A worrying SSD health score—or a slow mini PC—doesn’t by itself prove the drive is failing. First identify whether the drive is NVMe or SATA, check it with a tool that supports that drive type, and inspect the underlying warning details. If Windows reports a critical warning, back up your files and seek drive-maker guidance before deciding on a replacement.
Check what kind of drive is installed
Start by identifying the drive and its interface. This matters because Windows’ documented critical storage health monitoring applies to NVM SSDs, not SATA SSDs or hard drives. A missing Windows warning therefore cannot establish that every storage device in a mini PC is healthy. Use your mini PC’s specifications, its manual, or the drive’s model information to determine whether the installed drive is NVMe or SATA. Do not infer the interface from the computer’s small size or from the fact that a replacement listing says “SSD.” If you use CrystalDiskInfo, its official page lists support for HDDs and SSDs, some USB and Intel RAID configurations, and NVMe; NVMe support requires Windows 10 or later, or Windows Server 2016 or later. Read health details, not just a percentage
For an NVM SSD, Windows can surface critical warnings about spare capacity below the manufacturer’s safety threshold, degraded reliability due to significant media errors or an internal NVM subsystem error, and a drive that has entered a read-only state. These warnings are more actionable than a general impression that the computer feels sluggish.

The NVMe health information log includes fields such as available spare, estimated percentage used, temperature, and media errors. Microsoft defines these fields in the NVME_HEALTH_INFO_LOG structure. Interpret them as separate evidence, not as a single countdown to failure: Microsoft says a percentage-used value of 100 means estimated endurance has been consumed, but that reading does not necessarily mean the NVM subsystem has failed.
Health labels are also tool- and drive-dependent. CrystalDiskInfo describes different criteria for SSD remaining life and HDD SMART attributes, including sector-related values. Its health-status explanation is a reminder not to treat one displayed word or percentage as a standardized prediction across all drives. If an app reports a concerning status, inspect which attribute or warning triggered it and consider the drive maker’s interpretation.

Back up and corroborate before replacing the SSD
If Windows raises the critical storage warning covered by Microsoft, protect your data promptly. Microsoft Support says, “We strongly recommend you pay attention to this message.” In that context, the message is a critical warning for a storage device; Microsoft’s guidance is to back up and follow the recommended next steps. A general performance benchmark or a slow startup, by itself, is not established by these sources as an SSD-failure test.
After backing up, use the drive manufacturer’s supported diagnostic or support route to corroborate the warning and ask about warranty coverage. There is no single vendor-neutral self-test or universal result threshold established here for every mini PC and drive. Treat any finding in the context of the specific drive model and its supported diagnostic guidance.

Verify compatibility if a replacement is justified
Only shop for a replacement after the drive evidence and support guidance point that way. Confirm the exact mini PC model’s supported interface, physical drive size, and capacity limit before ordering. “NVMe SSD” describes a category, not a guarantee that a particular module fits or is supported in your machine. The available Windows guidance distinguishes NVM and SATA monitoring but does not identify your mini PC model or certify a specific replacement.
