Open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting in Windows 11, connect your RGB device, and look for its card at the top of the page. If it appears, Windows has recognized it in its current connection. For a device you plan to buy, check the exact model, firmware, and connection mode for Microsoft’s HID LampArray compatibility; “RGB” alone does not mean it will work with Dynamic Lighting.
Check whether your PC has the Dynamic Lighting page
- Open Settings and go to System > About to confirm that the PC is running Windows 11. You can also search Settings for “About.” Microsoft’s general Windows 11 requirements determine whether a PC meets Windows 11’s system requirements; they do not certify compatibility with a particular RGB device.
- Go to Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting. Microsoft documents this as the page for its lighting controls. If it is missing, check that Windows is up to date and whether the PC is managed by an organization. The available Microsoft guidance does not establish a universal current build or edition threshold that guarantees the page on every PC.
If the page is present, connect the device and look for its card along the top. Microsoft says connected, compatible devices appear as cards and can be adjusted individually; global controls are below them. A card is a practical check that Windows recognizes the device in its current connection, not a guarantee that every effect or app will behave as expected. Microsoft’s Dynamic Lighting help describes the page and its controls.

Check whether a particular RGB device is compatible
Windows 11 readiness and RGB compatibility are separate questions. Microsoft identifies HID LampArray as the compatibility standard for Dynamic Lighting. Devices can implement it through native firmware or a VHF driver, but support for a general device category does not mean every product in that category works. Microsoft lists categories such as keyboards, mice, game controllers, peripherals, chassis components, wearables, furniture, and room or scene devices in its HID LampArray documentation.
- Find the exact model number, not just the product family or brand.
- Check Microsoft’s current compatible-device information and the manufacturer’s specifications or firmware notes for that model.
- Confirm the connection mode you intend to use: wired USB, Bluetooth, or a wireless dongle. Support can differ by mode; Microsoft notes that wireless support is not universal, even among listed devices.
- For a listed device, use the latest firmware recommended by its manufacturer.
For a keyboard, “HID LampArray-compatible” is a useful shopping search phrase, not proof that a particular listing is currently compatible. Confirm the exact model and intended connection before buying. Microsoft’s October 31, 2023 Windows Insider announcement provides historical background on the feature and its protocol, but it is not a current model list.

Understand the controls and why they may not work
The Dynamic Lighting page has a master Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices toggle, foreground-app priority, Background light control, Brightness, and Effects. Global controls apply across connected devices, while settings on an individual device card override the global values for that device.
A device not selected for Background light control operates in “Autonomous mode”: the hardware falls back to the default behavior defined by its firmware. That can make it look as though Windows has not taken control, even if the device is recognized. See Microsoft’s Dynamic lighting documentation.

Troubleshoot a device that is missing or unresponsive
The device does not appear as a card
- Verify the exact model’s LampArray compatibility and check for a recommended firmware update.
- Try a connection mode the manufacturer supports for Dynamic Lighting. If wireless behavior is uncertain, try the manufacturer-recommended wired connection.
- Check that the Dynamic Lighting page is available and that Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices is enabled.
The card appears, but brightness or effects do not change
- On the device card, check for device-specific settings that override global brightness or effects.
- In Background light control, inspect the registered controllers and move the controller you want to manage the device higher in the priority list. Microsoft identifies a higher-priority background RGB controller as a possible reason Windows changes do not reach the device.
- Check whether a compatible foreground app is taking control. By default, a foreground app may control a LampArray device.
- If you moved the device to another USB port, review the priority settings for the newly recognized device entry. Microsoft says background priorities are associated with the device and USB port, so a different port can make it appear as a different device.
