localized information inside your space. Neither removes the need to consider data limits or follow relevant health advice.

Would a personal sensor help?

A personal PM2.5 monitor is optional. It can add localized information when public coverage is sparse, including information about indoor conditions. It is not a replacement for agency monitors or a complete measure of smoke-related health risk.

Before buying or using one, check what pollutant it measures, whether it is intended for indoor or outdoor use, how it displays and corrects data, and whether its readings can be compared with nearby public reports. A PM2.5 sensor measures the particles it was designed to detect; it does not detect gases or visible smoke high in the atmosphere. EPA’s wildfire sensor fact sheet gives a general sensor cost range of under $100 to several hundred dollars. That is the range reported by the source, not a current retail-price survey.

Those comparisons are more useful than treating price alone as a measure of quality or suitability. First decide whether you need an indoor or outdoor reading and confirm the device measures PM2.5. Then consider how it presents readings and whether it explains its correction method. Finally, compare what it reports with nearby public readings when possible. A consumer device may add a point of local information, but it does not become government-grade because its results resemble an agency monitor on one occasion.

A sensor also has a defined scope. A device built to measure PM2.5 does not measure every pollutant associated with smoke and does not detect visible smoke high in the atmosphere. It cannot provide a complete account of exposure or diagnose health risk. If coverage is sparse, a personal monitor can make local information more available, but it should be understood as one limited input alongside AirNow, local guidance, and what is happening around you.

Even a sensor reading should not be treated as a reason to ignore smoke or delay sensible precautions. EPA’s wildfire sensor fact sheet says to “take action to reduce your exposure regardless of what a sensor is reading.” The point applies whether the number comes from a consumer device or a public map: use measurements to inform your understanding, not to overrule caution when smoke is present.

Which source should you use?

For a no-cost public check in the United States, begin with the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map. It is the smoke-specific tool described here, focuses on PM2.5, and combines permanent and temporary monitors with crowdsourced sensor reports. The AirNow app includes the map as well. If you are comparing public information sources, look at the same basic factors: whether PM2.5 is reported specifically, how close and what type of monitor or sensor is reporting, how current the information is, whether trends or forecasts are available, and what limitations the agency explains.

The ordinary AirNow dial is still a useful general air-quality display, but it may not answer a wildfire-smoke question if it is showing a different pollutant or lacks a nearby PM2.5 monitor. A state, local, or Tribal air-quality source is also worth checking for local advice and forecasts. Use sources together where appropriate: a map point provides a reported measurement, history gives a sense of direction, smoke layers add context, and local agencies provide guidance for their area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Crowdsourced sensors can expand the number of visible data points, but their presence on the map does not make them equivalent to permanent agency monitors. The map’s inclusion of contributed data is a way to add information, not an endorsement of a particular consumer product. Check the icon type and EPA’s stated limitations rather than assuming every dot has the same status.

Frequently asked questions

How bad is the air quality near me if I don’t see a local sensor?

Start with the nearest available PM2.5 readings on the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map, check their categories and histories, and look at more than one point if possible. A reading several miles away can indicate regional conditions, but it is not a precise measurement for your address. If there is no nearby report, check state, local, or Tribal air-quality guidance and do not assume missing data means clean air.

Is an air-quality app accurate if there is no monitor nearby?

An app can only show the information available to it; without a nearby PM2.5 reading, it cannot provide an exact local measurement. The ordinary AQI dial may also reflect a pollutant other than PM2.5. Use the Fire and Smoke Map to inspect available smoke-related points, note their type and trend, and treat distant readings as estimates. Sensor data can be delayed or erroneous, and EPA says the map’s low-cost sensor data is informational only.

How can I check AQI for wildfire smoke?

Open the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map or the AirNow app, search your city or ZIP code or move the map to the area, then select nearby PM2.5 measurement icons. Review the category, daily history, and trend; compare multiple points if available. The AQI categories run from Good at 0–50 through Hazardous at 301 and above. Also check local agency advice, since smoke and readings can change during the day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy a sensor if public coverage is sparse?

You do not need one to use the public map. An optional personal PM2.5 monitor can add localized information, including indoors, but it measures only the pollutant it was designed to detect and does not replace agency monitors or provide a complete health-risk assessment. EPA’s fact sheet gives a general cost range of under $100 to several hundred dollars; it is not a current retail-price survey. Compare pollutant, indoor or outdoor suitability, data display and correction, and whether results can be compared with nearby public readings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How bad is the air quality near me if I don’t see a local sensor?

Check the nearest PM2.5 readings on the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map, including their categories and histories, and compare multiple points if possible. A distant reading is an indication of regional conditions, not a measurement at your address. Check local air-quality guidance, and do not assume missing data means clean air.

Is an air-quality app accurate if there is no monitor nearby?

An app cannot provide an exact local measurement without a nearby PM2.5 reading. Use the Fire and Smoke Map to inspect available points, their type and trend; treat distant readings as estimates. Data can be delayed or erroneous, and EPA says low-cost sensor readings on the map are informational only.

How can I check AQI for wildfire smoke?

Open the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map or app, search for a place or move the map, and select nearby PM2.5 icons. Review each category and trend, compare points where possible, and check local agency advice because conditions can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy a sensor if public coverage is sparse?

A personal PM2.5 monitor is optional and can add localized indoor or outdoor information. It measures only the pollutant it was designed to detect and does not replace agency monitors or provide a complete health-risk assessment. Compare its pollutant, intended setting, data display and correction, and compatibility with nearby public readings.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: When you do not have a local sensor, use the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map to find nearby PM2.5 readings, inspect the type and trend of each point, and compare reports rather than relying on a single distant value or the ordinary AQI dial. Readings are estimates and may be delayed, missing, or imperfect. If smoke is present, reduce exposure and follow AirNow and local, state, or Tribal guidance rather than waiting for a perfect measurement.
