Find an explicit competitive-patch number or tournament-realm statement, then verify that number and its release date in Riot Games’ patch notes. The newest patch shown in your game client is not proof: tournaments may deliberately play on an older, tested, or event-specific patch.
What counts as reliable evidence?
A tournament patch is an event rule, not a value you can safely infer from the live client. Start with documents published for the exact competition: its rulebook, format guide, stage announcement, or an official notice from the organizer. Those materials can specify a patch, explain when it takes effect, or reserve the right to change it.

| Source | What it can establish | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Current tournament rulebook | The competition’s selected patch, testing period, stage boundaries, and exceptions | Rules may apply only to a named season, region, league, or stage |
| Official event announcement | A direct statement such as “the event starts on patch X.Y” | An announcement can cover one stage while later stages receive a separate notice |
| Riot Games tournament announcement | A patch Riot has designated for a specific event | It does not automatically set the patch for unrelated tournaments |
| Riot patch notes and archive | The patch number, publication date, and Riot’s description of its competitive use | Patch notes alone do not select a patch for every organizer |
| Client version, stream overlay, or spectator display | A clue about the software environment visible at that moment | It may be outdated, mislabeled, or show a different build from the tournament server |
When two sources conflict, give priority to the latest official material written for the exact event. A general patch note confirms what Riot released; the organizer’s current rule tells you what that tournament selected.
Verify the exact event before checking a patch
Many errors come from researching the right game but the wrong competition. Record all of the identifiers below before searching:

- Official event name and season
- League or tournament organizer
- Region, if the competition is regional
- Stage, such as qualifier, regular season, playoff, or final
- Match date or match week
- Whether you are checking a professional event, an amateur bracket, or a community tournament
“The 2026 championship” is not precise enough if qualifiers, regional leagues, and the world event use different rules. A patch announcement for a final cannot be assumed to cover an earlier qualifier. Use the event’s official spelling when searching, and note whether the page describes the whole season or only a particular stage.
Step-by-step: find and confirm the competitive patch
- Open the organizer’s official source. Use the event website, current rulebook, format guide, or announcement channel controlled by the organizer. Avoid relying on a search-result snippet because it can preserve an old version after the page changes.
- Search within the document. Use your browser’s find command for
patch, competitive patch, tournament realm, live patch, version, andrelease. Also search for the stage name, because a patch rule may be under a section titled “Game Settings” or “Competitive Operations.” - Copy the complete statement. Record the patch number exactly, including both parts of the version (for example, 13.8, 14.18, or 26.20), the effective date, and any language about exceptions, delayed adoption, or official discretion.
- Check whether the rule is conditional. Phrases such as “subject to league approval,” “after a testing period,” “unless otherwise announced,” or “officials may determine the patch” mean the number is not necessarily final until a later notice appears.
- Open Riot’s patch-note archive. Locate the matching patch and confirm that its number and publication date correspond to the organizer’s statement. This catches typographical errors and confusion between similarly dated patches.
- Read the matching notes for tournament language. Riot sometimes identifies a patch as the official patch for a named event. Treat that wording as strong confirmation for that event, while still checking the organizer’s own rules for local exceptions.
- Check for a later update. Search the organizer’s news page and official social channels for a patch-change notice posted after the original rulebook. The newest event-specific notice controls if it clearly supersedes the earlier document.
- Report the result with scope. State the event, stage, region, patch, source title, and publication date. If the documents do not name a patch, say that it could not be confirmed from available official materials instead of guessing from the client.
How to use Riot’s patch notes correctly
Riot’s archive answers two useful questions: which patch was released? and when did Riot publish it? It may also answer a third: did Riot designate this patch for a particular tournament? It does not answer the broader question “what patch does every tournament use?” because organizers can select different versions.
As of the dates documented in the official archive, Patch 26.20 was published on October 6, 2026, and Patch 26.19 was published on September 22, 2026. Those entries establish Riot’s release history. They do not, by themselves, establish the version used by an unrelated league playing during that period.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When matching a patch note to an event, compare:
- The exact version number, including the decimal portion
- The note’s publication date with the event’s match dates
- Whether Riot names the event, stage, or game mode
- Whether the organizer’s rulebook adopts, delays, or overrides that version
Release date, effective date, and match date are different
Do not collapse these dates into one. Riot’s publication date tells you when the patch was released or documented. An organizer may announce that the competitive version begins later, after testing, or only at the start of a stage. The match date tells you which event rule was in force when the game was played. A patch published before a match is therefore only a candidate, not proof that the match used it.
For a verifiable report, save the title and date of the organizer’s notice, the Riot note’s publication date, and the first match date to which the rule applies. If an announcement is edited, look for a dated update or a later notice rather than assuming the original wording still controls.
Why the newest live patch may not be the tournament patch
Competitive events need time to test balance changes, server behavior, champion updates, and newly introduced features. A tournament can therefore remain on an older patch after the live service has advanced.
The 2020 LCS rule set illustrates this approach, but it is not a universal current rule. Section 10.4 said games would use the current live-service patch after a sufficient testing period, gave a guideline of one full calendar week after live release, and said a patch would not be implemented once a match week or playoff round had started. It also stated that changes to the competitive patch were at the league’s discretion.

The document’s wording was explicit: “Changes to the competitive patch will be at the discretion of the League.” That sentence explains why a live-client check cannot replace the current event rule. Use the 2020 LCS document only as an example of how a league may manage updates. Its timing and discretion provisions cannot be presented as the present rule for every league, season, or tournament. Your event’s current rules take precedence.
What “tournament realm” means for your check
Some competitions run on a controlled environment rather than the ordinary live queue. A rulebook may call this a tournament realm or another event server. In that case, the realm’s configured patch is the relevant version even if public players are already on a newer build.
Do not treat the existence of a tournament realm as proof of a particular number. You still need the organizer’s statement or an official event notice identifying the version. If the document says officials will configure the realm without naming the patch, report that the environment is controlled but the exact version is not publicly confirmed.
A realm statement can also explain why two apparently conflicting observations are both genuine: spectators may see the public client’s current version while teams play on a locked event build. Record the named patch and the realm instruction separately, so a server description is not mistaken for a version number.

| Event | Patch named by Riot | Publication or effective detail | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid-Season Invitational 2023 | 13.8 | Riot’s Patch 13.8 notes said MSI would start on patch 13.8 on May 2, 2023 | A direct event-specific selection for that tournament |
| World Championship 2024 | 14.18 | Riot’s Patch 14.18 notes, published September 10, 2024, called it the official patch of the 2024 World Championship | A named championship patch, not a rule for other events |
| Worlds 2026 | 26.20 | Riot’s Patch 26.20 notes, published October 6, 2026, called it the Worlds patch and identified it as the patch for year-defining competitive Summoner’s Rift play | Useful confirmation for that Worlds context; do not generalize it to every tournament |
Riot’s wording for Patch 14.18 was, “Welcome to patch 14.18, the official patch of the 2024 World Championship!” Patch 26.20 similarly says, “For Summoner’s Rift, this is the patch we’ll be seeing our year-defining competitive play on.” Those statements are unusually strong because they identify the event or competitive context directly. They still apply only to the named championship context.
These examples demonstrate the verification method: locate a statement tied to the event, then match its patch number to the corresponding Riot notes. Historical examples show precedent, not an automatic schedule for a later season.
When an event has several stages or regions
Read patch information at stage level. A qualifier may begin on one version, a main event may move to another, and a playoff can remain fixed while the live game changes. Regional competitions can also publish separate notices.

Qualifiers and main events
Look for separate rulebooks or addenda. If the qualifier document names a patch but the main-event announcement names another, apply each number only to its stated stage. Do not use the main event’s patch to fill a gap in the qualifier rules.
Regular season and playoffs
Check whether a patch is locked at the start of a match week or playoff round. A league may allow a later update between stages while prohibiting a mid-round change. A date range or “beginning with” clause is more useful than a general statement that the league follows live service.
Cross-region events
Confirm that the source covers the region you are watching. A patch selected for one domestic league is not evidence for another region’s competition, even when both events occur in the same month.
New champions, reworks, hotfixes, and emergency changes
A patch number may not tell the whole operational story. Rules can restrict a newly released or reworked champion even when the event is otherwise on the current competitive patch. Look for a separate “disabled,” “restricted,” or “unavailable” list.
Also check for emergency notices. An organizer may keep the same patch number while disabling a champion, item, or feature because of a bug. Conversely, officials may move the event to a different build after a severe problem. Record those restrictions separately from the patch number so you do not describe a champion ban as a patch change.
If a notice changes only availability, quote it as a restriction. If it changes the software version, record the new patch, the affected stage, and when the change takes effect. This distinction prevents a later reader from assuming every emergency decision was a full patch migration.
How to resolve conflicting or outdated documents
- Compare publication and update dates on both documents.
- Check whether one document is explicitly limited to a stage, region, or match week.
- Look for language such as “supersedes,” “updated,” or “unless otherwise announced.”
- Prefer a later organizer notice that clearly addresses the same event and stage.
- If the conflict remains unresolved, present both statements and say that the exact current patch is unconfirmed; contact tournament officials rather than choosing the version that merely matches the client.
A general Riot note should not override an event-specific organizer update. Conversely, an old rulebook should not override a later official change notice. Keep a copy or link to each dated source when publishing your conclusion, because event pages can be edited after matches occur.

Sources that are useful clues but not proof
- Watching a broadcast: overlays can be prepared in advance or fail to update.
- Checking your own client: your region and queue can be on the live build while the event server uses another version.
- Reading player posts: competitors may discuss a build informally, but only an official notice establishes the event rule.
- Using a third-party match database: databases can label games incorrectly or update after publication; use them to locate a match, not to establish the governing rule.
- Assuming the latest patch: this ignores testing windows, stage locks, and tournament-realm configuration.
What to do when no patch is published
First, check the organizer’s most recent rules, announcements, and competition-operations updates. If none names a version, look for contact instructions for tournament officials. Ask a narrowly worded question that identifies the event, stage, region, and match date.
A responsible answer can be: “The current public rules do not state a competitive patch for this stage; Riot’s latest published patch is X.Y, but that does not confirm the tournament build.” This separates a verified fact from an inference and tells readers exactly what remains unknown.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not fill the gap with a patch inferred from a broadcast, a player’s post, or the date of the most recent live release. The accurate result may simply be that the public materials do not confirm the version. That is more useful than a precise-looking but unsupported answer.
A concise reporting template
When publishing or sharing your result, use a statement with enough context to remain accurate:
“For [event], [stage], [region], the organizer’s [document title] dated [date] specifies patch [X.Y] for matches beginning [date]. Riot’s patch notes for [X.Y], published [date], confirm the version. The rule also lists [any delay, restriction, or discretion].”
If the evidence is incomplete, replace the confirmation sentence with: “No current official event source located for this stage names a patch, so the tournament version cannot be confirmed from public materials.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the latest League of Legends live patch automatically the tournament patch?
No. A tournament can use a delayed or specifically selected version, and a tournament realm can remain on an older build while the public client updates. Confirm the event’s rulebook or announcement first.
Best Value
Which source should I trust if Riot’s patch notes and a league rulebook seem different?
Use the latest official material for the exact event, stage, and region. Riot’s notes establish what was released; the organizer’s current rule determines what that competition selected.
Does a Riot announcement for Worlds apply to every League tournament?
No. Statements naming MSI, Worlds, or another event are event-specific. They provide strong confirmation for that event but do not set the patch for unrelated leagues or community brackets.
How can I verify that a patch number was typed correctly?
Match the complete number, including its decimal portion, to Riot’s patch-note archive and compare publication dates. Then check whether the organizer’s document uses a different effective date or stage limitation.
What if the rules mention a tournament realm but do not name a patch?
Report that the event uses a controlled environment but that the exact version is not publicly confirmed. Do not infer the number from your own client or a broadcast overlay.
Can a tournament keep the same patch while changing champion availability?
Yes. An organizer may disable a newly released or reworked champion, item, or feature because of a bug without changing the patch number. Record restrictions separately from the patch.
What did the 2020 LCS one-week guideline mean?
That historical LCS rule set used a guideline of one full calendar week after live release, avoided changing versions after a match week or playoff round began, and left changes to league discretion. It is an example from 2020, not a universal current rule.
What should I say when no official source names the patch?
State that the version could not be confirmed from current public official materials. You may mention Riot’s latest published patch as context, but clearly label it as unconfirmed for the tournament.

The Bottom Line
Identify the exact event and stage, read its latest official rule or announcement, and verify the named version against Riot’s patch notes. Treat live-client versions, overlays, player comments, and historical rules as clues only; if no current official source names a patch, report the uncertainty.
