To confirm whether your polling place is open or has moved, check the official polling-place lookup for your current home address and the specific upcoming election, then verify any conflicting or unclear information with your state or local election office. Polling-place assignments and hours vary by jurisdiction and election, so an old address or a general map listing is not proof that a site is open for your election.
Find the official election office for your address
In the United States, election administration is decentralized. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) says that “the best source of practical registration and voting information is your local elections office” in its Voter FAQs.

Start with the EAC’s state and territory voting-information page, or use USAGov’s directory of state and local election offices. Follow the official link for the jurisdiction that administers elections for your address. Depending on where you live, that may be a state, county, city, or another local office. USAGov’s Find your polling place page, last updated February 23, 2026, also directs voters to check their registration as a way to find their polling place.
Check the location and hours for the specific election
- Use your current residential address. Enter it in the official polling-place or voter-registration lookup. Check that the address shown is yours and that you selected the correct election.
- Read the election-specific result. Confirm the polling-place address and voting hours listed for that election. A registration card, search result, or location from a previous election may be out of date.
- Check again close to Election Day. Polling places can change between elections. Use the current election’s official lookup or notice rather than assuming a location used before is still assigned to you.
- Contact the responsible election office if the information is unclear. Use the official directory to find its contact details. Ask for the current location, hours, and instructions for your particular election.
What to do if a polling place appears closed or a move notice conflicts
Do not rely on a conflicting listing, an old notice, or an unverified map result to decide where to vote. Contact the election office responsible for your address and ask which location and hours apply to your election. If a site appears inaccessible or you arrive to find it unavailable, contact that office for current instructions.

Federal guidance points voters to state and local election authorities but does not establish one nationwide emergency closure procedure or alert service. The local election office is the appropriate place to confirm what has happened and what options apply in your jurisdiction.

Not necessarily. Election Management Guidelines from the EAC distinguish precinct-specific polling places, consolidated sites serving multiple precincts, and jurisdiction-wide vote centers. Whether a site accepts you depends on the local system and rules; an assigned precinct location is not automatically interchangeable with a vote center.

| Location model | Who may vote there | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Precinct-specific polling place | Voters assigned to that location; another site may not accept your ballot. | That the official lookup assigns your address to this site for the specific election. |
| Consolidated precinct location | Voters from the precincts served by that location. | That your precinct is among those served for the election. |
| Jurisdiction-wide vote center | Voters eligible to use the centers under local rules; the jurisdiction determines eligibility. | That the center is authorized for your election and your voter eligibility. |
The EAC describes these models in its Election Management Guidelines, Chapter 14: Voting Location Management. State law and local administration determine which model applies, so confirm before traveling to a location other than the one shown for you.

Which information should you trust?
- Best for your assignment: the official lookup or direct confirmation from the election office responsible for your address and election.
- Not conclusive by itself: an address from a past election, an old voter card, a general web search, or a map listing that does not identify the election and its official source.
- When sources disagree: contact the responsible election office and ask for the current location, hours, and instructions for the specific election.
