1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo see which apps and phone features are consuming power, open Settings > Device care (or Battery and device care) > Battery > View details. The detail screen lists battery use by app and feature. On some Galaxy models or older software, the same information is labelled Battery usage instead of View details.
Samsung changes menu names and screen layouts by model, region, Android version and software release. If the wording on your phone differs, open the Battery section inside Device care and look for the screen that lists usage by app. This built-in screen is enough to investigate battery drain; you do not need a separate battery-monitoring app.

Open the battery-use list
- Open Settings.
- Tap Device care or Battery and device care.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap View details.
The resulting screen shows battery consumption by app and by built-in feature for the period selected on your phone. Samsung Canada describes this as checking battery usage by app and feature. Depending on the layout, you may first see a graph, a percentage summary or a list. Scroll through the Battery page and open the chart or detail control if the list is not immediately visible.
If you do not see View details, stay in the Battery section and look for Battery usage. Samsung’s older UK instructions use Settings > Device care > Battery > Battery usage for the list of apps that have used power. The two labels are alternate menu designs; they are not guaranteed to appear together.

When you open an app or feature entry, the phone may provide more context for the selected period. Treat that information as an account of recorded consumption, not as a statement that Samsung has identified a fault. An app can legitimately be high because you used it heavily, while a system feature can be high because of the way you used the phone.
Why your menu may look different
There is no single Galaxy menu path that Samsung guarantees for every phone. Names, locations and available controls can vary with the model, software or app version. A recent phone may use Battery and device care, while another uses Device care. Likewise, the detail control may say View details, Battery usage or use a similar Battery-screen label.
| Documentation wording | Path | What it shows | Where you may encounter it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newer wording | Settings > Device care or Battery and device care > Battery > View details | Usage by app and feature | Samsung’s current Canada guidance; exact availability depends on model and software |
| Older wording | Settings > Device care > Battery > Battery usage | Apps that have used battery | Samsung’s UK guidance updated for an older Device care layout |
Use the path that matches the labels on your phone rather than forcing an instruction written for a different Galaxy generation. A change in wording does not mean your phone has lost battery reporting. It usually means Samsung moved or renamed the same type of control. The exact screen can also differ after a software update, so an older screenshot may not match your current menus.
How to read the results
Check the period and scope
Before changing anything, note the time period displayed on the usage screen. A list covering the day, since the last charge or another interval can produce very different results. The percentages and ordering describe the period shown; they are not a permanent ranking of which apps are inefficient. If you have just used one app continuously, that session can dominate the chart even when the app is behaving normally.
Record the period before you troubleshoot. If you compare a later reading, use a similar type of use where possible. Otherwise, you may mistake a busy navigation trip or a long video session for a change in battery performance. The list is most useful when you connect it to what happened during that same interval.
Separate apps from system features
The list can include ordinary apps as well as features such as the screen, mobile network, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or other system activity. A feature appearing near the top is evidence that it consumed power during the selected period, not proof that it is broken. Your usage pattern, signal conditions, display settings and time away from a charger all affect the result.
For example, a display-related entry may be prominent after extended screen-on use, while mobile-network activity may reflect time spent in an area with a challenging signal. Connectivity features can appear because you actively used them, not because they are malfunctioning. Consider what you were doing before disabling anything.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Look for a pattern, not one entry
One busy session can legitimately put a navigation, video, camera or game app near the top. A more useful troubleshooting clue is an app that repeatedly appears high during periods when you barely used it, especially when the phone was idle. The Battery screen identifies where power was recorded; it does not by itself diagnose a malfunction.

Take another reading after ordinary use instead of making a decision from one unusual day. If an app remains prominent while you did not open it, inspect its background behavior. If its position falls when your usage changes, the earlier result may simply have reflected the task you performed.
What to do when one app uses more battery than expected
First open the app’s entry, if your model provides additional details, and consider whether its activity matches what you did during the selected period. Check whether it was left open, used for location, streaming, recording, navigation or another sustained task. Do not restrict an app solely because it is listed: a high entry may be normal for the work you asked it to perform.
If the app is running when you do not need it, close or exit the activity in the app itself and observe the Battery list during a later period. If the same app remains unusually active, Samsung’s Battery settings provide background-usage controls. These controls can reduce background work, but they can also delay updates and notifications.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Consider the app’s role before selecting a restriction. A rarely used game, shopping app or other nonessential app has different requirements from a messaging, security, health, work or home-control app. The goal is not to make every entry as small as possible; it is to reduce unnecessary background activity without breaking functions you depend on.
If you later notice a missed alert or delayed update, return to the same Battery controls and loosen the restriction. Battery management is reversible on supported models, and the best setting depends on whether timely background activity matters more than the possible savings.
Use Background usage limits carefully
Samsung places the relevant controls under Battery > Background usage limits on supported Galaxy software. The available categories include:
- Sleeping apps: apps Samsung allows to sleep when they are not being used. A sleeping app may still run occasionally in the background.
- Deep sleeping apps: apps do not run in the background and work only when you open them.
- Never sleeping apps: apps you exclude from the sleeping rules because you want them to remain available in the background.
- Unused apps: a setting that helps place apps you have not used into a sleeping state on models that offer it.
The exact list and controls can vary by Galaxy model and software version. Samsung’s Canada and UK guidance both warn that background restrictions may delay app updates or notifications. A messaging, security, health, work or home-control app that must deliver time-sensitive alerts should not be placed in deep sleep without accepting that consequence.

These categories are management choices, not a diagnosis. Seeing an app in the usage list does not automatically mean it belongs in Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps. Decide based on how often you use it, whether it must update while closed and how disruptive a delayed notification would be.

When ordinary sleep is appropriate
Use ordinary sleeping for an app you rarely need immediately and that does not require continuous background updates. Because a sleeping app can occasionally run, it is less disruptive than deep sleep but may provide less battery reduction. It is a reasonable middle option when you want to limit background work but still occasionally allow the app to refresh.
When deep sleep is appropriate
Deep sleep is a stronger choice for an app you open only on demand. It will not run in the background and receives updates or notifications only when you open it. That can prevent background activity, but it also means the app cannot perform routine work while closed. Do not use it for an app whose alerts, synchronization or monitoring you expect to happen without opening the app.
When to use Never sleeping apps
Use this category only for apps whose background operation is important to you. Keeping an app awake can preserve timely notifications or ongoing functions, while consuming more power than allowing it to sleep. Adding many apps to Never sleeping apps defeats the purpose of background limits, so reserve it for services that genuinely need to remain available.
What happens to notifications
Sleeping and deep sleeping are not identical. A sleeping app may occasionally run, but Samsung warns that updates or notifications can be delayed. A deep sleeping app does not run in the background and receives updates or notifications only when you open it. Explain this trade-off to yourself before applying a restriction, especially for accounts or devices that must alert you promptly.
Remaining-time estimates are a different screen
Battery and device care can also show remaining battery power and an estimated time left. Samsung Singapore notes that the estimate changes with settings and operating conditions. It is a forecast of how long the current charge may last, not the app-and-feature usage breakdown.
Use View details or Battery usage to answer “Which apps are using my battery?” Use the main Battery screen’s remaining-time estimate to answer “How long might this charge last?” Do not treat the estimate as evidence that a particular app caused the drain. A change in brightness, connectivity, signal conditions or what you do next can change the forecast without any app changing its behavior.
If you cannot find View details or Battery usage
Search within Settings
Open Settings and use its search field for Battery, Battery usage or Device care. Open the result that leads to the phone’s Battery settings, then look for a usage graph, an app list or a details control. Search is useful when a software update has moved the Device care hub or when the wording differs from an online guide.

Allow for software differences
Samsung’s older support material describes a Battery usage label, while newer material describes View details. A software update can move or rename the control, and an entry may be absent on a particular model. Do not assume the missing label means your phone cannot report usage; inspect the Battery page for an equivalent list.
Check the selected view
If you see a graph but no list, tap the graph, a details icon or an app entry. Some layouts reveal the breakdown only after selecting the chart or scrolling through the Battery page. The labels and gestures are model-dependent, so use the visible Battery controls rather than a button name from another Galaxy guide.
If none of those choices appears, confirm that you are inside Battery rather than another Device care panel. Samsung documents the usage breakdown as part of Battery settings, while remaining-charge estimates and other care tools may appear elsewhere in the same hub.
How to troubleshoot unusually fast drain
- Record the period. Open the usage details and note the period and entries shown.
- Match activity to your use. Identify whether the leading app or feature corresponds to video, navigation, gaming, photography, calls, mobile data or another task you actually performed.
- Look for idle activity. An app that repeatedly appears high while you were not using it is a stronger reason to inspect its background behavior.
- Review background limits. From Battery, open Background usage limits and decide whether ordinary sleep, deep sleep or no restriction fits the app’s notification needs.
- Observe a later period. Recheck the list after normal use. A single reading can reflect a one-off task; a repeated pattern is more informative.
This process helps identify candidates for management without treating the usage list as a diagnosis. If restricting an app causes missed alerts or delayed updates, remove it from the restrictive category or place it in Never sleeping apps, depending on your model’s controls.
When the leading item is a built-in feature rather than an app, first relate it to your recent conditions. Display use, mobile-network conditions, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other system activity can all reflect legitimate phone operation. The list tells you where consumption was recorded, but it does not prescribe turning that feature off.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing high use with a defective app. The list reports recorded consumption, not fault status.
- Ignoring the time window. A short, intensive session can dominate a list covering only that period.
- Deep-sleeping essential services. Background restrictions can delay notifications and updates.
- Comparing phones by menu wording. Different labels reflect software and model variation, not necessarily different battery hardware.
- Using the remaining-time estimate as a usage report. The estimate changes with conditions and does not identify the app responsible.
- Restricting every high entry immediately. Some high entries simply reflect intentional, sustained use.
- Assuming sleep and deep sleep are interchangeable. Deep sleep prevents background operation and has a stronger notification consequence.
- Relying on an old screenshot. Samsung can rename or relocate controls between software versions and models.
A practical decision guide
| What you see | Most useful next step | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| An app is high after heavy, intentional use | Leave it alone and monitor another period | No restriction; the recorded use may be expected |
| An app is repeatedly high while the phone is idle | Inspect its background behavior and consider ordinary sleep | Background work or alerts may occur less promptly |
| An unimportant app should never work while closed | Consider deep sleep | It will not run or deliver updates and notifications until opened |
| An essential app must alert you promptly | Avoid deep sleep; use Never sleeping apps if needed | Keeping background activity available can use more battery |
| A system feature is high in the list | Relate it to your display, signal, connectivity and usage conditions before changing settings | Turning off a feature may affect how you use the phone |
| The list changes dramatically between readings | Compare the periods and activities before changing settings | A different time window may explain the change |
| A restriction causes missed alerts | Move the app out of deep sleep or add it to Never sleeping apps if appropriate | Restoring background access can increase consumption |
What Samsung’s documentation establishes
Samsung’s support documentation in Canada, the UK and Singapore agrees on the key point: battery-use details are built into Device care, but menu names, paths and availability vary by model and software. The Canada guidance documents the newer View details route and the sleep categories. The UK pages document background-usage controls and the older Battery usage wording. One UK performance guide was updated on January 7, 2022, and Samsung Singapore’s battery tips were updated on August 1, 2022; those dates help explain why older instructions may use different labels. Singapore’s guidance also explains that remaining-time estimates vary with settings and operating conditions.
Those differences are why the safest instruction is to open Device care or Battery and device care, enter Battery, and then choose the usage-details control your phone actually presents. The wording can change, but the practical goal remains the same: identify the apps and features associated with the selected period, then decide whether any background activity is unnecessary for the way you use the phone.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check battery usage by app on a Samsung Galaxy?
Open Settings > Device care or Battery and device care > Battery > View details. If your phone uses older wording, choose Battery usage in the Battery section.
Best Value
Why does my Samsung phone not show View details?
Samsung varies labels and layouts by model and software version. Look for Battery usage, tap the Battery graph or an app entry, or search Settings for Battery usage.
Are Battery usage and View details the same thing?
They are alternate labels used in different Galaxy software layouts. Both lead to a screen intended to show battery use by apps, and newer Samsung guidance calls the control View details.
Does a high percentage prove an app is faulty?
No. It shows recorded consumption during the selected period. Heavy intentional use, streaming, navigation, gaming, display time, signal conditions and other factors can legitimately put an app or feature near the top.

Sleeping apps may still run occasionally in the background, while deep sleeping apps do not run in the background and work only when opened. Samsung warns that either restriction can delay updates or notifications, with deep sleep having the stronger effect.
Should I put a messaging app in Deep sleeping apps?
Not if you depend on alerts while the app is closed. Deep sleeping prevents background operation and notifications or updates arrive only when you open the app. Consider leaving it unrestricted or using Never sleeping apps if timely alerts are essential.
Is the remaining battery-time estimate the same as battery usage by app?
No. The estimate predicts how long the current charge may last and changes with settings and operating conditions. View details or Battery usage identifies consumption by app and feature for the selected period.
Why is a system feature at the top of my battery list?
The feature consumed power during the period shown. Relate it to your display use, signal, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, connectivity and other activities before changing settings; the entry alone does not prove a fault.
The Bottom Line
Open Settings > Device care or Battery and device care > Battery > View details to see battery use by app and feature. If your Galaxy uses older software, look for Battery usage instead. Read the time period, compare entries with what you actually did, and use Sleeping, Deep sleeping or Never sleeping controls only after considering notification and update trade-offs.
