There is no universal percentage-per-hour test for a phone battery. Compare your phone’s battery use with its own recent pattern, then check which apps or activities changed. If the drain persists, use the phone’s battery-health or diagnostic tools to see whether the battery may need service.
1. Compare battery use with your normal pattern
Start with the built-in Battery screen rather than judging by a fixed drain rate. A day with navigation, streaming, games, high brightness, or weak cellular coverage can use much more power than a day of light use.

On iPhone
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review Daily Usage and compare today with the previous seven days. Apple’s current Daily Usage chart requires iOS 26 or later; labels and features may differ on older software.
- Tap View All Battery Usage for day-by-day detail, then review App and System Activity Usage. The list shows each app’s share of battery use and its on-screen or background activity.
A high percentage for one app is a clue, not proof that the app is faulty. Consider whether you used it heavily, or whether it was active in the background for directions, music playback, photo syncing, or mail fetching. Low cellular coverage and frequent notifications can also contribute.

On Android
Open Settings > Battery and inspect battery use. The exact menu names and available features vary by manufacturer and Android version. Compare the apps and activities listed with what you were doing and with your usual routine; Android’s general Battery screen may not offer the same seven-day comparison as iPhone’s Daily Usage view.

2. Look for common causes of a sudden change
- Screen use: Long screen-on periods and high brightness can increase consumption.
- Power-intensive tasks: Navigation, streaming, gaming, and tethering can use more power than ordinary standby.
- Signal conditions: Poor cellular coverage can contribute to drain as the phone works to maintain a connection. If safe and practical, compare a similar period on a stronger signal or Wi-Fi.
- Background activity: Check whether an app is syncing, using location, or otherwise active when you are not using it.
- Heat: Android Help notes, “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Avoid leaving a hot phone in direct sun or in another hot place.
Change only the setting relevant to the clue you found. For example, restrict background use for an app that shows unexpectedly high background activity, or lower brightness if the screen is the main contributor. Do not disable location or background activity across the board if you rely on those features.
3. Account for updates, setup, or a reset
Battery use can be temporarily higher after system work. Apple advises: “If you notice that your battery life has decreased after updating your device, wait a few days and then check again.” On iPhone, look for an Ongoing iOS Update insight if it appears.
Google says a Pixel may take a few days to settle after a software update, and optimization after setting up a new device or factory reset may take a few weeks. If the phone is still settling, allow that work to finish before treating a short-term change as evidence of battery failure.

4. Check battery health or run diagnostics
iPhone battery health
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health on iPhone 15 and later, or Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging on iPhone 14 and earlier. If the screen shows Service, consider battery service through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Pixel diagnostics
On Pixel 6 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly. On the Battery usage screen, review which apps are using power. Google recommends leaving app battery use set to Optimized in general; for a listed app, you can adjust background use if its activity is contributing to the problem.
Force-stopping or uninstalling an app is a later troubleshooting step, not the first response to a high percentage. Google warns that force-stopping essential apps or services can impair phone operation.

5. Test one change at a time
To find a likely cause rather than guessing, note what the Battery screen shows and when the drain happens. Make one relevant change, then compare battery use over a similar period and under similar conditions. This is a practical way to isolate a cause, not a guaranteed manufacturer diagnostic test.

- Record the apps or activity with high use, including whether the use was on-screen or in the background.
- Choose one matching adjustment, such as restricting a high-use app’s background activity, reducing brightness, or using Wi-Fi where cellular coverage is poor.
- Recheck the Battery screen after comparable use. If the pattern does not improve, restore the setting if needed and investigate another clue.
Android Battery Saver can limit background activity, and some connections, features, or apps may be delayed while it is on. Use it with that trade-off in mind rather than treating it as a diagnosis.
6. When to contact support
If drain remains unusual after the relevant app or setting checks, the update or setup settling period, and a restart, install available system and app updates and contact the phone’s manufacturer or carrier. Follow an on-device service recommendation rather than relying on an app percentage alone.
A factory reset is an advanced last step, not a routine battery check. Google warns that it removes phone data and apps; back up the phone before considering it.
