1. Identify your exact Mac model
Start with the model, not just the chip family. Asahi’s Device List maps supported-device entries to Mac model identifiers and SoC codes. For example, it distinguishes the Mac mini (M4, 2024), identified as Mac16,10 / J773gAP / T8132, from the Mac mini (M4 Pro, 2024), Mac16,11 / J773sAP / T6040. M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max Macs—and different chassis using the same chip—are not interchangeable support targets.

Use the marketing name and, where available, the device identifier and SoC code to find the corresponding column in the support matrix.

Open Asahi’s M4 Series Feature Support matrix and locate your exact model column. The table covers shared SoC blocks as well as model-specific peripherals, so inspect both. Check the rows that matter to your intended use, such as installation, display, input, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, storage, audio, ports, power management, and sleep.

Support is feature-by-feature. A device-tree entry, a working display path, or support for one block does not establish that the computer can be installed and used as a complete Linux system. The matrix also notes that many peripherals depend on DART and PCIe support.
3. Interpret the status labels correctly

Do not treat upstream Linux and Asahi kernel packages as interchangeable. A feature available only through an Asahi kernel path is not automatically available in a generic kernel shipped by your distribution. Also, booting a kernel and having working drivers for the Mac’s hardware are separate questions: Asahi’s Introduction to Apple Silicon explains that these machines use a distinct boot environment and that other operating systems must follow the macOS boot ABI.

4. Read the current M4 status as a whole
In the matrix accessed on October 4, 2026, listed M4 models showed installer status no and device-tree status linux-asahi (7.4). That device-tree status is not an end-user installer or a claim of complete hardware support.

Many core blocks—including GPU, Thunderbolt, PCIe, DART, cpufreq, cpuidle, and suspend/sleep—were marked TBA. Some M4 video-decoder and NVMe work was marked WIP. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, input, and ports varied by model and were often TBA. Use the live matrix for the exact model and required features rather than extrapolating from this dated snapshot.

5. Make a go/no-go check for your use case
- Confirm the model column. Match the Mac’s model identifier and SoC against the Asahi Device List.
- Confirm an installation path. Check the installer row; do not infer installability from a device-tree entry.
- List the functions you need. Check each relevant feature row, including peripherals and power management, in the exact model column.
- Identify the kernel path. For every required feature, distinguish an upstream release from an Asahi-only status such as
linux-asahiorasahi-edge. - Recheck before acting. The feature matrix is live and can change; verify it again before installing Linux or choosing a Mac for Linux use.
