For standard categories, the baseline is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category—not per account. The FDIC’s free Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) can help you model your situation.
Calculate your deposits bank by bank
- List your deposit accounts and balances. Include checking, savings, money market deposit accounts, CDs and other deposit products. For interest-bearing accounts, include accrued interest through the date of a bank closing when estimating coverage; the FDIC includes it in the covered account balance.
- Identify the insured bank holding each deposit. Use account agreements or bank disclosures if an account is offered through a fintech or another brand and the bank relationship is unclear. Separately chartered insured banks are treated separately, but different branches of the same insured bank do not provide separate coverage.
- Identify the owner and ownership category for each account. The FDIC recognizes categories such as single, joint, certain retirement, trust, employee benefit plan, corporation/partnership/unincorporated association, and government accounts. The legal ownership and capacity in which funds are held matter; an everyday account label alone does not establish eligibility for a category.
- Add balances within each bank and category. Combine all deposits owned by the same depositor or depositors in the same category at that bank. Checking, savings and CDs are aggregated when they fall in the same category. Opening another account or switching deposit products does not by itself create additional coverage.
- Compare each total with its category’s limit. For standard categories, the baseline limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. Separate categories may receive separate coverage when their requirements are met.
The FDIC’s Deposit Insurance resource page links to EDIE, the Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator. Enter the relevant account ownership and balance information to model your arrangement. The FDIC describes the core aggregation rule this way: “All deposits owned by the same depositor (or depositors) in the same ownership category are added together for the purpose of determining FDIC deposit insurance coverage.” See its General Principles of Insurance Coverage.

Check the details that can change the result
Use the FDIC’s Understanding Deposit Insurance guidance and Deposit Insurance FAQs alongside EDIE if your accounts involve joint owners, trust beneficiaries, retirement funds, a business, employee benefits, government funds, or pass-through arrangements. Category rules may depend on ownership, titling, beneficiaries, participant interests, or records. Do not assume that adding a name or changing an account label qualifies the funds for another limit. For complicated arrangements, confirm the details with the FDIC.

FDIC insurance applies to eligible deposits, not every product sold by a bank or brokerage. Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, life insurance and Treasury securities are not FDIC-insured deposits. Treasury securities have a different protection: they are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. The FDIC lists product distinctions in Are My Deposit Accounts Insured by the FDIC? and its Your Insured Deposits brochure.

What to do if a category total is above the limit
A total above the applicable limit means some of that category’s deposits may be uninsured under the calculation; it does not mean every deposit at the bank is uninsured. Recheck the bank, owner, category and balance inputs in EDIE, then review the relevant category requirements. If ownership or recordkeeping is complex, seek confirmation from the FDIC rather than relying on the account’s product name or a bank’s brand alone. This is a general calculation, not an account-specific coverage determination.
