To check VoLTE, confirm that your carrier supports your exact phone model on your line, look for a VoLTE or HD Voice setting, then place a test call. LTE data support alone does not prove that voice calls will use LTE. If the setting is missing or calls do not stay on LTE, ask your carrier to check the handset, software, plan, line provisioning, and SIM before replacing anything.
What determines whether VoLTE will work?
VoLTE means voice over LTE: calls travel over the LTE network rather than falling back to another voice network. Support depends on more than the phone’s ability to use LTE data. The handset’s precise model and software, the carrier’s network, the subscriber’s plan or line provisioning, and the SIM may all matter. Sony notes that some operators require operator-branded phones or operator-customized software for VoLTE (Sony support).

Carrier compatibility information is specific to the carrier and market and can change. For example, Jio and Airtel publish India-specific guidance, while Videotron’s instructions apply to its Canadian service. Use your own carrier’s current compatibility list or checker rather than treating another carrier’s supported-device list, menu, or SIM requirement as universal.

Check your exact phone model and carrier
- Identify the phone precisely. Find the model number and software version in the phone’s settings or on its device information screen. A broad product-family name may include regional or carrier variants with different support.
- Check the carrier’s official VoLTE device list or IMEI checker. If the carrier offers one, use it for the SIM or line you intend to use. Airtel, for example, provides a compatible-handset list in its VoLTE FAQs.
- Ask the carrier if the result is unclear. Give support the exact model, software version, and relevant line or plan details. Ask whether that model is accepted for VoLTE on the carrier’s network and whether your subscription and SIM are provisioned for it. Sony likewise advises checking the device, software, subscription, and SIM with the operator (Sony support).
Find and enable the VoLTE setting
Open the phone’s Cellular, Mobile Data, or Mobile Network settings and look for a label such as VoLTE, LTE voice, HD Voice, or Voice & Data. The exact label and path depend on the phone, operating system, carrier, and region; a setting shown in one carrier’s instructions may not appear on another device. Jio publishes an example settings guide for its service (Jio VoLTE settings FAQ).

If the option is present, enable it, install available operating-system or carrier-settings updates, and restart the phone. On many devices VoLTE is enabled by default, so the absence of a visible switch does not by itself mean the phone is incompatible. Videotron’s guidance also recommends checking updates and restarting, and notes that its service may require a VoLTE-capable SIM (Videotron VoLTE guide).

- Make sure the phone is in LTE coverage and that VoLTE is enabled if there is a switch.
- Place a call and observe the network indicator during the call. LTE remaining visible or a VoLTE, HD, or similar symbol can be a useful clue.
- Interpret the indicator in the context of your carrier and phone. Jio lists VoLTE, HD, or an arrow symbol for its network; Airtel describes a 4G/HD or VoLTE indicator. These are carrier-specific examples, not universal proof (Jio indicator FAQ; Airtel VoLTE FAQs).
If the call falls back from LTE, fails, or shows no clear indicator, ask the carrier to confirm whether VoLTE is active on your line. A single icon or call result may not settle the question because indicators and network behavior vary.

If VoLTE is missing or does not work
- Update and restart: install available phone software and carrier-settings updates, then restart and test again.
- Have the carrier check the line: ask support to verify the exact model and software, plan eligibility, line provisioning, and SIM. Ask specifically whether a replacement SIM is required for that carrier’s service.
- Do not infer incompatibility from a missing toggle: the option can be hidden, enabled by default, or controlled by carrier software or settings.
- Replace the phone only after confirmation: if the carrier confirms the handset is unsupported, compare a compatible model for that carrier with other available remedies. If it identifies a provisioning or SIM issue instead, address that first. Videotron directs customers to its support when compatibility and updates do not resolve activation (Videotron VoLTE guide).
