Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe most reliable way to find out whether a downloaded app is behind Android lag is a safe-mode comparison. Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps. Use the phone normally in that state: if the slowdown disappears, Google says a downloaded app is likely involved; if it remains, investigate storage, updates, connection conditions, or device-specific problems instead. Safe mode does not identify the exact app, so the final step is to restart normally and remove recently installed apps one at a time, testing after each removal.
Start with checks that can make the whole phone feel slow
Do these checks before testing individual apps. They separate a phone-wide condition from a problem introduced by one downloaded app. They also give you a baseline, so you know exactly what changed when you begin removing software.

Describe the symptom before changing anything
Write down what “slow” means on your phone. It might be delayed taps, stuttering while scrolling, a keyboard that appears late, an app that freezes during launch, or web pages that take a long time to load. Note when the problem began, which actions trigger it, and whether it happens every time or only after the phone has been running for a while. A precise symptom is easier to reproduce than a general impression that the phone feels sluggish.
Restart the phone
A restart is the quickest way to determine whether the sluggishness is temporary. After it comes back on, repeat the action that felt slow: open the same screen, switch between the same apps, or reproduce the freeze. Note whether the problem returns immediately or only after the phone has been running for a while. Do not treat a brief improvement after restarting as proof that a particular app is at fault; it only tells you that the state of the phone changed.

Install available Android and app updates
Check for an Android system update and update the apps from your normal app store. The labels and menu locations differ by manufacturer and Android version, so use the update screens provided on your phone. Retest after the updates finish rather than judging performance while updates are still installing. If an update changes the behavior, record the app or system version and the task that improved.
Check free storage
Open the phone’s storage screen and look at the amount of space still available. Google Android Help cautions that a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free. That is troubleshooting guidance, not proof that an app is responsible and not a guarantee that freeing space will solve the lag. If you are below that level, remove or move files you no longer need, then restart and test again. Keep enough space for normal updates; otherwise an update may fail and leave the phone in the same state.
Decide whether the problem is local or online
If apps are slow only when loading web pages, synchronizing, streaming, or signing in, check the network connection before blaming an app. Try the same action on a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection, and note whether offline actions such as opening Settings or viewing an already downloaded photo are also slow. A connection problem can resemble app slowness but will not be diagnosed by removing a downloaded app. If both online and offline actions are delayed, treat that as a broader device symptom.

Use safe mode as the broad app test
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps while leaving the phone’s basic system available. It is a comparison, not a performance benchmark: you are checking whether the same symptom appears with downloaded apps switched off. Because it is a broad test, it can tell you whether third-party software is likely involved but cannot name the package responsible.
Enter safe mode using your phone maker’s instructions
There is no single button sequence that works on every Android phone. Google notes that safe-mode entry and exit vary by manufacturer and model. Look up the instructions for your exact device in its support documentation. Avoid applying a sequence meant for a different model, because the labels and buttons can differ. If the manufacturer’s instructions use a power-menu option, follow that wording exactly; if they use a hardware-button combination, confirm that it applies to your model.
Reproduce the slowdown
- Before entering safe mode, write down the exact symptom and the steps that normally trigger it. For example, note whether scrolling stutters, an app freezes on launch, or the keyboard appears late.
- Enter safe mode with the manufacturer’s procedure. The phone should indicate that it is in safe mode, commonly with an on-screen label.
- Use the phone normally for long enough to repeat the problem. Test the same screens and actions rather than trying an unrelated task. If the symptom occurs only occasionally, allow enough time for the usual conditions to recur.
- Record whether the symptom is gone, reduced, or unchanged. Also note features that cannot be tested because downloaded apps are disabled.
Do not compare a complicated app workflow in normal mode with an unrelated Settings screen in safe mode. The more closely the two tests match, the more useful the result. Keep the same network, charging state, and storage condition when possible, and write down any condition you could not keep constant.
Interpret the result correctly
| Safe-mode result | What it means | Next move |
|---|---|---|
| The problem disappears | A downloaded app is likely involved, according to Google’s troubleshooting guidance. | Restart normally and narrow the suspect by removing recent downloaded apps one at a time. |
| The problem remains | The symptom is not explained by a downloaded app alone. | Continue with storage, updates, connection, and device-specific troubleshooting; contact the manufacturer or carrier if necessary. |
| The result is unclear | The test was not comparable or the symptom was intermittent. | Repeat the same sequence, allow enough normal use, and keep a written record of what changed. |
Improvement in safe mode makes an app a likely contributor; it does not reveal which app is responsible and does not prove that the app is the only cause. If the slowdown persists in safe mode, do not keep deleting downloaded apps as though the test had identified one. A built-in system problem, limited storage, a network condition, or another device-specific issue may still be present.

Isolate the likely app one removal at a time
When safe mode points toward downloaded-app involvement, the controlled approach is incremental removal. Google recommends starting with recently downloaded apps and checking the phone after each removal. “Recently” should include apps installed or updated shortly before the trouble started, not merely the last app you happened to open.
- Restart the phone normally to leave safe mode.
- Make a short list of apps installed or updated shortly before the slowdown began. Include apps that run in the background, not just the app visible when the lag occurs.
- Choose one recent downloaded app to remove. Use the app-management screen supplied by your Android version and confirm that you are removing the downloaded app you selected.
- Restart if the phone requests it, then repeat the exact action that previously caused the problem.
- Record the result before changing anything else. “Fixed,” “unchanged,” and “intermittent” are more useful notes than relying on memory.
- If the problem remains, remove the next likely recent app and retest under the same conditions.
- Stop when the original symptom consistently disappears. The last removed app is a likely contributor, but check by reinstalling it only after the phone has remained stable and only if you need to confirm the diagnosis.
Removing apps one at a time matters because deleting several together tells you only that one of the group might have mattered. It also makes recovery easier: Google notes that an app removed during this process can be reinstalled if it was not the cause. Reinstalling an app can bring back its behavior, so do it only after you have recorded a stable baseline and are prepared to remove it again.
Keep a diagnosis log
Write down the app name, the date it was removed, the task you tested, and the result. Also record whether the phone was charging, in Battery Saver, on Wi-Fi or mobile data, and close to the storage limit. These conditions can change the symptom and make two tests look different even when the app list is the same. A log prevents you from removing the same app twice or forgetting which change produced an improvement.
Use battery information as a clue, not a speed meter
Android’s battery-use screen can show which apps consume substantial battery. That information is useful when the phone is both draining quickly and feeling slow, but high battery use alone does not establish that an app is slowing the phone. Battery impact and responsiveness are different measurements.

Check app battery use
Open the battery settings and view the app-use breakdown. Android labels and paths vary by device. Look for an app that uses unusually high battery relative to your normal pattern, especially if the timing matches the slowdown. Treat the entry as a lead for the safe-mode and one-at-a-time tests, not as a verdict. An app can use battery heavily without producing visible lag, and a lagging app may not be near the top of the battery list.
Restrict a high-use app only when appropriate
Android support recommends restricting apps with high battery use. Restriction can limit background activity and may change how notifications, synchronization, or other features behave. Apply it as a controlled troubleshooting change, then retest the task that was slow. If a feature becomes delayed because background work is limited, record that result rather than calling it a performance fix. Undo the restriction if it prevents a function you need and it does not improve the original symptom.
Account for Battery Saver
Battery Saver can limit background activity. That limitation can make some features or apps respond later, so note whether Battery Saver was enabled during each test. Compare behavior with the setting in the same state; otherwise you may attribute a power-saving delay to the wrong app. A change that occurs only while Battery Saver is active should be described as a power-management effect, not automatically as an app fault.

Pixel Battery diagnostics has a limited scope
Google’s Pixel Phone Help identifies Battery diagnostics as available on Pixel 6 and later. Do not expect that feature or its exact settings path on every Android phone. Other manufacturers may expose different battery information, and the absence of a named diagnostics screen does not by itself indicate a fault.
| Battery observation | Safe conclusion | Unsafe conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| An app is near the top of battery use | Investigate it if battery drain and the timing of lag match | It definitely causes the slowdown |
| Battery Saver is on | Some background work may be delayed | Every delayed action is caused by a downloaded app |
| Pixel 6 or later shows Battery diagnostics | Use that device-specific information as an additional clue | The same feature exists on all Android models |
What Android usage diagnostics can and cannot tell you
Android has settings for sharing usage and diagnostics information with Google. Those settings describe information that may be sent for product and reliability purposes; they are not a local tool that identifies which installed app is making your phone feel slow. Do not enable or disable usage reporting expecting it to perform the safe-mode comparison or name a culprit. For a local diagnosis, rely on the phone’s observable behavior, safe mode, and one-at-a-time removal.
What to do when safe mode does not change anything
If the phone is still slow with downloaded apps disabled, shift away from app removal. Recheck free storage, complete pending system updates, and test whether the issue is limited to online tasks. Then follow the troubleshooting instructions for your exact manufacturer and model. Google directs users to the device manufacturer or carrier when general Android troubleshooting does not resolve the problem.
Separate an app symptom from a phone-wide symptom
Test several built-in areas while the phone is in normal mode: open Settings, view a stored photo, type a short note, and perform the online action that usually feels slow. If every area lags, the cause is broader than one visible app. If only one downloaded app fails while the rest of the phone responds normally, focus that app’s own update, account, and support options after completing the safe-mode comparison.
Use a factory reset only as a last resort
A factory reset is not an initial way to identify a slowing app. Google warns that it removes data and apps and recommends backing up first. Consider it only after the less destructive checks and manufacturer guidance have been exhausted, and verify that you can restore the information you need before starting. A reset should not be used simply because a battery list looks unusual or because safe mode was entered incorrectly.

Common diagnostic mistakes to avoid
Assuming safe mode names the culprit
Safe mode answers a narrower question: does the problem still occur when downloaded apps are temporarily turned off? Only the one-at-a-time removal process can narrow the list of likely apps.
Deleting many apps simultaneously
Mass removal destroys the comparison. Change one variable, perform the same test, and keep the result in your log.

Reading battery rankings as performance rankings
Battery-use data describes battery impact. It is relevant when battery drain accompanies the lag, but it cannot by itself prove a speed problem.
Using another model’s safe-mode instructions
Button combinations and menus differ among manufacturers. Follow instructions for the exact phone rather than a generic sequence found for another model.
Changing several conditions between tests
Switching Wi-Fi, Battery Saver, charging status, and app versions all at once makes the result difficult to interpret. Keep conditions similar and document unavoidable differences.
Resetting before protecting data
A factory reset erases the phone’s data and apps. Back up and use it only as a late troubleshooting step after the app test and device support options.
A practical decision path
- Describe the symptom and record the exact steps that trigger it.
- Restart and reproduce the symptom.
- Install available Android and app updates.
- Check storage; treat Google’s less-than-10%-free warning as a troubleshooting threshold.
- Test whether only online tasks are affected.
- Run the same reproduction steps in safe mode using your manufacturer’s instructions.
- If the problem disappears, restart normally and remove recent downloaded apps one at a time.
- After each removal, repeat the same task and log the result.
- If it remains, stop blaming downloaded apps and continue with device-specific support.
- Use battery information only as supporting evidence, while noting Battery Saver and model-specific features.
- Reserve a backed-up factory reset for the final stage, not app identification.
This sequence gives each test a distinct job: basic checks look for common phone-wide conditions, safe mode tests downloaded-app involvement, and incremental removal narrows a likely app without changing everything at once.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does safe mode show whether an app is slowing my Android phone?
Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps. Repeat the same task that normally lags. If the problem disappears, Google says a downloaded app is likely involved; safe mode does not identify which one.
What if my phone is still slow in safe mode?
Do not keep deleting downloaded apps based on that result. Recheck storage, updates, and connection conditions, then follow support instructions for your phone’s manufacturer or contact your carrier.
Best Value
How many apps should I remove at once?
Remove one recently downloaded or updated app at a time. Test the same symptom after each removal so you can connect the result to a specific change.
Does high battery use prove that an app is causing lag?
No. Battery use measures power impact, not phone speed directly. Use it as a clue when battery drain and lag occur together, then confirm with safe mode and controlled removal.
Why is my app slow only when Battery Saver is on?
Battery Saver can limit background activity, which may delay some features or apps. Compare tests with Battery Saver in the same state before blaming a downloaded app.

Google’s cited Pixel guidance lists Battery diagnostics for Pixel 6 and later. Other Android manufacturers may provide different screens or tools.
Will a factory reset tell me which app caused the problem?
No. A reset removes data and apps and is a late-stage troubleshooting step, not an identification test. Back up first and use it only after less destructive checks and device support guidance.
Should I turn on usage and diagnostics sharing to find the bad app?
No. Usage and diagnostics settings describe information that may be shared with Google; they do not perform a local safe-mode comparison or identify the app slowing your phone.
The Bottom Line
Restart, update, check storage and connection conditions, then run the same task in safe mode. If the slowdown disappears, restart normally and remove recent downloaded apps one at a time, testing after each change. Treat battery rankings and Pixel-specific diagnostics as clues only, and use manufacturer support or a backed-up factory reset only after the controlled app test.
