How to Check Whether Your Network Card Is Running at Full Speed

Learn how to check a network card’s reported link rate, test local connectivity, and isolate slow Ethernet or Wi-Fi performance from router and internet problems.

To check a network card’s performance, compare its reported connection rate with a repeatable test of the local network and, separately, an internet speed test. A displayed link rate is not the same as sustained data throughput, and an internet test measures the whole path—including the router, internet service, test server, and other traffic—not just the network card. The steps below focus on Windows; labels and equivalent checks differ on other operating systems.

1. Identify the adapter and record its status

  1. Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters. Note the adapter name, driver version and date, and whether the adapter is enabled or shows an error. Microsoft recommends checking adapter details when Wi-Fi is unavailable or an adapter does not appear. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide explains these checks.
  2. Check the active connection in Windows network settings or the adapter’s status properties. Record any reported link-rate information along with whether you are connected over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

A reported rate describes the negotiated link, not the speed applications will always achieve. The result depends on both ends of the connection and, for Wi-Fi, the radio conditions; configuration and physical components can also limit it.

2. Establish a repeatable baseline

Run a speed test and note the result, test location, connection type, and conditions. Keep the test service and conditions as consistent as possible when repeating it. For Wi-Fi, Microsoft recommends testing in several places and recording results before making changes, then testing again afterward. See Microsoft’s guidance on Wi-Fi and home layout.

Use an internet speed test to assess the overall internet path, not to certify the network card’s maximum throughput. Other devices using the network, the router, the internet provider, and the remote test service can all affect the result. There is no universal expected speed-test result that can diagnose a card on its own.

3. Check the local connection before blaming the internet

Ping the default gateway

On Windows, find the default gateway in the active connection’s network details, then open Command Prompt and run ping followed by that gateway address—for example, ping 192.168.1.1 only if that is the gateway shown on your network. A reply indicates that the PC can reach the router; it does not measure maximum throughput. If the router responds but internet access still fails, the fault may be beyond the local Wi-Fi connection, such as at the modem or with the internet provider. Microsoft describes this distinction in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps.

Use a local transfer when possible

If you have another computer on the same local network, compare a file transfer between the two devices. This can help assess local data movement without making internet service or a remote test server part of the measurement. Intel also suggests a point-to-point file transfer when investigating gigabit Ethernet. The result still depends on the other computer, its storage, and the test setup, so it is not a pure measurement of the adapter alone. See Intel’s gigabit Ethernet troubleshooting guidance.

  • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS

4. Diagnose a wired link that appears capped at 100 Mbps

A 10/100 Mbps negotiated rate on a connection expected to support gigabit is a reason to check the whole wired link before replacing the network card. The adapter, cable, and connected switch, router, or other device all need to support the intended connection. Intel’s cited guidance concerns specific Intel gigabit adapter families and Windows 10 64-bit; its checks are useful diagnostic pointers, but exact applicability depends on your hardware and operating system.

  1. Confirm the Ethernet cable is fully seated in the correct ports, and check Windows network status. Microsoft recommends trying another cable or device as part of its Ethernet troubleshooting steps.
  2. Verify that both the PC’s adapter and the connected port support gigabit Ethernet. A gigabit-capable PC cannot negotiate gigabit through a 10/100 port.
  3. Check that auto-negotiation is enabled at both ends. Intel recommends auto-negotiation and checking the capabilities of the link partner.
  4. Try a known-good cable. Intel recommends Cat 6 or better for reliable gigabit speed and suggests substituting a cable known to work; changing a cable is a troubleshooting check, not a guaranteed speed upgrade.
  5. Check the adapter’s driver version and status. If available, compare with another computer on the same port and cable, or use a local point-to-point transfer to reduce internet-side variables.

A USB-to-Ethernet adapter can help if the computer has no Ethernet port or provide another path for comparison. It adds its own adapter and driver to the connection, so confirm that it supports the required link speed and is compatible with the computer and operating system.

5. Check Wi-Fi signal, placement, and band

Wi-Fi performance reflects the adapter and the surrounding radio link. Signal strength, obstructions, access-point placement, band support, and channel conditions can all affect the result. Microsoft recommends comparing recorded tests from different locations and reducing obstructions between the device and access point.

  • Test in more than one location, keeping the test conditions consistent. If performance improves closer to the access point, the location or radio conditions may be contributing.
  • Compare another device at the same location. If it performs similarly poorly, a shared network or access-point issue is more plausible than a problem unique to the PC.
  • Check which bands the adapter, driver, and access point support. A device cannot use a band it does not support.
  • For 6 GHz Wi-Fi, Microsoft notes that a compatible router, Windows device, and network-adapter driver are required. The 6 GHz band has shorter range and passes through walls less effectively than lower bands. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi layout guidance.
  • If only this PC has trouble, inspect its adapter and driver state, supported bands, power settings, and radio conditions. Microsoft includes disabling Wi-Fi adapter power saving among troubleshooting steps in its Wi-Fi connection guide.

6. Use comparisons to locate the bottleneck

What you observe What it suggests Useful next check
Several devices are slow on the same network. A shared network, router, or internet-side condition may be responsible; this comparison does not identify the exact cause. Compare local connectivity with internet access, and check the shared network path.
Only one PC or one interface is slow. The computer’s adapter, driver, configuration, antenna, or cable deserves closer attention. Compare the same PC on another connection or another device on the same connection.
Ethernet reports a low negotiated rate. The port, peer device, cable, or negotiation may be limiting the link. Check both ends, auto-negotiation, and a known-good cable before replacing the adapter.
Wi-Fi improves near the access point or on another supported band. Radio conditions, placement, or access-point capability may be affecting performance. Compare location and band results rather than treating the adapter’s advertised specification as achieved speed.
The gateway responds, but internet access is still poor or unavailable. The PC can reach the router, while a problem farther along the internet path remains possible. Check the modem, internet provider, or broader network path.

These are diagnostic clues, not conclusive hardware tests. Microsoft recommends comparing devices and wired versus Wi-Fi connections to help isolate problems in its Ethernet guide and Wi-Fi guide.

7. Escalate carefully if the issue is intermittent

For frequent disconnections or a complex failure, collect baseline observations before disruptive resets or driver removal: note when the issue happens, the connection type, the adapter and driver details, and whether other devices are affected. Microsoft Learn describes symptom-first troubleshooting and advanced diagnosis using Windows WLAN event logs and ETW tracing. Event names and details vary by Windows version, adapter, and driver model, so most home users should begin with the consumer checks above and reserve tracing for advanced troubleshooting or support.
