To find out whether zram helps, compare the same representative workload with zram enabled and disabled, then weigh its completion time or responsiveness against CPU use, memory pressure, and zram’s actual RAM allocation. A smaller compressed payload proves that data was compressed—not that your system became faster.
What zram can improve—and what it costs
zram is a compressed block device in RAM. It can make more effective use of physical memory and may reduce access to slower backing swap, but it consumes CPU cycles to compress and decompress data. The result depends on the workload, CPU capacity, memory pressure, and swap configuration. The Linux kernel documents this mechanism and its device statistics in its zram documentation.
That trade-off is why a compression ratio alone is not a performance test. Your test needs to show whether the task you care about improved and what system resources were spent to achieve that result.
Plan a fair comparison
Choose a representative workload and outcome
Pick a repeatable task that reflects the slowdown or memory pressure you want to address: for example, a build, a dataset operation, or a defined set of interactive tasks. Choose the result that matters before testing:

- Elapsed time for a task that should finish sooner.
- Throughput for work performed continuously.
- Latency or responsiveness for interactive use.
- Successful completion under a fixed memory limit, if avoiding failure is the goal.
Do not substitute a synthetic compression ratio for the outcome of that task.
Record the conditions
Write down the kernel and distribution, CPU and RAM, active zram device and size, compression algorithm, active swap devices and priorities, vm.swappiness, zswap state, workload version and inputs, and concurrent system load. Keep these conditions stable between runs; if you are evaluating one configuration choice, change only that choice.

Check your active device name first—often zram0—and use its matching N in /sys/block/zramN/. Distribution setup and optional kernel features can vary, so do not assume every system exposes or configures zram identically.
Run the test and collect measurements
- Capture a baseline. With zram disabled, record the workload outcome, CPU use, memory pressure or reclaim indicators available on your system, swap activity, and the relevant zram statistics if available.
- Run the same workload with zram enabled. Preserve the same input, software, power mode, background activity, and other memory and swap settings.
- Repeat both conditions. Repeat enough times to see ordinary run-to-run variation. If practical, alternate or randomize which condition runs first so thermal changes or background-load drift do not consistently favor one side.
- Record changes, not just final readings. Capture zram statistics before and after each run, and note peak values when they matter. Also record task time or throughput, CPU use, memory pressure, and swap activity.

cat /sys/block/zram0/mm_stat
Replace zram0 with the device you identified. The kernel defines the fields and their accounting in its zram documentation. For more accurate global VM-counter reports in testing, the kernel documents /proc/sys/vm/stat_refresh: reading or writing it as root flushes per-CPU VM statistics into global totals. Read zram statistics correctly

These are accounting fields, not benchmark results. Compression can indicate that zram saved memory, but only your workload measurements can show whether the trade improved performance.

Interpret the result in context
- The task improves and CPU use rises: zram may be providing a useful trade for this workload if the outcome matters more than the added CPU cost. Check repeated runs and the memory and swap data before drawing that conclusion.
- The compression looks good but the task does not improve: the payload is smaller, but that has not translated into a measurable benefit for the chosen outcome.
- The task slows while CPU use rises: compression overhead may outweigh memory or I/O benefits for this workload. Confirm the pattern across runs and check for other sources of load.
- There was little memory pressure or swap activity: the test may not have given zram much opportunity to avoid costly backing-swap access, so a small difference is unsurprising. This is an inference from how zram works, not a guaranteed outcome.
If zram writeback is configured, pages may also be written to a backing device. The kernel documents bd_stat for backing-device counts, reads, and writes; include that activity when accounting for the test. Availability and configuration depend on the system. Keep swap settings and zswap in view
Hold swappiness constant
The kernel defines vm.swappiness as a relative-cost control from 0 to 200, with a documented default of 60. Lower values make swapping comparatively less favored; higher values make it comparatively cheaper. The kernel says values over 100 can be considered for in-memory swap such as zram, but the optimal value depends on the workload and requires experimentation. Keep swappiness unchanged when comparing zram enabled with disabled, unless swappiness itself is the setting under test. See the kernel documentation for /proc/sys/vm/.

Check whether zswap is active
zswap is a separate compressed-swap mechanism: the kernel describes it as a compressed cache for pages being swapped out. It also trades CPU work for potentially reduced swap I/O, and its activity can affect a comparison intended to isolate zram. Identify whether it is enabled and keep that state consistent between runs. See the kernel zswap documentation.
The kernel points to zramctl, included with util-linux, as a zram management utility. For the documented per-device accounting fields used in this comparison, sysfs remains the relevant source; see the kernel zram documentation.
