How to Check Whether Your PC Can Install a New Windows 11 Feature Update

Windows Update shows whether Microsoft is offering a feature update to your PC. PC Health Check assesses baseline hardware eligibility, while rollout timing and safeguard holds can affect availability.

To see whether a specific Windows 11 feature update is available for your PC, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. For a fuller check, identify your current Windows version, review the complete Windows Update message, and use PC Health Check if you need to assess baseline hardware eligibility. A compatible PC is not necessarily being offered every release: Microsoft stages rollouts and may temporarily hold updates for devices with known compatibility issues.

Check your installed Windows version first

Your current version helps you understand which update path applies. Search for winver and open it, or go to Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications. Note the version and edition shown there.

Those details matter because feature-update paths and support dates can differ by release and edition. For example, Microsoft’s February 10, 2026 information says Windows 11, version 26H1 is intended for select new devices, not as an in-place update for existing 24H2 or 25H2 PCs. The same notice said the next annual feature update was planned for the second half of 2026. Check Microsoft’s version 26H1 release information and Windows Update for current details that apply to your device.

Check whether Windows Update offers the feature update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Read the full status message. If an update is offered, follow the on-screen instructions. If it is not, note whether Windows displays a reason or a link to more information.

Windows Update is the practical check for whether Microsoft is offering a release to this PC now. A missing offer does not by itself mean the hardware is incompatible. Availability can vary during a staged rollout, and a safeguard hold can delay an offer while Microsoft addresses a known compatibility issue. See Microsoft’s ways to install Windows 11 for the update guidance.

Understand what each check tells you

Check What it answers Does it show this release is offered now?
Settings > Windows Update Whether Windows is offering an update to this PC and any status message shown. Yes. This is the relevant per-device offer check.
PC Health Check Whether the PC meets baseline Windows 11 hardware requirements, and some reasons it may not. No. It does not guarantee that a particular feature update is currently cleared for the PC.
Windows release health and safeguard information Whether Microsoft has documented a known issue or temporary compatibility hold relevant to an update. It can help explain a missing offer, but Windows Update remains the check for the device’s current offer.

Microsoft’s PC Health Check guidance describes how to assess general eligibility. Treat that result as a hardware baseline, not a promise that every current or future feature update is available.

Check baseline hardware eligibility if needed

Microsoft’s published Windows 11 baseline includes an approved processor running at 1 GHz or faster with two or more cores, at least 4 GB of RAM, at least 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a high-definition display larger than 9 inches. See the current Windows 11 system requirements for the full specification.

Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

These are minimum requirements for Windows 11 generally. Meeting them does not establish that a particular feature update is being offered to your PC, and a failed check may identify a baseline issue without explaining every update-specific restriction.

If the update is not offered

Look for a safeguard or compatibility message

Read the Windows Update status carefully and follow any Learn more link. Microsoft uses safeguard holds to temporarily prevent devices with known issues from being offered a feature update. The hold can remain until the issue is resolved; timing depends on that resolution. Check Microsoft’s Windows release health information and its guidance on checking safeguard holds for documented details.

Account for staged rollout timing

Microsoft does not necessarily offer a feature update to every compatible device at once. If there is no error or hold message, the release may simply not have reached your PC yet. Check Windows Update again later rather than treating the absence of an offer as proof of hardware failure.

Ask IT if the PC is managed

Work or school devices may follow an organization’s update policies and schedule. Microsoft’s consumer eligibility guidance is intended for PCs that are not managed by an IT administrator. If your PC is managed, ask the administrator whether the release is approved and when it is scheduled; a missing consumer offer is not enough to diagnose a hardware problem.

Should you use the Windows Update Assistant?

Microsoft describes the Windows Update Assistant as a manual way to install the latest feature update on a compatible PC that has not received it automatically. It supports x86/64 devices and does not run on ARM-based PCs. Consult Microsoft’s installation options for current availability and instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use it only after checking Windows Update and confirming that the tool applies to your device. A manual installer is not the first test of eligibility and should not be treated as a way to bypass a compatibility block or safeguard hold.

Check support dates for your version and edition

Feature-update availability and support deadlines are separate questions. Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 notice says Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro editions reach end of updates on October 13, 2026, while Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 12, 2027. These dates apply to the specified 24H2 editions; confirm your version and edition in Settings > System > About, and consult Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information for applicable timelines.
