To see whether the camera is active right now, use its hardware light or activity indicator. These are different checks: a permission list is not a complete record of past or current camera use.
Check webcam access in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Check Camera access to see whether camera access is enabled for the device, and Let apps access your camera for Microsoft Store apps.
- Review the individual app toggles in the Store-app section to see which listed apps are allowed to use the camera.
- Review Let desktop apps access your camera. Windows does not provide an individual toggle here for each desktop app. It may show desktop apps it detected interacting with the camera; selecting a listed app can show details about the file on the device that accessed it.
For current activity, look for the camera’s hardware light. Microsoft says, “If your device has a camera light, the light turns on when the camera is active.” If the device has no camera light, Windows shows a notification when the camera turns on or off. Microsoft’s Windows camera and privacy guide describes these indicators.

Check webcam access in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera.
- Check Camera access and Allow apps to access your camera.
- Review the individual Microsoft Store app controls.
- Review Allow desktop apps to access your camera. This setting does not let you control desktop apps individually.
These are the Windows 10 labels; they differ from Windows 11. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 does not stop working on that date, but it no longer receives standard support. See Microsoft’s camera and privacy instructions for the Windows 10 path and limitations.
What Windows’ camera list can—and cannot—tell you
The Store-app controls show permissions for the listed apps, while desktop-app visibility is less complete. Microsoft notes that desktop apps might not appear, may access some data differently, or may still access the camera through methods not covered by the desktop-app setting—even when that setting is off. The setting therefore is not a complete audit trail.

- Windows Hello: It can use the camera to sign you in even when the ordinary Camera access setting is off.
- Indirect app use: If an app uses the Camera app through a Windows component, Windows may identify the component rather than the app. Microsoft gives “Speech Runtime Executable” as an example for microphone use.
For these limitations and details about camera permissions, see Microsoft’s guide to managing camera app permissions and its overview of Windows privacy settings.
Check webcam access on a Mac
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera. Older macOS releases may use different names for the settings interface.
- Review the listed apps. Apple says, “The list shows apps you’ve installed that have asked to use the camera.” Turn access on or off for an app using its switch.
- To check for current use, look for the green light beside the camera. The green privacy indicator also appears next to Control Center when the camera is in use.
- Open Control Center. Its top field may identify apps using the camera.
The permission list shows apps that have requested access; it does not necessarily identify which app is using the camera at this moment or provide a complete history. Apple says FaceTime, Photo Booth, and other apps included with the Mac automatically have camera access and do not need to request permission. According to Apple, the camera and its green light turn off when all apps that can use it are closed or quit. See Apple’s guide to camera access on Mac and its guide to Control Center.

Check a website’s camera permission separately
A website in a browser has a site-level permission in addition to the browser’s permission from Windows or macOS. For Microsoft Edge, open Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site Permissions > All sites, select the website, and review its Camera permission. For Safari on Mac, open Safari > Settings > Websites > Camera. Changing a site’s permission does not replace checking the browser’s operating-system camera access. Microsoft documents Edge’s controls in its Windows camera and privacy guide; Apple covers Safari in its Mac camera access guide.
