To find out whether your PC can run an older sci-fi game, compare your computer with the requirements for the exact edition you plan to play, then check Windows compatibility separately. A match with the minimum specs is only a starting point: it does not guarantee the game will launch smoothly or meet a particular frame rate.
Can my PC run this game? Start with the exact edition
Look up the game’s current system requirements on its publisher’s site or the storefront where you plan to get it. Confirm that the listing matches the exact title and edition: an original release, remaster, or later updated build may have different requirements or compatibility notes. If the storefront page is incomplete, check the publisher’s support page and the game’s official manual.

Steam Support advises checking hardware requirements as well as compatible operating systems, including whether a game requires 64-bit Windows. Steam’s platform compatibility guidance is a useful reminder that an operating-system match alone does not establish that a PC can run a game.
How do I check if my PC can run a game?
Find your PC’s specifications
In Windows, open Settings and look under System for device or system information; the exact labels can vary by Windows version. Task Manager’s Performance tab can also show the CPU, memory, and graphics adapter. Record the Windows version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, the CPU model, installed RAM, graphics adapter model, and free storage on the drive where you intend to install the game.

Compare requirements field by field
Make a simple comparison before installing or buying:
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Operating system | The game’s supported Windows versions and any 32-bit or 64-bit requirement, compared with your Windows edition and architecture. |
| CPU | Your processor’s exact model against the listed minimum processor. |
| RAM | Installed memory against the game’s minimum requirement. |
| Graphics | Your graphics adapter model and its supported DirectX and shader features against the game’s listed card and graphics requirements. |
| Storage | Available space on the installation drive against the game’s stated disk-space requirement. |
When the exact graphics card in the requirements is not in your PC, do not compare brand names as if they were a direct ranking. Look for a reliable comparison between the specific models. The sources cited here do not establish a universal benchmark threshold or a dependable performance calculator.

Check the graphics card’s features, not just its name
A GPU model name does not tell the whole story. Some older games require particular DirectX or pixel-shader capabilities. Compare the game’s stated feature requirements with what the graphics hardware supports; installing a recent DirectX runtime does not make a card support every graphics feature a game may need. Steam Support’s DirectX and pixel shader guidance also warns that software emulation of graphics functions can reduce 3D-game compatibility and performance.

Will this old game run on Windows 10 or 11?
Hardware fit and Windows compatibility are separate questions. A PC may meet the CPU, memory, and graphics requirements yet still have trouble installing or launching a game because of differences in Windows architecture, security features, or other system changes. Look for an explicit supported-Windows list, architecture requirements, publisher compatibility notes, and any warning on the store page. Microsoft explains that compatibility issues can arise as Windows changes; its advice is to check for an update from the app’s publisher and, where needed, use the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.

Do not assume every game made for Windows XP or Windows 7 will work on Windows 10 or 11. Manuals can also carry useful historical qualifications. For example, the Scourge of War: Waterloo manual lists Windows 7 or 8.1 and says Windows 8.1 needs Windows 7 compatibility mode. It lists an Intel Core2 Duo at 1.65 GHz or higher, 2 GB RAM, 2 GB disk space, and a 256 MB video card with DirectX 9.0c or higher. The manual says Windows 10 had not been released when the game initially launched, so it makes no official Windows 10 compatibility statement. Those are requirements for that specific game, not a general guide to older sci-fi titles.

- Check the publisher’s support page for an update or compatibility guidance. A patch or publisher note may address a known issue for the specific game.
- Run Microsoft’s Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Microsoft provides it for older apps that have problems on newer versions of Windows.
- Update device drivers if the game opens but has glitches or other issues. Microsoft recommends driver updates as part of troubleshooting apps that run poorly.
These steps can help, but they cannot guarantee that every older game will work on every current PC. See Microsoft’s older-app compatibility guidance for its troubleshooting advice.

Minimum specs do not promise that a game will run well
Minimum requirements are a screening threshold, not a promise of a particular resolution, graphics quality, or frame rate. Steam’s performance guidance identifies available RAM and driver condition as factors that can affect performance, and results also depend on the game and the rest of the PC. Steam Support’s game-performance advice recommends checking the game’s requirements; the listed minimum alone cannot settle how smoothly it will play.
If you are deciding between two PCs or two editions, compare their supported Windows versions and architecture, CPU, RAM, graphics features, and free storage against the requirements for each edition. Decide what experience you want—simply launching the game or playing at a target resolution and frame rate—but use game-specific evidence for that performance goal rather than inferring it from a component name alone.
