How to Check Whether Your PC Can Run a New Racing Game

Check whether your Windows PC meets a racing game’s requirements with DxDiag, a field-by-field comparison and a careful look at performance and storage notes.

To find out whether your PC can run a racing game, compare your computer’s exact specifications with the current requirements for that game and edition. In Windows, use the built-in DxDiag tool to check your operating system, processor, memory, graphics card, video memory and DirectX information. Assess minimum and recommended requirements separately: meeting the minimum is not a promise of a particular frame rate or smooth performance.

There is no universal spec for a “new racing game.” Without the game’s name, edition, PC specifications and target resolution, nobody can give a reliable yes-or-no verdict. The steps below let you make that check for the specific game you’re considering.

Start with the exact game and edition

Open the current product page for the game you plan to play, either from its publisher or the digital store where you intend to buy it. Use that title’s own system requirements—not the requirements for another racing game, an earlier release or a similarly named edition. Requirements can differ between games and can change as a product’s software support evolves.

Dovetail Games’ support guidance, updated April 22, 2026, directs players to the game’s digital product page for its minimum requirements. Check that you have the right edition and platform listing, then note any separate minimum and recommended specifications. If the page does not give a value for a component, do not assume that a different game’s listing fills the gap.

Before comparing anything, record the resolution and quality preset you hope to use. A PC that meets a game’s minimum target may be suitable only for the lower settings described by its publisher; it may not deliver the visual quality or performance you want at a higher resolution or preset.

Make sure you are looking at the PC requirements, not a console listing or a page for another platform. If the store page and publisher page appear to differ, check that they describe the same edition and current version, then consult the publisher’s support guidance rather than choosing whichever numbers look easier to meet. The requirements are tied to the particular game, so a previous racing title from the same studio is not a reliable substitute.

Understand what minimum and recommended mean

Minimum and recommended requirements are separate targets, not two ways of expressing the same result. In Dovetail Games’ explanation, minimum hardware is intended for a satisfactory experience using the lowest settings, while recommended hardware is intended for a good experience using high-to-ultra settings. Those descriptions are publisher guidance, not a universal guarantee of a specific frame rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Meets minimum: Your listed components meet or exceed the game’s minimum values. Treat this as a baseline, not a promise that every race, track or visual setting will run smoothly.
  • Meets recommended: Your listed components meet or exceed the recommended values. This is the stronger match for the experience the publisher describes, but it still does not guarantee a particular FPS in every situation.
  • Falls short: At least one important component is below the corresponding requirement, or a required operating-system, feature or security condition is not met. Name the category that falls short rather than describing the whole PC as simply “too weak.”

Steam Support cautions that satisfying system requirements alone does not ensure high FPS or strong performance. Use any performance estimates the game’s own listing provides, and keep their stated resolution, preset and caveats attached to them.

Consider the two columns independently. For instance, a PC might meet the minimum CPU and graphics values but not the recommended values; that is a minimum match in those categories, not a recommended-spec match overall. Conversely, meeting the recommended CPU value does not cancel out a graphics card or RAM shortfall. A simple table with separate minimum and recommended result columns makes these distinctions visible.

Check your PC’s specifications with DxDiag

DxDiag is a Windows utility that reports system and graphics information useful for a manual comparison. Rockstar Games’ compatibility guide, updated April 28, 2024, identifies the System tab for operating system, processor and memory, and the Display tab for graphics-card details, video memory and driver version and date. Dovetail Games also points to DxDiag for operating system, CPU, RAM, DirectX version, GPU and VRAM.

  1. Open DxDiag: Press Win+R, type dxdiag, then press Enter. If Windows asks whether to check for digitally signed drivers, follow the on-screen prompt to continue.
  2. Read the System tab: Record the operating system and system type, processor, installed memory and DirectX version shown. Keep the full CPU model name, not just a brand or a broad label such as “Core” or “Ryzen.”
  3. Read the Display tab: Record the graphics card name or chip, the displayed video memory and the driver version and date. If DxDiag shows more than one display device or tab, inspect the relevant entries rather than assuming the first name is the only graphics hardware in the PC.
  4. Save a report if you need to refer back: DxDiag offers a button to save its information to a text file. Keep the report private if sharing it; it contains details about your system that you may not want to post publicly.

DxDiag reports what Windows detects; it does not make the final compatibility decision for you. Compare its values against the game listing, and investigate any unclear or missing field using the game’s official support guidance. A graphics card’s manufacturer or family name alone is not enough when the requirement specifies an exact model or a minimum VRAM amount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write down complete model names and numbers as displayed. A short description such as “Intel processor” or “NVIDIA graphics” does not identify which CPU or GPU the PC has, and the store listing may distinguish between specific models. Likewise, note installed system memory separately from video memory: a game can list a RAM requirement and a VRAM requirement because they refer to different parts of the specification. Do not add those amounts together or count one as a substitute for the other.

If your computer has more than one graphics entry, the existence of a display tab for each does not by itself tell you which one a game will use in every situation. Compare the exact graphics model shown with the listing and use the game’s official support information if you cannot identify the relevant hardware. Avoid declaring a match based solely on the more familiar name.

Compare the same component against the same requirement

Make one comparison against the minimum column and another against the recommended column. Use the game listing’s own terminology and units, and note where a requirement has a condition such as a specific Windows architecture, DirectX feature, drive type or security setting.

What to compare Where to find your PC’s value What to check on the game page
Operating system and architecture DxDiag’s System tab Windows version and any 64-bit or other architecture requirement
Processor Full processor model on the System tab Named minimum and recommended CPU models or stated processor criteria
Memory (RAM) Installed memory on the System tab Minimum and recommended memory amounts; do not confuse system RAM with graphics memory
Graphics processor Graphics card name or chip on the Display tab Exact minimum and recommended GPU model or stated graphics criteria
Video memory (VRAM) Video-memory information on the Display tab Any stated VRAM amount; compare it separately from installed system RAM
DirectX DirectX information on the System tab Required version and, where stated, relevant feature requirements
Storage Check the available space and drive type on the PC itself Required free space and whether the listing requires or recommends a particular drive type, such as an SSD
Additional conditions Check the PC and Windows settings relevant to the stated condition Any online, security, platform or other requirements listed for that game

For each row, record whether your PC meets the minimum, meets the recommended value, falls short, or cannot yet be verified. “Cannot yet be verified” is useful: it keeps a missing detail from turning into an unsupported assumption that the game will or will not run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the units and wording on the product page rather than comparing numbers loosely. “Available storage” is not the same question as “what kind of drive is recommended”: check both free capacity and any SSD language. Similarly, a DirectX version listed on the System tab is one comparison, while a separate feature requirement on the game page may call for an additional check. If the listing names a condition you cannot confirm from DxDiag, mark it unresolved and look for the publisher’s instructions.

At the end of the comparison, summarize the result by category: for example, “minimum CPU and RAM met, GPU not verified, storage condition still to check.” That is more useful than a blanket yes or no when the available details do not settle every requirement. It also identifies what to verify next without assuming that one strong component makes up for a shortfall elsewhere.

Interpret the result without promising an FPS

If every listed minimum requirement is met

You have a match with the game’s minimum specification, subject to any additional conditions on its product page. That is a reason to continue checking—not proof that the game will maintain a particular frame rate, run well at high settings or perform identically in every race. Check the publisher’s own performance notes and be prepared to use lower settings if that is what its minimum guidance indicates.

If every recommended requirement is met

Your PC matches the stronger published target for the components listed. Use the game page’s performance notes to understand which resolution and preset, if any, those requirements are meant to support. Recommended specifications still do not establish an FPS guarantee unless the publisher explicitly gives a relevant estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If one or more components fall below a target

Identify the exact shortfall. A PC can exceed a CPU requirement while falling short on the graphics card, or meet the hardware values while failing a separate operating-system or security condition. Keep minimum and recommended results distinct: falling short of recommended does not by itself mean the PC fails minimum, and meeting minimum does not erase a shortfall in another required category.

If the PC model name looks different from the listed example

Do not decide based only on a familiar manufacturer name, a higher-looking model number or the graphics brand. The listed component must be compared with the required model or criteria, including VRAM where specified. If the product page gives examples rather than a clear equivalence rule, consult the game’s official support information instead of guessing from the name.

A published requirement is a target, not a complete test of every possible combination of PC parts or play conditions. Steam Support’s warning matters here: meeting the written values does not promise high FPS or strong performance. If the publisher has not provided a relevant estimate for your resolution and preset, the careful answer is that the requirement comparison is a match or shortfall—not that the game will run at a particular speed.

Check resolution, presets and performance notes

System requirements tell you about hardware targets; performance notes can tell you what the publisher expects at a particular resolution or graphics preset. Read both before deciding. If the game publishes an estimate for 1080p at a named preset, for example, treat that as an estimate for that stated setup—not as a claim about a different resolution, another preset or every demanding scene.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful illustration outside the racing genre is the CAPCOM/Steam listing for PRAGMATA, accessed October 10, 2026. It lists estimated performance of 1080p/45 fps on its Performance preset and 1080p/60 fps on its Balanced preset, warns that frame rate may drop in graphics-intensive scenes, and recommends an SSD. Those figures and conditions apply to that listing; they are not requirements or performance predictions for a racing game.

When a racing-game listing does not give a performance estimate for your intended resolution and preset, there is no evidence in that listing to support a precise FPS prediction. You can still establish whether your PC meets the published hardware targets, but keep that conclusion separate from a claim about how fast it will run.

Look for the complete context around any estimate: resolution, graphics preset and any caveat about demanding scenes. An estimate for one preset should not be carried over to another. Nor does a quoted figure establish that every track, race or graphics-intensive moment will behave the same way. The useful question is not simply “Does the page mention FPS?” but “Does it describe the resolution and preset I want, and does it qualify the estimate?”

Look for conditions beyond CPU, RAM and graphics

Do not stop at the three familiar hardware categories. Check the whole product-page requirements section for operating-system and architecture details, DirectX or feature requirements, storage space, drive type and any online, security or platform conditions. A game may require more than adequate hardware for a particular installation or play setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Listings vary in how much detail they publish. The Battlefield 6 Steam listing, accessed October 10, 2026, includes operating system, CPU, RAM, graphics, DirectX, storage and additional security or platform requirements, with different minimum and recommended values. That is an example of the kinds of fields a product page may contain, not a specification for a racing game.

Keep SSD wording precise. If the page says an SSD is recommended, that is not the same as a stated SSD requirement. If a drive type is required, record it as a separate condition even when the PC has enough free storage space. Capacity and drive type answer different questions.

Additional requirements can matter even when the headline hardware values appear to match. Do not skip a security, platform or online condition as fine print: record whether it applies and whether your setup meets it. If the listing uses wording you do not understand, check the publisher’s explanation rather than assuming the condition is optional or irrelevant.

What to do when the result is uncertain or below minimum

Do not buy a component on the basis of a broad “gaming PC” label or a comparison with another title. First confirm the exact game requirement and the PC’s exact model. Dovetail Games and Rockstar Games provide guidance on locating the relevant specifications, while Steam Support advises that an under-spec system may need appropriate hardware upgrades. Which upgrade, if any, makes sense depends on the named shortfall and the rest of the PC; these details are not available for an unspecified game and computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Requirement is unclear: Check the game publisher’s current support page or the product listing for a more precise explanation.
  • Your PC value is unclear: Recheck the relevant DxDiag tab and capture the full model name and reported value, rather than relying on a partial name from a sticker or old purchase listing.
  • A listed condition is unmet: Check the publisher’s instructions for that operating-system, feature, storage or security requirement before treating the PC as compatible.
  • A component is below minimum: Treat that as a real gap to investigate. Do not infer that a specific GPU, CPU, memory kit or drive will solve it without checking the PC’s configuration and the game’s requirements.

No upgrade cost can be stated responsibly without knowing the actual game, the PC’s model and the component that falls short. The possible remedy is conditional: a comparison might identify a hardware gap, but it does not select a suitable replacement or establish its price. First verify the shortfall and consult the game’s official support guidance; do not buy a GPU, CPU, RAM or drive solely because it appears in a generic recommendation for another game.

If the problem is a missing or ambiguous requirement rather than a clear hardware shortfall, an upgrade may not address it. Verify the exact condition first. Keep a note of unresolved fields so you can seek a specific answer from the publisher or support page, rather than asking whether a vaguely described PC can run a vaguely described game.

Because product requirements and software support can change, recheck the current listing near the time you buy or install the game. A saved comparison is useful, but it is not a substitute for the game’s current page.

A final pre-purchase check

  1. Confirm the exact racing game, edition and current product listing.
  2. Copy its minimum and recommended requirements into separate notes.
  3. Use DxDiag to record Windows and system details, CPU, RAM, graphics card, VRAM and DirectX information.
  4. Check storage capacity, drive type and every additional condition on the game page.
  5. Compare each field separately, and label the result as meeting minimum, meeting recommended, falling short in a named category or not yet verified.
  6. Read performance notes for their specific resolution, preset and caveats; do not turn a hardware match into an unsupported FPS promise.

If any field remains uncertain, pause at that point instead of treating the comparison as a definite compatibility verdict. A precise list of what matches and what still needs checking is the most reliable answer available until those details are confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check if my PC can run a new racing game?

Find the current product page for the exact game and edition, copy its minimum and recommended requirements separately, then use DxDiag to note your Windows details, CPU, RAM, graphics card, VRAM and DirectX information. Compare each field, and check storage and any additional conditions on the listing.

Does meeting the minimum requirements mean the game will run smoothly?

No. Dovetail Games describes minimum requirements as hardware for a satisfactory experience using the lowest settings, but that is publisher guidance rather than a promise of a particular frame rate. Steam Support also cautions that meeting requirements alone does not ensure high FPS or strong performance.

What is the difference between minimum and recommended requirements?

In Dovetail Games’ explanation, minimum hardware targets a satisfactory experience at the lowest settings, while recommended hardware targets a good experience using high-to-ultra settings. Compare your PC against each column separately; meeting recommended for one component does not offset a shortfall in another.

Where do I find my PC’s CPU, RAM, graphics card and VRAM?

Press Win+R, type dxdiag and press Enter. The System tab shows operating system, processor and memory information; the Display tab shows graphics-card details, video memory and driver version and date. Dovetail Games also points to DxDiag for DirectX information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the graphics-card brand or family name enough to confirm compatibility?

No. Compare the exact graphics model and any stated VRAM amount with the game’s requirement. If the model names do not line up clearly, check the game’s official support guidance rather than guessing from a manufacturer name or a higher-looking model number.

Can I use system RAM to meet a VRAM requirement?

Do not treat them as interchangeable. Compare installed memory (RAM) with the game’s system-memory requirement and the displayed video memory (VRAM) with any separate graphics-memory requirement.

Will my PC run the game at a particular FPS?

Only use a performance estimate when the game’s own listing gives one relevant to your resolution and preset, and retain any caveats about demanding scenes. A minimum or recommended-spec match alone does not establish a specific FPS.

Should I upgrade a component if my PC falls below minimum?

First identify the exact shortfall and check the publisher’s current support guidance. Steam Support says an under-spec system may need appropriate hardware upgrades, but the suitable component depends on the particular game and PC. Without those details, no specific upgrade or cost can be recommended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the game listing does not mention my PC’s component or a requirement is unclear?

Do not fill in the gap using another game’s requirements. Mark the field as not yet verified, then check the publisher’s current product listing or official support guidance for clarification.

The Bottom Line

Check the current requirements for the exact racing game, use DxDiag to record your PC’s specifications, and compare minimum and recommended values one field at a time. Include storage, DirectX and any additional conditions, and treat FPS estimates as specific to their stated resolution and preset. A requirements match is useful guidance—not a guarantee of smooth play or a particular frame rate.
