What’s actually slowing this PC down?

On Windows 11, check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > USB > USB4 Hubs and Devices for a detected USB4 host router, then verify the specific USB-C port in your PC maker’s specifications. To confirm PCIe 5.0, look up the exact expansion slot or M.2 connector in your PC or motherboard manual. A USB-C connector or a platform’s chipset name alone does not prove either capability.
Check for USB4 in Windows 11
- Open Settings: Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > USB > USB4 Hubs and Devices.
- Interpret the page: Microsoft says this page is enabled when Windows detects a USB4 host router. If it appears, it can also show connected USB4 hubs and devices and their capabilities. See Microsoft’s USB4 settings enablement documentation.
- If it is missing, check Device Manager: Open Device Manager, choose View > Devices by connection, and look for a USB4 Host Router. Microsoft’s USB4 connection-manager documentation describes the host router and its driver.
- Confirm the physical port: Look up the exact PC model’s port specifications or manual. The Windows listing is evidence of host-level USB4 hardware enumeration; it does not identify which physical USB-C ports support USB4.
Do not treat a missing Settings page as conclusive on its own. Microsoft notes that a host router dynamically enumerated only when a USB4 device is attached can affect whether the page is visible. Check the PC maker’s specifications as well.

Verify a particular USB-C port
USB-C describes a connector shape, not a guaranteed data standard. A USB-C port may not support USB4, and a USB4 device connected to a port without USB4 support may have limited functionality. Check the manufacturer’s port-by-port specifications rather than inferring capability from the connector or from a nearby symbol. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance covers these capability differences.

A USB4 connection depends on the capabilities of the host, port, connected device, and cable. USB-IF explains that USB4 supports earlier USB versions and that a connection scales to the best mutual capability of the devices; a compatible USB4 cable is also required for USB4 operation. See the USB-IF USB4 overview. A successful connection therefore does not, by itself, establish that it is operating as USB4.

Check PCIe 5.0 for the exact slot
- Identify the hardware: For a laptop or prebuilt desktop, record the exact PC model. For a custom desktop, record the motherboard and processor models.
- Open the PC or motherboard specifications and manual: Find the particular expansion slot or M.2 connector you intend to use, and check its stated PCIe generation and lane allocation.
- Read configuration notes: Check whether the slot’s generation or available lanes depend on the processor, another occupied slot, or a particular motherboard configuration. Do not assume every connector has the same capability.
PCIe 5.0 is specific to the platform and the individual slot; a processor or chipset supporting a generation does not prove that every slot or M.2 connector implements it. For example, AMD’s AM5 chipset information describes platform features while directing readers to the manufacturer for specific details. The relevant PC or motherboard manual is decisive for the connector you plan to use.
Keep USB4 PCIe tunneling separate from PCIe 5.0 slots
USB4 can tunnel PCI Express over a USB4 connection, but that is not the same thing as an internal motherboard expansion slot or M.2 connector supporting PCIe 5.0. Microsoft’s USB4 host-router PCIe support validation guidance concerns PCIe tunneling through USB4. Microsoft also notes that platform policy or user settings can disable PCIe tunneling in some implementations. Neither a USB4 host-router listing nor PCIe tunneling establishes the generation of an internal slot.

When comparing two PCs or motherboards
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| USB4 host support | Whether Windows detects a USB4 host router; check the Settings page and Device Manager. |
| Physical USB-C ports | Which individual ports the manufacturer explicitly specifies as USB4 and their stated capabilities. |
| Platform | The exact processor and motherboard combination, not just the chipset family. |
| PCIe connectors | The generation and lane allocation of the particular expansion slot or M.2 connector. |
| Configuration conditions | Any documented lane-sharing, firmware, or other configuration requirements. |
USB-C connector count and chipset branding are not reliable substitutes for these checks.
