Use three checks, in this order: identify the exact Windows 11 version and edition, confirm what Windows Update has installed, and compare that version/edition with Microsoft’s servicing end date. A green “You’re up to date” message answers only whether offered updates are installed; it does not prove that your installed release is still within its support lifecycle.
As of October 13, 2026, Windows 11 version 24H2 has reached its listed end-of-updates date for Home and Pro. Enterprise and Education editions of 24H2 remain supported until October 12, 2027. The steps below let you determine which case applies to your PC.

A PC can report that no updates are available because it has installed everything currently offered, yet still be running a release that has passed its end-of-updates date. Conversely, a supported PC may not show a new feature release immediately because Microsoft is rolling it out in stages or has placed a temporary compatibility safeguard hold on the device.

Microsoft says Windows Update is an installation channel for the current cumulative update; business-managed computers can receive updates according to policies configured by their organization. See Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 update guidance for the deployment-channel explanation: KB5124008 (OS Builds 26200.9445 and 26100.9445).
Think of the process as checking both a delivery receipt and an expiration date. Update history is the receipt: it shows what reached this computer. The servicing page is the expiration date: it shows whether Microsoft still promises security servicing for that version and edition. Neither check can replace the other.
Step 1: Find your exact Windows 11 version and edition
Record both values. The version number alone is not enough because Home/Pro and Enterprise/Education can have different servicing dates.

- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Scroll to Windows specifications.
- Write down Edition (for example, Windows 11 Home, Pro, Enterprise, or Education) and Version (such as 24H2, 25H2, or 26H2).
Microsoft documents this path in its Windows version update-history guidance: Windows 11, version 26H1 update history.
Use the winver shortcut
- Click the taskbar Search box (or press the Windows key and begin typing).
- Type
winverand press Enter. - Read the dialog for the Windows version and build information. Return to Settings > System > About if you also need to confirm the edition.
Take a screenshot or copy the two values before moving to the next checks. If a support page, help-desk technician, or administrator asks what you are running, provide the edition and version together.
The build number shown by winver is useful when troubleshooting a failed cumulative update, but the lifecycle comparison is normally made using the version label (such as 24H2) and edition. Do not substitute a build number for the version or assume that a newer-looking build changes the published end date.
Step 2: Confirm whether Windows Update is installing updates
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update in the left pane.
- Select Check for updates and wait for the scan to finish.
- Read the resulting status. Windows may show that updates are available, downloading, installing, pending a restart, or that you are up to date.
- If Windows requests a restart, restart when practical; an update that is waiting for a reboot is not fully applied.
Then inspect the record of completed installations:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Remain on Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Update history.
- Review the latest entries under quality updates, driver updates, definition updates, and other categories. Note dates, KB numbers, and any entry marked failed or requiring action.
Quality updates are the entries most relevant to the monthly security check. Driver and definition updates can be useful evidence that the update service is working, but they do not by themselves prove that the operating-system security cumulative update installed.
For example, a compatible 24H2 or 25H2 computer may show Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 cumulative security update, KB5124008, with the relevant OS build. The presence or absence of that particular entry is not a universal pass/fail test: devices can have different servicing policies, and later updates can supersede it.
Update history proves what Windows Update installed on this computer. It does not extend the support life of an out-of-support version, and it is not a substitute for checking Microsoft’s lifecycle dates.
How to read common Windows Update messages
- “You’re up to date”: Windows found no applicable updates at that moment. It does not certify that the release is within support.
- “Restart required” or “Pending restart”: Installation has not completed until the restart and finalization finish.
- “Downloading” or “Installing”: Leave the process running and check Update history afterward.
- An error with a KB number: Record the number and error text so you or an administrator can identify the failed package.
A scan can also be influenced by organizational policy. On managed Enterprise or Education devices, deferrals, deployment rings, or approval rules can determine which updates are offered. A delayed update is not automatically evidence of a broken computer or an expired license.
Step 3: Compare your result with Microsoft’s servicing dates
Use the edition-specific dates below. They are the listed end-of-updates dates in Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 notice: KB5124010 (OS Builds 26300.9550, 26200.9550, and 26100.9550).
| Installed release | Edition | End of updates | Meaning after that date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 24H2 | Home and Pro | October 13, 2026 | Monthly security updates and protections tied to this lifecycle stop. |
| Windows 11 24H2 | Enterprise and Education | October 12, 2027 | Support continues until this later date, subject to Microsoft’s servicing policy. |
If your edition and version match a row whose date has passed, treat the installation as out of support even if Windows Update currently says “You’re up to date.” Microsoft’s guidance is: “To stay protected and up to date, we recommend you upgrade to the latest version of Windows 11.”

If your version is newer than 24H2, open Microsoft’s current release-health and update-history pages to verify its dates rather than applying the 24H2 dates by analogy. Edition-specific servicing is intentional; there is no single support period that applies to every Windows 11 PC.
Why edition changes the answer
Two PCs can both display “Windows 11 24H2” and still have different answers because one may be Home or Pro and the other Enterprise or Education. The Home/Pro deadline is October 13, 2026, while Enterprise/Education continues to October 12, 2027. Always copy the edition exactly as displayed, including whether the installation is Enterprise or Education.
Do not infer the edition from the computer’s brand, purchase price, workplace ownership, or the fact that it is joined to an organization. Read the Windows specifications panel. If the edition is unclear, give the exact About-page text to the administrator or support technician.
How to interpret the three checks together
| Version/edition check | Windows Update result | What it means | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supported release | Updates installed; no errors | Your PC is receiving the updates currently offered to it. | Keep automatic updates enabled and recheck periodically. |
| Supported release | No feature upgrade offered | The next release may be in a controlled rollout or blocked temporarily by a safeguard hold. | Check Windows Update and Microsoft’s release-health information; do not bypass a compatibility hold. |
| Supported release | Quality update failed or is pending restart | The device may not yet have the latest offered protection. | Restart if requested, record the error or KB number, and retry from Windows Update. |
| Out-of-support release | “You’re up to date” | The message covers offered updates, not lifecycle entitlement. | Move to the latest Windows 11 version that Microsoft offers for the device. |
| Managed Enterprise/Education device | Updates controlled by policy | An administrator’s servicing ring, deferral, or approval policy may determine what appears. | Ask the organization’s IT administrator for the applicable servicing schedule. |
The most important distinction is between a missing feature-upgrade offer and a missing quality update. A feature version can be staged or held for compatibility while the current version continues receiving monthly security servicing. Conversely, a machine can have a recent quality update in history and still be beyond its release’s lifecycle date.
Windows 11 24H2: the date that matters on October 13, 2026
For a personal PC running Windows 11 24H2 Home or Pro, October 13, 2026 is the listed transition date. From that date, those editions are no longer scheduled to receive the monthly security updates and protections associated with 24H2. A successful update scan on that day does not change the lifecycle result.
Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise and Education have a different end date—October 12, 2027—so an organization must first confirm the edition before deciding that a 24H2 machine is out of support. Enterprise policies can also control update timing, which is why an administrator’s records may not match the immediate consumer experience.
If your 24H2 Home or Pro installation is out of support, plan the feature upgrade rather than relying on the last quality update shown in Update history. Eligibility, hardware compatibility, and rollout timing determine which newer release Windows offers.
Do not interpret the date as a promise that every PC will display a replacement release on that exact day. Microsoft can stage an offer or apply a safeguard hold. The date tells you when the existing release stops receiving its lifecycle protections; availability of the replacement is a separate device-eligibility question.
Why a newer feature update may not appear
Controlled rollout of Windows 11 26H2
Microsoft describes Windows 11 26H2 as available through a controlled rollout for eligible PCs running 24H2 or 25H2. Microsoft can use safeguard holds when it detects a known compatibility issue, so two otherwise similar computers may not see the offer at the same time. See the Windows 11, version 26H2 update history page for availability and known-issue information.
The absence of a 26H2 offer alone does not show that monthly security updates have stopped. First verify the installed version, read Windows Update’s status, and then check whether Microsoft lists a hold or staged rollout for your hardware and software. Do not use an unofficial bypass to force an upgrade while a safeguard hold is active; the hold exists to reduce the risk of a known incompatibility.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Windows 11 26H1 is a special case
Microsoft documents 26H1 as a release for new devices with select new silicon. It is not offered through Windows Update as an in-place upgrade to earlier Windows 11 PCs. Therefore, a typical existing 24H2 or 25H2 computer should not be expected to receive 26H1 as its next feature update. Details are in Microsoft’s 26H1 update history.
Consequently, not seeing 26H1 is not a security-update failure for an existing computer. Check whether Microsoft offers the applicable 26H2 path instead, and use the release-health page to understand staged availability or known issues.
What support duration means for Windows 11 26H2
Microsoft lists edition-based support durations for 26H2 rather than one blanket period:

| 26H2 edition family | Listed support duration | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Home and Pro | 24 months | Count the supported servicing period from the release’s applicable start date; confirm the exact end date on Microsoft’s current lifecycle information. |
| Enterprise and Education | 36 months | These editions receive a longer servicing window; organizational policies can still control when updates are deployed. |
These durations are from Microsoft’s 26H2 update-history documentation: Windows 11, version 26H2 update history. Use the published date for your exact release and edition when making a replacement or upgrade plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe duration is not a guarantee that an update appears on every day of that window. It describes how long Microsoft lists the release for servicing. Device eligibility, rollout controls, and organizational deployment policy still affect when a particular PC receives a feature update or cumulative update.
Troubleshooting common results
Windows Update says an update is pending
Follow the requested restart or completion action, then return to Settings > Windows Update and run Check for updates again. Recheck Update history to confirm that the KB entry changed from pending or failed to installed. A pending restart means the update process is not complete.
An update repeatedly fails
Record the exact KB number and error text shown in Windows Update. Check whether the same entry appears as failed in Update history, restart once if Windows requests it, and retry. If the computer is managed by an organization, report the KB and error to IT rather than changing policy settings yourself.
The PC has no feature-update offer
Confirm the current version first. If the PC is still receiving quality updates and Microsoft lists 26H2 as a controlled rollout or safeguard-held release for the device, waiting is expected. Check the Windows release-health information linked from Microsoft’s 26H2 page for known issues and eligibility changes.
The installed version is past its end date
Do not treat the last successful cumulative update as ongoing protection. Back up important files using your normal backup method, verify that the hardware meets the requirements for the newer Windows 11 release, and use the supported upgrade path offered in Settings > Windows Update. If no supported offer appears, consult the device manufacturer or your organization’s administrator; do not bypass a safeguard hold without resolving the compatibility issue.
Update history shows only old entries
Run Check for updates and allow any download, installation, and restart to finish. Then look specifically under quality updates rather than relying only on driver or definition entries. If no applicable quality update appears, compare the version and edition with the servicing date and ask IT whether a policy controls the device.
The page says updates are managed by an organization
That message means local settings may not show the entire deployment decision. Do not change policy or install an unofficial package to work around it. Give the administrator the edition, version, build, latest KB entry, and error text; the organization can confirm its servicing ring and approval schedule.
A repeatable monthly check
Run this short checklist after Microsoft’s monthly update cycle or whenever you suspect support has ended:
- Open Settings > System > About and record Edition and Version.
- Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and complete any restart.
- Open Update history and verify that the latest applicable quality update is installed rather than failed or pending.
- Compare the recorded edition/version with Microsoft’s current servicing dates.
- If a feature release is not offered, check Microsoft’s release-health page for controlled rollout status or a safeguard hold.
- If the release is out of support, begin the supported upgrade process instead of waiting for another security patch.
Keeping a simple note with the version, edition, latest KB number, and lifecycle end date makes it easier to spot a genuine support problem without confusing it with a temporary update delay. Record the date of your check as a convenience, but do not treat a page’s “last checked” timestamp as proof of lifecycle support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to involve an administrator
On an Enterprise or Education PC owned by a school or employer, Windows Update may be governed by deployment rings, deferrals, approval rules, or other policies. The local page can therefore show a deliberate delay rather than a fault. Give IT the edition, version, Windows Update status, latest KB number, and any error code. Administrators can compare those details with the organization’s configured servicing policy and Microsoft’s edition-specific lifecycle dates.
Contact the administrator promptly when a quality update repeatedly fails, the device reports that updates are controlled by policy, or the installed release is near or past its end date. Home users should use the same evidence when contacting Microsoft or the PC maker: edition, version, build, update status, Update history entry, and any error code.

What is the Windows 11 24H2 deadline for Home and Pro?
The listed end-of-updates date is October 13, 2026. After that date, 24H2 Home and Pro are no longer scheduled to receive the monthly security updates and protections tied to that lifecycle.
Is 24H2 Enterprise or Education already expired?
No. Microsoft lists October 12, 2027 as the end-of-updates date for 24H2 Enterprise and Education. Confirm the edition in Settings before deciding which date applies.
Why has my PC not been offered 26H2?
Microsoft is using a controlled rollout for eligible 24H2 and 25H2 PCs and may place safeguard holds where it detects compatibility issues. A missing offer does not by itself mean that monthly quality updates stopped.
Should an existing PC expect Windows 11 26H1?
No. Microsoft documents 26H1 for new devices with select new silicon, and it is not offered through Windows Update as an in-place upgrade to earlier Windows 11 PCs.
How long is 26H2 supported?
Microsoft lists 24 months for Home and Pro and 36 months for Enterprise and Education. Check the exact published end date for your edition and release rather than applying a general Windows 11 period.
What information should I send to IT about a failed update?
Send the edition, version, build, KB number, Windows Update status, Update history result, error text, and whether a restart is pending. Those details let the administrator compare the failure with the organization’s servicing policy.
Can I bypass a safeguard hold to install a feature update?
Do not bypass it with an unofficial method. A safeguard hold indicates a known compatibility concern; check Microsoft’s release-health information and wait for the hold to be resolved or follow an approved administrator-supported path.
Frequently Asked Questions
