Check the SSD’s current negotiated PCIe link speed and width, not just the drive’s advertised capability. A typical M.2 NVMe drive running on a full PCIe 5.0 x4 link reports 32.0 GT/s, x4. A lower value means the current link is not Gen5 x4; it does not, by itself, identify the cause.
What to check: link speed and link width
PCIe speed and width are separate readings. NVM Express Management Interface Specification Revision 2.0 defines a “PCIe Current Link Speed” field for the negotiated speed and a separate “PCIe Negotiated Link Width” field. It says the speed field indicates “the port’s PCIe negotiated link speed.” The specification distinguishes these current values from the link speeds and width a device supports. | Current reading | What it means |
|---|---|
| 32.0 GT/s, x4 | Gen5 signaling with four negotiated lanes—the expected full link for a typical four-lane M.2 NVMe SSD. |
| 32.0 GT/s, x2 | Gen5 signaling, but only two lanes are negotiated. |
| 16.0 GT/s, x4 | Four lanes are negotiated at Gen4 signaling, not Gen5. |
A device’s capability page may say it supports Gen5 without showing that it is currently connected at Gen5. Select the SSD’s NVMe controller or PCIe endpoint in the diagnostic tool; a computer also has PCIe links for its graphics card, network devices and chipset.

Windows
- Open a PCIe-aware hardware information utility or your motherboard’s firmware diagnostics.
- Select the NVMe controller or SSD, rather than another PCIe device.
- Find the current or negotiated link speed and link width. A full Gen5 x4 link should show 32.0 GT/s and x4.
- Compare those readings with the SSD’s maximum capability and the specification for the exact M.2 socket you are using in the motherboard manual.
Labels and reporting vary with the utility, storage controller, driver and software version, so no single Windows command or screen is guaranteed to report the link on every PC.

Linux
Use a PCIe or NVMe diagnostic that exposes the SSD endpoint’s current link status. Check its current speed and width, and verify that the selected endpoint belongs to the SSD rather than another device. The values have the same meaning: 32.0 GT/s is Gen5 signaling, while x4 means four lanes. Reporting and available commands vary by system and distribution, so confirm the endpoint and fields rather than assuming one command works everywhere.
Firmware and motherboard manual
If your firmware interface shows current M.2 link information, use it as a second reading. Then look up the exact socket number in the motherboard manual. Socket capability and lane allocation vary by board: Gen5 may be available only on a particular CPU-connected M.2 socket, while another socket may be Gen4 or share lanes with another device.

ASUS’s PCIe troubleshooting guidance illustrates how slot capability, lane sharing, BIOS generation settings and seating can affect an observed link mode. Its worked example concerns a graphics card, so use it only for general platform troubleshooting principles; the motherboard manual is the authority for the SSD socket. ASUS PCIe troubleshooting guidance
If the SSD is not showing Gen5 x4
- Verify the SSD model. Check its specifications to confirm it is a PCIe Gen5 NVMe drive; an M.2 connector alone does not establish its PCIe generation.
- Verify the socket. Find the exact populated M.2 socket in the motherboard manual and check its generation and lane width. Do not infer M.2 support from the board’s graphics-card slot specification.
- Check lane sharing. Review the board’s lane-allocation table and note whether another installed device affects the socket or its available lanes.
- Review firmware settings. Check whether the socket’s PCIe speed is set to Auto or a lower generation. The setting name and menu location depend on the board; ASUS advises checking the slot link-speed setting when a link operates below expectations.
- Check installation. If you are comfortable doing so, shut the system down and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to verify that the SSD is seated correctly and the socket is undamaged.
- Check vendor updates. Consult the motherboard and SSD makers’ support pages for relevant BIOS, storage-driver and SSD-firmware updates. SanDisk lists outdated or incompatible host BIOS, NVMe drivers and firmware among possible causes of low performance or drive non-detection. SanDisk SN8100 support
- Recheck link status. After any change, read the negotiated speed and width again. Use a benchmark separately to assess performance, not to determine PCIe generation.
Why a benchmark cannot confirm the link generation
A sequential read or write result can provide performance context, but it does not directly report the negotiated PCIe link. Results depend on the exact SSD model and capacity, host configuration, workload, thermal conditions and test method. Do not treat any one benchmark number as a universal Gen5 threshold.

A Gen5 SSD can run at a lower link capability in a Gen4 socket. Before choosing an upgrade, verify the exact drive and motherboard socket specifications. Cooling requirements also depend on the drive and host: SanDisk notes that some early Gen5 drives required active or passive cooling because of heat, but that does not make a separate heatsink necessary for every SSD. Follow the drive and motherboard installation guidance for the specific configuration.

Do not enable write caching as a way to make a link Gen5; it does not establish PCIe generation. SanDisk warns that a power interruption while cached writes are pending can result in data loss.
