Fully charge your Nintendo Switch 2 and check how long it runs during normal handheld play. Nintendo estimates about 2 to 6.5 hours per charge, depending on the software and features in use. If it charges fully but runs for less than Nintendo’s stated range, Nintendo says it needs repair. The percentage shown on screen is a charge-level indicator, not a battery-health test.
How to check your Switch 2 battery runtime
- Charge the console fully. Start with a full charge so you can compare a complete charge cycle with Nintendo’s estimate.
- Use it normally in handheld mode. Note the approximate time until the console needs charging. This is a practical check, not a laboratory measurement of battery capacity.
- Account for what you are doing. Nintendo’s estimate is about 2 to 6.5 hours, and runtime varies with the software and functions used. Handheld Mode Boost, for example, can increase power consumption. Nintendo does not give one expected runtime for every game or setup. Nintendo Support’s runtime guidance provides the estimate and explains when to seek repair.
What your result means
It runs within Nintendo’s approximate range
A runtime within the 2-to-6.5-hour range does not, by itself, show that the battery needs replacing. The estimate is broad and depends on use; Nintendo does not publish a percentage-of-original-capacity threshold for replacement.

It runs for less than the range after a full charge
Nintendo says a console that charges fully but does not last as long as the listed times will need repair. Arrange service through Nintendo for your region rather than opening the console or attempting a battery replacement.

The on-screen percentage reports remaining charge; it does not measure battery health. If the percentage appears stuck or inaccurate while the console still runs for several hours, treat that as a charge-indicator issue rather than proof that the battery has failed. Nintendo addresses charge-indicator troubleshooting separately in its battery runtime support guidance.

What to do if the battery appears swollen
Contact Nintendo service if the console or controller appears to have a swollen battery. Nintendo says swelling can occur as a battery ages or after repeated charging, and may be accompanied by shorter runtime. An unusual-looking case alone does not prove the battery is swollen, but do not disassemble the device to investigate or replace the battery yourself. Nintendo’s battery replacement guidance and safety information direct customers to service and advise against self-repair.
Can you replace a Switch 2 battery yourself?
No. Nintendo says customers cannot replace the batteries in the Switch 2 console or its controllers; battery replacement is handled as a Nintendo service repair. Do not use a DIY battery kit or open the console. Repair cost, eligibility and turnaround depend on region and are not established by Nintendo’s general runtime guidance. For disposal, follow local rules for products with embedded batteries rather than disassembling the device.

How to check the displayed charge percentage
The battery icon shows the remaining charge, and the console can display that level as a percentage. This can help you monitor charge during the runtime check, but it cannot tell you the battery’s condition or capacity. If the display itself seems inaccurate, use Nintendo’s charge-indicator troubleshooting rather than interpreting the percentage as a health score.
