How to Check Whether Your TV Supports the Features PS5 Pro Uses

Find the TV’s exact model, verify each feature on the HDMI input you use, and confirm what PS5 Pro detects in Video Output settings.

Check your TV’s exact model and the specific HDMI input you plan to use, then confirm what the connected console detects at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Verify 4K at 120 Hz, VRR, HDR, and ALLM separately: an “HDMI 2.1” label alone does not establish that every feature works on every port.

Check your TV and PS5 Pro in this order

  1. Identify the complete TV model number. Look on the rear label or in the TV’s system information or settings menu. Record the full identifier, including any suffixes; models within the same product series can differ.
  2. Find the manufacturer’s manual or official specifications for that exact model. Check the capabilities of the individual HDMI input, not just the TV’s general feature list. Look for 4K input at 120 Hz, VRR, HDR, and ALLM as separate entries.
  3. Connect the PS5 Pro to a port that supports the features you want. The TV manual may identify which HDMI input is appropriate. Some sets also require you to enable a setting for the selected input.
  4. Update the TV firmware before diagnosing a missing feature. Firmware can affect whether a supported signal is recognized or available.
  5. On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review the information shown for the connected HDMI device, including resolution, VRR, and HDR.
  6. Check a game’s own support and mode. A TV can accept a signal without a particular game offering a mode that uses it. The game and its selected settings influence the output the console actually sends.

Use both kinds of evidence: the TV’s documentation establishes what the set and port are designed to accept, while the PS5’s Video Output screen shows information about the display it currently detects. If they disagree, first check the selected port, TV settings, firmware, and anything else between the console and television.

To make the check reliable, write down the model number and the HDMI input you are testing. Then compare the manual’s wording for that input with the console’s Video Output information. This avoids two common mix-ups: relying on a specification for a different TV in the same series, and assuming a capability documented for one HDMI input applies to every input.

What to look for in the TV specifications

Feature What to verify What it does—and does not—tell you
4K at 120 Hz The exact model accepts a 4K input at 120 Hz on the HDMI port you will use. It lets the display accept that signal. It does not mean every game runs at 120 frames per second; the game and its selected mode must support it.
VRR The manual lists variable refresh rate support for the relevant HDMI input. VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh rate with console output on compatible displays. Results can vary by TV and game.
HDR The TV’s official specifications identify HDR support; check any port-specific conditions in the manual. The console’s Video Output page also includes HDR information and HDR options. A specification alone does not say that a particular game uses HDR.
ALLM The manual explicitly lists Auto Low Latency Mode or ALLM for the port in use. ALLM can switch a compatible TV to a low-latency mode. Some TVs may describe or expose related settings as Game Mode, but check the manual rather than assuming.
8K Verify the game, TV, and console requirements separately, including the display’s 8K/60 Hz and DSC requirements where applicable. 8K is conditional, not a baseline requirement for using PS5 Pro. Sony says only select games support it.

Why “HDMI 2.1” is not a complete answer

HDMI version branding is not a reliable checklist for every feature. Sony specifically says that not all TVs with HDMI 2.1 support ALLM and advises checking the display’s instruction manual. A version label also does not tell you which inputs on a particular TV support a given signal. Confirm each feature and port in the model-specific documentation.

When a manual uses terms such as “4K 120,” “VRR,” or “ALLM,” note whether the support applies to all HDMI inputs or only named inputs. If the documentation is unclear, do not infer support from a series name or a general marketing summary; consult the manufacturer’s model-specific support information.

Think of “HDMI 2.1” as a prompt to investigate, not a result. You still need to answer four separate questions: Can the input accept the resolution and refresh rate you want? Does it support VRR? Does it pass HDR? Does it support ALLM? The answer can differ by feature, even on one TV. Sony’s support guidance makes the point explicitly: not every HDMI 2.1 TV has ALLM.

Does your TV support 4K at 120 Hz?

Search the manual or official specification for the exact model for 4K input at 120 Hz and confirm that it applies to the HDMI port connected to the PS5 Pro. A TV described as 120 Hz may still need to be checked for the resolution and input combination you intend to use; the key question is whether that input accepts 4K at 120 Hz.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then check the connected-device information in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Sony says the PS5 detects TV capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution. The Video Output page reports connected HDMI-device information, including resolution. Treat that as a check of the current connection, not a substitute for the TV’s specifications: an intermediate receiver, cable, port, or setting can limit the signal even if the television itself supports it.

PS5 Pro supports 60 Hz and 120 Hz displays, and Sony describes compatible games with output up to 120 frames per second. “Up to” matters: 120 fps is not promised in every game. The display must accept a 120 Hz signal, and the title and selected game mode must also support the higher rate.

So, if you are asking “Does my TV support 4K 120Hz?”, look for the full combination rather than either number in isolation. A 4K specification alone does not confirm 120 Hz input, and a 120 Hz claim alone does not confirm 4K at that refresh rate through the HDMI port you intend to use. The console’s detected resolution can help confirm the active connection, but the TV manual remains important for what the particular input is specified to accept.

How to know whether your TV supports VRR

Look for VRR in the exact TV model’s documentation, including any port restrictions. Connect the console to a supported input, then check the PS5’s connected-device information on the Video Output screen for VRR. Sony describes VRR as synchronizing a compatible display’s refresh rate with the console’s output and notes that results vary by TV and game.

Seeing VRR support in the TV manual establishes a capability, not that every game will use it or benefit in the same way. If the console does not report VRR for the connected display, check that the selected input supports the feature, that the TV’s relevant setting is enabled if required, and that the signal path is direct while you diagnose it.

If your question is “How do I know if my TV supports VRR?”, use the manual and the console together. The manual tells you whether the television and intended input list VRR support; Video Output tells you what the PS5 detects for the current connection. Neither step proves that a particular game has a VRR mode active. Game support and settings remain part of the final check.

How to check HDR and ALLM

HDR

Confirm HDR support in the TV specifications, then check the PS5’s Video Output page for the detected HDMI device’s HDR information and the available HDR options. Keep the three checks distinct: the TV’s capability, what the console detects over this connection, and whether the game uses HDR. Finding HDR in one place does not guarantee the other two.

ALLM and low-latency mode

Look for “ALLM” or “Auto Low Latency Mode” in the TV manual. Sony identifies ALLM as a feature for compatible TVs and says it may be called Game Mode in TV settings. Because TV terminology and controls vary, use the model’s manual to confirm how the feature is described and whether it applies to the HDMI input you selected.

Do not use HDMI 2.1 as proof of ALLM. Sony’s support guidance answers “No” to whether all HDMI 2.1 TVs have ALLM, and directs users to the display’s instruction manual. The cited PS5 Video Output information covers resolution, VRR, and HDR; use the TV documentation to verify ALLM rather than expecting that screen to confirm it.

These checks answer different questions. HDR is about the TV’s HDR capability and what the console detects for the connected device; ALLM is a low-latency behavior to verify in the TV’s documentation and settings. A TV might offer one without the other, so do not treat “HDR” or “Game Mode” as shorthand for the full set of features.

Which HDMI port should you use?

Use the input the TV manual identifies for the features you need. A television can have several HDMI inputs without every input supporting the same capabilities. If the manual labels inputs or describes a special setting for high-bandwidth features, follow those instructions for the port connected to the console.

For a clean diagnosis, connect the PS5 Pro directly to the TV rather than routing the signal through an audio receiver or another device. Once the direct connection works, reconnect other equipment one item at a time. That helps identify whether an intermediate device or a different connection path is limiting the detected signal.

If you are choosing between two existing TVs or HDMI ports, compare the exact combinations, not just the number of features in a TV’s marketing description:

  • Does the input accept the resolution and refresh rate you want, especially 4K at 120 Hz?
  • Does that same input support VRR and HDR?
  • Does the manual explicitly list ALLM or the applicable low-latency behavior?
  • Do settings, firmware, or another device in the signal path affect those capabilities?

For a quick comparison, make one row for each TV or port and one column for each feature: 4K at 120 Hz, VRR, HDR, and ALLM. Mark each entry as confirmed, not listed, or unclear based on the model-specific manual. Add a note for any setting that must be enabled and for any receiver or other device in the route. This makes trade-offs visible: one input may be suitable for the resolution and refresh rate you want while another lacks a feature you care about.

When comparing two TVs, prioritize the signal and features you actually want to use. If 4K/120 Hz is important, first establish that exact input combination. Then compare VRR, HDR, and ALLM independently. If a feature is not listed for one input, do not assume that another input or a shared TV-series specification resolves the uncertainty. Check the manual or the manufacturer’s official model support information.

What PS5 Pro’s features mean for your TV check

PSSR is not a TV input mode

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is PS5 Pro’s console-side upscaling technology. Sony promotes improved image clarity on a 4K TV, but PSSR is not a special HDMI mode that the television needs to advertise by that name. Check the TV’s supported resolution and input instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

120 Hz depends on the whole setup

A display and the relevant input must accept 120 Hz for a compatible game mode to send that signal. The game must also support the mode. A TV specification therefore tells you whether the display can accept the signal; it does not predict the frame rate a specific game will deliver.

8K is an additional, conditional case

Do not treat an 8K television as a prerequisite for PS5 Pro. Sony says only select games support 8K, and its PS5 video-output guidance specifies an 8K/60 Hz display with DSC. Sony also limits the Allow 8K Output setting to the CFI-7000 model group. Check the game, display requirements, and console model group together before expecting 8K output; an 8K label on the TV alone is not enough.

That makes 8K a separate compatibility check rather than a shortcut to assessing ordinary PS5 Pro use. First confirm the features you want—such as 4K input, 120 Hz, VRR, and HDR—on the port you will use. Only if you specifically want 8K should you also verify that the game supports it, that the display meets Sony’s stated 8K/60 Hz and DSC requirements, and that the console is in the CFI-7000 model group for the setting.

If 4K at 120 Hz is missing

Work through the connection before concluding that the TV cannot support the signal. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the TV’s 4K/120 Hz support, updating firmware, using the appropriate HDMI input, and reviewing PS5 output settings. It also recommends the included PS5 HDMI cable; Sony’s PlayStation FAQ discusses using an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable when needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the model and port. Recheck the manual for 4K at 120 Hz on the exact input in use. A different port on the same TV may have different capabilities.
  2. Update the TV firmware. Then check the TV’s input-specific settings; the manual may say that a setting must be changed to enable the relevant signal.
  3. Connect directly to the TV. Temporarily remove a receiver or other device from the signal path so you can determine whether it is affecting what the console detects.
  4. Check the cable. Try the HDMI cable included with the PS5. If it is missing, damaged, or the signal path remains suspect, use a rated Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. A cable cannot add 4K/120 Hz support to a TV or port that lacks it.
  5. Review PS5 video output settings. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and check the available resolution and video transfer-rate settings. Avoid assuming a displayed resolution proves every other feature is active; assess VRR, HDR, and ALLM separately.
  6. Recheck the game and mode. A game must support the output mode you expect. If the TV and connection can accept 120 Hz but a particular title does not offer a compatible mode, the display’s specification will not make that mode appear.

If the console still does not detect the expected capability after these checks, compare the TV manual’s port-specific requirements with the complete signal path and the PS5’s reported information. That narrows the issue to the display/input, settings, cable, an intermediate device, or game support instead of treating all compatibility as one HDMI-version question.

A cable is worth checking only as part of that diagnosis. Sony recommends trying the cable included with PS5; an optional rated Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is relevant if the included cable is missing or damaged, or if the existing path is suspect. Buying a new cable cannot add a feature that the TV or selected input does not support, and it should not be the first assumption when a port setting or intermediate device may be responsible.

Read the result as a set of separate answers

After checking the manual and the console, summarize the result in plain terms. For example: “This TV’s HDMI input is documented for 4K at 120 Hz; PS5 detects the expected resolution; the manual lists VRR and HDR; ALLM is not confirmed.” That is more useful than calling the TV simply compatible or incompatible, because it names which features are established and which still need checking.

If the manual lists a feature but the PS5 does not detect it, investigate the current connection: confirm the port, input setting, firmware, cable, and any receiver or device between the console and TV. If PS5 detects a capability, remember that the game and selected mode still determine whether the console actually uses it. A TV’s specification, the console’s detected-device report, and a game’s supported modes are three different parts of the answer.

Does my TV support 4K 120Hz?

Check the manual for your exact TV model and confirm that the specific HDMI input accepts a 4K signal at 120 Hz. A general 120 Hz claim or 4K label alone does not confirm that combination. Then check the connected-device information in PS5 Video Output settings; the game must also support a mode that uses 120 Hz.

How do I know if my TV supports VRR?

Look for VRR in the TV’s model-specific manual, including any HDMI input restrictions. Connect the console to a supported input and check the PS5 Video Output screen for VRR information. A compatible game and its settings also affect whether VRR is used.

Which HDMI port should I use for PS5 Pro?

Use the port the TV’s manual identifies for the features you want, especially 4K at 120 Hz and VRR. Some TVs do not support every feature on every input, and some require an input setting to be enabled. For troubleshooting, connect the console directly to the TV before adding a receiver or other device back into the signal path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does HDMI 2.1 mean my TV has ALLM?

No. Sony’s PS5 support guidance says not all TVs with HDMI 2.1 support ALLM. Check the exact TV manual for ALLM or Auto Low Latency Mode and confirm any port-specific conditions.

Is an 8K TV required for PS5 Pro?

No. 8K is conditional, and Sony says only select games support it. Sony’s video-output guidance specifies an 8K/60 Hz display with DSC, and the Allow 8K Output setting is limited to the CFI-7000 model group. Verify the game, display, and console requirements rather than treating an 8K TV as a general requirement.

The Bottom Line

Check the exact TV model and HDMI input, confirm 4K at 120 Hz, VRR, HDR, and ALLM individually in the manual, then compare those specifications with what PS5 Pro reports at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The game, selected mode, TV settings, firmware, cable, and any device in the signal path can affect what works. HDMI 2.1 alone is not proof of ALLM—or of every feature on every port.
