Start a plan’s Bring My Phone flow, choose Need help deciding?, enter the IMEI, and continue. The result identifies whether that specific handset is supported and whether Red Pocket can activate it with a physical SIM, an eSIM, or both.
Do not stop at the checker, however. A successful result still needs to be matched with an unlocked phone, VoLTE support, a clean IMEI, the right network for your address, and the SIM type supported by your exact model and regional variant.

What Red Pocket compatibility actually means
Compatibility is a device-level and network-level decision. A phone family, carrier logo, SIM tray, or previous service history cannot establish eligibility by itself. Red Pocket evaluates the IMEI—the unique identifier for the handset you intend to activate—against the network option you select.
Red Pocket’s general network descriptions associate three labels with underlying networks:

| Red Pocket label | Associated network | What still has to be verified |
|---|---|---|
| GSMA | AT&T-compatible network | The exact model and IMEI must pass Red Pocket’s checker; local coverage must also work for your address. |
| GSMT | T-Mobile-compatible network | The exact model and IMEI must pass the checker. Red Pocket’s GSMT guidance specifically says Sprint phones are unsupported, so check the current result rather than relying on a former carrier. |
| CDMA | Verizon-compatible network | Some older Verizon models are CDMA-only. A Verizon origin does not guarantee that a particular model can be activated. |
These associations are useful when comparing network choices, but they are not blanket promises. Two phones sold under the same retail name can have different radios, software, bands, or carrier restrictions. Always use the IMEI for the handset you will actually activate.
Find the exact model and its IMEI
Have the phone in hand before checking compatibility. If you are buying used, obtain the IMEI of the specific unit—not a stock number copied from a listing for another phone. Dual-SIM phones may display more than one IMEI; use the identifier for the SIM or eSIM line you plan to activate, and keep the other one available if Red Pocket asks for it.
On an iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Scroll to IMEI (and, where shown, the IMEI associated with the intended line).
Red Pocket’s checkout instructions use this path. Apple can change menu labels in later iOS releases, so the About screen is the authoritative place to copy the number.
On an Android phone
- Open Settings.
- Go to About, About phone, or About device.
- Open the status or identity section and copy the IMEI.
Android menu names vary by manufacturer and software version. If you cannot locate the number, dial *#06# in the phone app; compatible handsets display the IMEI on screen. Compare that number with the label on the box or SIM tray only as a second check, because a mismatch can indicate that you have the wrong handset record.
Run Red Pocket’s official IMEI checker
Red Pocket places the general device check inside the plan-selection flow rather than presenting a carrier-family list that you can use as a substitute. Follow these steps:
- Open Red Pocket’s plans page and select the plan you are considering.
- Choose Bring My Phone when asked how you will get service.
- Select Need help deciding? to open the device compatibility check.
- Enter the phone’s IMEI exactly as displayed. Remove spaces or punctuation if the form does not accept them.
- Continue and read the result for the selected network, device status, and available SIM type.
The checker’s result applies to the submitted IMEI, not to every phone with the same model name. Save a screenshot or note the result while you are comparing plans, particularly if you are checking more than one network option.

If the form reports a validation problem
A validation failure can mean that the handset is incompatible or restricted, but Red Pocket’s checkout guidance does not assign one universal cause to every failure. First re-enter the IMEI from the phone’s About screen or the *#06# display and confirm that you selected the correct network. If the number still cannot be validated, contact Red Pocket before purchasing or porting a line and provide the exact model, IMEI, and displayed message.

Compare the network choices for your location
Use two separate tests: the phone must be eligible for the network, and that network must cover the places where you will use it. Red Pocket directs customers to compare coverage by location and then check device compatibility; passing one test does not make the other unnecessary.
Check coverage at the actual address
- Identify the home, workplace, school, or travel area where reliable service matters most.
- Open Red Pocket’s coverage map and search the address or surrounding ZIP code.
- Repeat the check for each network label that the phone’s IMEI result permits.
- Look for the type of service shown in the area and consider indoor coverage, terrain, buildings, and travel routes rather than judging from a citywide color alone.
Coverage maps are planning tools, not a promise of signal inside every building. If your priority is a particular location, select the network whose map and real-world conditions best fit that location, then use the IMEI result to confirm the phone can join it.
Use the IMEI result to settle model questions
When a phone was sold by a major carrier, its origin can suggest which network it may have used, but it does not replace the model-specific check. Red Pocket notes that some older devices are CDMA-only and that exact model matters. A phone that worked on Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, or another carrier may still be restricted, lack required LTE voice support, or be excluded on the Red Pocket network you selected.
Verify the phone’s basic eligibility
Before ordering a SIM or starting activation, check the conditions Red Pocket identifies in its setup and network guidance.

The phone must not be tied to another carrier’s activation policy. Red Pocket’s official checkout page states: “Your device must be fully unlocked to activate with RedPocket.” An unlocked SIM slot alone is not proof of an unlocked account status. Check the original carrier’s device settings or account portal, or ask that carrier to confirm the unlock before you pay for service.

- What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
- Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
- How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
- The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
- Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs
Locked or branded devices can be excluded even when their hardware appears similar to an eligible retail model. Carrier-financed phones with an unpaid balance may also remain restricted until the account is resolved.
Confirm VoLTE support
Red Pocket’s setup guidance calls for a VoLTE-capable phone. VoLTE (Voice over LTE) carries ordinary calls over the LTE network; a phone that depends on an older voice technology may register for data but fail voice activation or calling. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact regional model and look for a VoLTE or LTE calling setting in the mobile-network menu. The IMEI result remains the final eligibility decision.
Make sure the IMEI is clean
A clean IMEI has not been reported as lost, stolen, or involved in fraud and is not blocked by an unresolved carrier or account issue. Red Pocket’s network information lists exclusions that can include lost or stolen reports, fraud flags, certain branded or locked devices, carrier-contract restrictions, and unpaid accounts. If a used phone produces an unexpected rejection, ask the seller or former carrier to resolve the status; do not assume a factory reset removes a network block.
Understand physical SIM and eSIM results
The compatibility checker can tell you whether Red Pocket offers a physical SIM, an eSIM, or a choice for the submitted phone. Follow that result for the exact handset rather than relying on a model family shown in a checkout example.
| Result or situation | What to do | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Physical SIM available | Order or use the physical SIM specified during checkout, then insert it after the phone is unlocked and ready for activation. | A SIM tray does not prove that the phone is compatible with a particular Red Pocket network. |
| eSIM available | Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi during activation and follow the current on-screen eSIM installation steps. | Eligibility is tied to the exact model and variant; examples in checkout are not an exhaustive list. |
| Both options available | Choose based on whether you need a removable card, a second line, or faster digital delivery. | Each line or IMEI on a dual-SIM phone may be handled separately. |
| Neither option offered or validation fails | Recheck the IMEI and model, then contact Red Pocket before buying. | The checkout message does not identify every possible restriction. |
Special case: iPhone 14 and newer
Red Pocket’s help guidance describes iPhone 14 and later as eSIM-only. A SIM-ejector pin or paper clip cannot create a physical-SIM option on those models. Verify the exact regional variant and wait for the checker to confirm eSIM eligibility before activating.
Do not treat an eSIM example list as a guarantee
Red Pocket’s checkout may show supported phone families as examples of eSIM-capable devices. Those examples are illustrative, not a complete compatibility catalogue. A regional variant, refurbished unit, or carrier edition can produce a different IMEI result even when its marketing name matches an example.

What to do when a phone is rejected
The IMEI was entered incorrectly
Copy the number again from Settings or *#06#. Do not substitute an order number, serial number, or the IMEI printed for a different SIM slot. If the phone has two IMEIs, test the one tied to the line you intend to use.

The phone is locked
Contact the former carrier and ask for an official unlock. A factory reset, new SIM, or unlocked-looking settings screen does not override a carrier lock. Re-run Red Pocket’s check only after the carrier confirms the change.
The phone is blocked or tied to an unpaid account
Ask the seller or original carrier to clear a lost, stolen, fraud, financing, or account-balance flag. Keep written proof of the resolution. Red Pocket cannot activate a handset that remains restricted in the carrier’s systems.
The model is older or was made for a different network
Check the complete model number and regional suffix, not just the retail name. Older Verizon devices may be CDMA-only, and a former Sprint phone is identified as unsupported in Red Pocket’s GSMT help article. Because network policies can change, use the live checker or ask Red Pocket support about the exact IMEI before making a purchase.
The checker still cannot validate it
Record the error, model number, IMEI, and network you selected. Red Pocket support can distinguish a data-entry problem from a restricted or unsupported device. Do not proceed on the assumption that a phone will work simply because it is unlocked or came from a compatible carrier.

- The IMEI result is for the handset you will activate.
- The result is tied to the Red Pocket network that covers your important addresses.
- The phone is fully unlocked.
- VoLTE is supported on the exact regional model.
- The IMEI is not reported lost, stolen, fraudulent, or otherwise restricted.
- You know whether activation requires a physical SIM or eSIM.
- Your phone is backed up and connected to Wi-Fi if you will install an eSIM.
- You have kept the old service active until the new activation and number transfer are complete.
If you choose a physical SIM, a SIM-ejector tool is optional; Red Pocket’s instructions also allow a straightened paper clip. Neither tool tests compatibility, unlock status, coverage, or IMEI eligibility.
How to decide between two eligible network options
When the checker approves more than one option, use this order of priorities:
- Coverage at your real addresses: choose the network with the strongest practical service where you live and work.
- Exact IMEI result: confirm that the same phone and SIM method are approved on that network.
- SIM preference: select eSIM for a digital installation when offered, or physical SIM if you need a removable card or the phone does not support eSIM.
- Network-specific needs: consider calling reliability, travel routes, hotspot or roaming requirements, and any feature Red Pocket lists for that network.
This process prevents a common mistake: selecting a network because its parent carrier is familiar, then discovering that the particular phone variant or address does not qualify.
When to contact Red Pocket before purchasing
Ask support for a definitive review when the handset is an older model, a carrier-branded edition, a refurbished or imported unit, a dual-SIM phone with multiple IMEIs, or a device that the checker cannot validate. Include the exact model number, IMEI, selected network, and the full on-screen result. Support can clarify an ambiguous result, but no general carrier association can substitute for the IMEI decision.
Red Pocket does not publish a universal compatibility percentage or a complete list that covers every model and regional variant. The official checker is therefore the appropriate authority for your individual phone, while the coverage map answers the separate question of whether service is practical where you will use it.
