On a Pixel, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps to see app-level battery use. On other Android phones, look in Settings for Battery or Battery usage; the route and labels vary by manufacturer and software version.
Check app battery use on a Pixel
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery usage.
- Choose View by apps to see app-level use. Choose View by systems to see system-function use.
- Review the chart and app list. The chart shows battery level since the last full charge. Tap an app to review its battery settings. Google notes that rounding can keep listed amounts from adding up to 100% (Google Pixel Help).
Find the battery list on other Android phones
Android settings differ among manufacturers and software versions, so the Pixel path is not universal. Open Settings and look for Battery or Battery usage. If you cannot find an app list or the labels differ, follow the device maker’s support instructions. Google’s general Android battery guidance also directs users to their manufacturer for device-specific steps (Android Help).

Understand what the battery list means
Read the period and activity, not just the ranking
The list is a troubleshooting clue for the period shown, not proof that the highest-listed app is malfunctioning. Consider what you were doing in the app and whether it was active in the foreground or running in the background. Where the screen reports foreground and background activity, use that detail to help interpret the entry. Battery percentages and reporting periods are not necessarily comparable across different phones.

Review background use on Pixel
To review background settings across apps on a Pixel, open Settings > Apps > App battery usage. Google recommends leaving apps set to Optimized; only some apps offer a background-use restriction. You can also tap an app from Battery usage to review its available battery controls (Google Pixel Help).

Account for recent setup or updates
On Pixel, battery optimization after setting up a new device or completing a factory reset can take a few weeks. Battery use can also temporarily increase for a few days after a software update while the phone downloads and optimizes software. Google advises seeking support if unusual drain continues after a few days (Google Pixel Help).

On Pixel 6 and later, the documented diagnostic route is Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly. This feature is documented for those Pixel models; menu availability on other Android devices depends on the manufacturer and software.
