The most reliable sign that a Valheim dedicated server is ready is the host-console message “Game server connected.” Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide explains: “When the Server program shows the message ‘Game server connected’ the Server is up and running, ready to accept connections.” You must then test the correct connection path for your server’s backend: a join code for an in-game or Crossplay session, or the server browser/public IP and forwarded ports for a Steam-backend server.

A server can be running while still being invisible, blocked by a firewall, restricted by a password or permission list, or unavailable to players on another platform. The checks below separate those conditions so you can identify the failure without guessing.

Open the window running the Valheim dedicated-server program and watch its startup output. Do not begin with the in-game browser: a listing problem cannot be diagnosed until the server itself has finished starting.

If that exact readiness message appears, the process has connected to the game service. It does not prove that every player can reach it. Visibility, port forwarding, firewall rules, backend selection, passwords and platform compatibility are separate checks.
If the message never appears
Keep the investigation on the host computer. Check the launch script and the paths it uses, read any startup error in the console, confirm that the machine has Internet access, and respond to Windows Firewall prompts. Iron Gate specifically recommends allowing the server application through Windows Firewall when Windows asks for permission. Until the process reaches Game server connected, changing a player’s join method or searching the browser is unlikely to help.
Leave the console running
A dedicated server is only available while its server process is running. Closing the console, signing out of the host in a way that stops the process, or shutting down the host takes the server offline even if its files and configuration are correct.
Determine which backend your server uses
Valheim has two dedicated-server networking modes. The launch option determines the mode and changes both the expected join method and the network work required on the host.

Iron Gate documents these options in its dedicated-server guide and its Crossplay FAQ. If you are unsure which mode is active, inspect the launch command for -crossplay; its presence means Crossplay, and its absence means the Steam backend.

Check an in-game hosted world or Crossplay server with a join code
A join code is the quickest test when the session is an in-game hosted world or a Crossplay-enabled dedicated server.

- Have the host start the world or dedicated server and wait for the host console to show Game server connected when using the standalone application.
- In Valheim, open the pause menu and copy the displayed join code.
- On the player’s machine, open Join Game, choose Add server, and paste the code.
- Attempt to connect with the same password the host configured, if one is required.
The official Crossplay FAQ describes join-code use and platform compatibility at valheim.com/support/crossplay-faq/. A successful join-code connection confirms that the session is online through the Crossplay path; it does not demonstrate that a Steam-only browser listing or manually forwarded port is working.
What a failed join-code test means
- The code is rejected immediately: obtain a fresh code from the current host session and verify that the host has not restarted the world since the code was copied.
- The server is found but entry is refused: check the password and the server’s permitted and banned lists.
- Players on another platform cannot join: confirm that the dedicated server was launched with
-crossplay. A Steam-backend server is not automatically a cross-platform server.
Check a Steam-backend dedicated server
For a server started without -crossplay, use the Steam networking path. The server should be visible in the browser when it is public, or players can connect directly with the host’s public IP address and port.
Verify the public setting
The launch option -public 1 makes the server visible in the browser. With -public 0, the server is deliberately hidden and must be joined through Join IP. A hidden server can therefore be online even though a browser search returns nothing.
Verify forwarding and firewall access
- On the host’s router, forward the Valheim server’s default range, UDP 2456–2457, to the local IP address of the computer running the server. Iron Gate states that the range must be reachable from the Internet for the Steam backend; use the port range configured in your launch settings if you changed it.
- Allow the dedicated-server application through the host operating system’s firewall. If Windows displayed a permission prompt during first launch, the application must be allowed on the network profile used by the host.
- Give players the public IP address, not the host’s private address such as a local 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x address, when they are connecting from outside your home network.
- Use the port expected by the server configuration in Join IP if the browser does not find the server.
Port forwarding is a requirement for the Steam backend’s Internet path. It is not a universal test for every Valheim server: Crossplay’s relay removes the need for external forwarding.

Check a Crossplay dedicated server
Crossplay must be enabled at startup by including -crossplay in the dedicated-server launch options. The Crossplay backend uses a relay, so players do not need the host to forward the default Steam port range for that relay connection.
- Stop the server process if it is running.
- Update the launch command to include
-crossplay, alongside the server’s other options. - Start the server again and wait for Game server connected in the console.
- Test with a new join code, the Crossplay server list, or the public IP-and-port method supported in the official documentation.

Xbox and other non-Steam players
Xbox players cannot run the standalone dedicated-server application, but they can join a dedicated server when Crossplay is enabled. If Steam players can connect while Xbox or Game Pass players cannot, first verify the -crossplay option and then test through a join code or Crossplay listing. Trying to join a Steam-only server from Xbox is expected to fail until the backend is changed.
Why an online server may not appear in the browser
“Online” and “visible in the browser” are different states. Work through these causes in order.

Check the launch command for -public 0. That setting intentionally removes the server from the browser. Change it to -public 1 and restart the server if you want a public listing. If you prefer a private listing, leave it hidden and give trusted players the IP-and-port details or join code appropriate to the backend.

The wrong backend is being tested
A Steam-only server will not provide Crossplay access simply because a player is searching from another platform. Conversely, a Crossplay server should be tested through its relay-supported methods rather than assuming Steam port forwarding is the deciding factor.
The Internet path is blocked
For Steam mode, inspect both router forwarding and the host firewall. Forward UDP 2456–2457 to the correct local machine, make sure the server process is allowed through the firewall, and confirm that the public address belongs to the network hosting the server. A correct console status with an unreachable public path points to this layer rather than to world files.
Access controls reject the player
A password can make a working server appear inaccessible. The files permittedlist.txt and bannedlist.txt can also allow or deny individual players. Check spelling, account identity and whether the player is on the permitted list when that restriction is enabled. Remove an unintended ban or correct the list, then have the player reconnect.
The listing has not refreshed
Restarting the server after changing -public, -crossplay or network settings is necessary because those options are read at startup. After the restart reaches Game server connected, repeat the test using the backend’s matching method instead of relying on an old browser result.
Use the symptom to choose the next check

Self-hosting versus managed hosting for availability checks
If you run the server yourself, you control the files and configuration but also own the network troubleshooting. A managed host may remove some of that work, but the exact features depend on the provider. The operational differences below are the ones to verify before choosing either approach.

A repeatable five-minute health check
Use this sequence whenever someone asks whether the server is online or reports “failed to connect.”

- Identify the backend: look for
-crossplayin the launch options. - Choose the matching test: use a join code for an in-game or Crossplay session; use the browser or public IP and port for Steam mode.
- Check visibility and network access: verify
-public 1for browser visibility, or deliberately use-public 0with Join IP; for Steam mode, verify UDP 2456–2457 forwarding and firewall permission. - Check admission rules and platform: confirm the password, permitted and banned lists, and that non-Steam players are connecting to a Crossplay-enabled server.
Record which step fails. That single distinction tells you whether to keep working on the host process, the network path, the listing setting or the player’s access and platform.
What “online” can and cannot prove
The console message proves that the dedicated-server process is up and connected to the game service. A successful join proves that at least one selected connection path works. Neither result proves universal reachability from every platform, a permanent browser listing, a particular latency, a player capacity or a backup policy. Those are separate properties that depend on the backend, network configuration, access controls and hosting arrangement.
