Search the exact itinerary you booked, then ask the airline or booking agent what your ticket’s rules allow. A lower fare shows that a cheaper option is currently being sold; it does not automatically reprice your existing ticket or entitle you to a refund.
Check whether the cheaper listing is really the same flight
Start with your confirmation email or the airline’s app. Note the operating carrier, flight numbers, origin and destination, travel dates, passenger count, cabin, and fare type. Also note whether you booked directly with the airline or through an online travel agency (OTA): the original seller may need to handle changes or refunds.

Search those details in Google Flights or another flight search tool. If you find a lower price, compare the complete offer rather than just the headline fare:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Confirm the flight numbers, dates, passenger count, and cabin match.
- Check the fare type and its restrictions. A basic or otherwise more limited fare is not necessarily equivalent to the fare you bought.
- Compare the total for all passengers, including applicable taxes, mandatory fees, and surcharges.
- Check what is included, such as baggage or other services, so a cheaper stripped-down fare is not mistaken for the same product.
These checks matter because a lower price for a different fare or a different set of included services is not a like-for-like drop. U.S. Department of Transportation guidance says displayed airfare must include applicable taxes and mandatory surcharges.

Set an alert to monitor the public fare
Use Google Flights price tracking
- Search your route and dates in Google Flights.
- Select the same flight or route you want to monitor.
- Turn on Track prices for the selected flights or dates.
- Watch for Google’s email when it detects a significant price change, then verify the fare and terms directly before acting.
Tracking helps you spot a newly available fare; it does not change your existing reservation or promise a refund. An alert is a reason to check your ticket’s options, not confirmation that the lower offer applies to your booking.
Ask the original seller what your ticket permits
Open the reservation’s Manage booking, Change flight, or fare-rules page, or contact the seller that issued the ticket. If you booked through an agent, start there unless the booking instructions say otherwise. Ask specific questions before making a change:

- Can this ticket be changed to the lower fare, and must the replacement flight be different?
- After any change fee and fare difference, would value be returned as cash, airline credit, or points?
- What are the credit’s expiry date and restrictions?
- What would cancellation and rebooking cost, and can the new fare still be purchased?
Then compare the net value of changing or cancelling and rebooking with keeping your current ticket. Do not cancel first: the replacement fare can disappear or change, and the applicable terms depend on the airline, fare, route, and booking channel.
What Google Flights’ Price guarantee does—and does not—cover
Google’s ordinary Track prices feature is separate from its Price guarantee program. The guarantee applies only to select eligible itineraries that show a guarantee badge; it is not a general promise to adjust any ticket after a fare drops.

Google’s help terms describe eligible one-way or round-trip itineraries departing the United States, with Google set to the U.S. region and currency set to USD. The itinerary components must match, including airline, flight number, dates, passengers, fare, cabin class, and cancellation policy. Google says it monitors a selected guaranteed itinerary until the first flight departs. Under the stated terms, the difference must exceed $5, the maximum is $500 per Google Account per calendar year, and payment is made through Google Pay after the traveler confirms the booking. Changing or cancelling any part of the trip voids the difference. Check the current terms and eligibility when booking; these conditions do not make ordinary price tracking a price-protection benefit.
U.S. 24-hour cancellation is a narrow window, not price protection
For tickets bought from an airline at least seven days before scheduled departure, U.S. Department of Transportation rules require the airline to offer either cancellation within 24 hours for a full refund without penalty or a 24-hour hold at the quoted fare. The airline does not have to offer both options, and the rule does not require free changes. It does not apply to bookings made through an OTA or travel agent; contact that seller about its terms.

If you are within the applicable window, confirm which option your booking qualifies for and that the lower fare is still available before cancelling and buying again. Outside that situation, there is no general U.S. DOT right to a refund simply because the same flight became cheaper. Refund rights for a covered cancellation or significant schedule change when you reject the alternative are a different issue from a voluntary fare drop.
Airline policies show why the result depends on the ticket
| Example | What the policy says about a lower fare | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Southwest | Its Lower Fare Refund Options page describes changing a reservation or cancelling and rebooking. For nonrefundable fares, a difference is returned as flight credit or Transferable Flight Credit depending on the fare purchased. For reward travel, a decrease returns the difference in Rapid Rewards points to the original account. | The same page states that flight credit associated with Basic fares expires after six months. Check the live terms and the fare on your specific ticket. |
| Delta | Its change and cancellation outcomes vary with ticket and itinerary conditions, and may involve fees and fare differences. Delta’s Low Fare Commitment describes a risk-free cancellation period limited to the first 24 hours, not an ongoing fare-adjustment policy. | Check the ticket’s conditions and applicable change or cancellation terms; do not assume a price drop will be paid back in cash or credit. |
These are carrier-specific examples, not rules for other airlines. Even within one airline, the fare and booking circumstances can change the outcome.

Make the decision using the net amount, not the advertised drop
Before changing anything, compare the potential savings with every cost and restriction: change or cancellation fees, the fare difference, the form and expiry of any credit or points, and the services included in the replacement fare. The U.S. DOT notes that in some cases cancelling and rebooking may cost less than paying a change fee and the difference between the original and current fare, but prices can move quickly. Keep your existing ticket until the seller confirms the permitted steps and you know the new fare is available.
