Check each RPG in Nintendo’s official Switch-game compatibility checker to see whether its existing Switch version runs on Switch 2, then separately look for a free update or paid “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” upgrade pack. Those are different questions: a game can be playable without having an enhanced edition, and compatibility can still come with limitations.
Check whether the base game runs on Switch 2
- Search the exact title. Open Nintendo’s Switch-game compatibility page and enter the game’s name in the search box. Check the exact edition where relevant.
- Read the full result and any notes. A game may start but have partial functionality issues; a result is not necessarily a promise that every feature works as it did on the original Switch.
- Ask the publisher when needed. For a third-party RPG, Nintendo recommends contacting its publisher for specific compatibility information. This is especially useful if the checker does not answer a question about a particular feature or version.
Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo cautions that some games may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Its compatibility information can change as testing and updates continue, so recheck the listing near the time you plan to play.

Check separately for an update or upgrade pack
Once you know whether the base game works, look at the game’s official information or Nintendo eShop listing for a free update or a “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” and its upgrade pack. An update or pack adds title-specific improvements or features; it is not required simply to answer whether the original Switch game is compatible.

How Nintendo describes Switch 2 Edition upgrades
Nintendo says a Switch 2 Edition bundles the original Switch game with its upgrade pack. Owners of the original game, whether physical or digital, can obtain a selected title’s pack through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or retailers. Some packs are available at no additional cost to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. The available enhancements differ by game, and Switch 2 Edition features can only be played on Switch 2. Check the specific title’s listing rather than assuming it has a pack or that every pack follows the same terms.

Use Pokémon Scarlet and Violet as a dated example—not a complete list
In an announcement dated May 29, 2025, Nintendo named Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet among games scheduled to receive free Switch 2 enhancements on June 5, 2025. Nintendo instructed players to connect the new console to the internet and update its system before downloading the game updates. This example does not establish that every Pokémon RPG, or every Switch RPG, has the same update; check each title’s current official information.

If your game and upgrade pack come from different regions, do not assume they will work together. Nintendo says regional compatibility depends on the software. Confirm the region and edition in the specific pack listing before obtaining it.
