1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo check whether your CPU meets an operating system’s requirements, identify the exact processor model and the exact OS release you want to run, then compare them with that OS publisher’s current requirements. A processor’s brand, age, clock speed, or core count alone cannot establish compatibility. For Windows 11, for example, a processor must meet the speed and core minimums and appear on Microsoft’s approved processor list; a separate check is needed for the rest of the PC.
1. Identify the operating system and release
Start with the specific operating system and version you plan to install or upgrade to. Requirements differ across operating systems and can change between releases, so a result for Windows 11 does not establish compatibility with macOS or Linux, or vice versa.

Use the target OS publisher’s requirements or supported-hardware page. Check its support lifecycle as well as its CPU criteria: a processor can meet a release’s hardware requirements even when that release is no longer receiving support.
2. Find your exact processor model
Use the system’s built-in About page and record the full processor or chip name. Do not rely on a computer’s marketing name or a vague description such as “Core i5” or “Ryzen 5”; different models within a family may have different support status.

- Windows: Open Settings > System > About and read the processor listing.
- Mac: Choose Apple menu > About This Mac. The page labels Apple silicon as Chip and Intel hardware as Processor. Apple began transitioning certain Mac models to Apple silicon in late 2020, but the chip label alone does not tell you which macOS releases support your Mac. Check the exact Mac model against the target macOS version. Apple’s explanation of the transition to Apple silicon describes the change.
- Ubuntu: Open Settings > System > About and read Processor. Ubuntu’s hardware-identification help describes the device details shown there.
3. Compare the CPU with the target OS’s criteria
Find the OS maker’s requirements for the particular release and look for its processor model list, minimum performance, and supported architecture. Apply every relevant condition; a processor passing one threshold does not necessarily mean it is supported.
Windows 11
Microsoft lists three CPU conditions: a processor must run at 1 GHz or faster, have two or more cores, and appear on Microsoft’s approved processor list. The speed and core count do not substitute for the approved-model check. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements provides the criteria and processor lists.

Microsoft says the processor’s clock speed and number of cores are fixed characteristics of its design, not upgradeable components. In Microsoft’s words: “The clock speed (the 1 Ghz or faster requirement) and number of cores (2 or more) are inherent to the processor design as it was manufactured and are not considered upgradable components.”

Ubuntu’s Community Help Wiki gives a 2 GHz dual-core processor as a recommended minimum for Ubuntu Desktop and says 64-bit x86-64 CPUs should be fast enough to run Ubuntu. These are broad community-wiki guidelines, not a guarantee for every Ubuntu release, device, or workload. Architecture also matters: Ubuntu documentation lists architectures including x86_64 and ARM64. Check the current requirements for the specific distribution and release you intend to install. Ubuntu Community Help Wiki: Installation/SystemRequirements and Ubuntu’s installation documentation cover these considerations.

macOS
Do not treat the Chip or Processor label in About This Mac as a compatibility verdict. Check the precise Mac model against Apple’s supported-model information for the macOS release you want. The CPU-family distinction is useful for identifying the hardware, but it does not by itself establish version support.
4. Run a whole-device eligibility check where available
For a Windows 10 PC, Microsoft recommends the free PC Health Check app to find out whether the device meets Windows 11’s overall requirements. It checks more than the CPU, so a system may have an eligible processor and still fail another requirement. Microsoft’s PC Health Check guidance explains the check and how to use it.

Read the result as a device-eligibility diagnosis rather than a CPU speed test. Microsoft also says it may temporarily delay an upgrade when a compatibility issue could disrupt the experience. The same guidance states that Windows 10 general support ended on October 14, 2025; that date is not a CPU requirement, but it matters when deciding whether to remain on that OS.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute5. Diagnose a failed check before considering a hardware change
If the OS checker says the device is ineligible, identify the specific failed requirement. If the CPU is the blocker, ask the computer or motherboard manufacturer whether the exact system supports a replacement processor and which part is approved. Socket fit or matching a processor brand is not enough to establish compatibility; the manufacturer can confirm support for that system. Microsoft directs customers to their OEM for confirmation of which Windows OS is available for a specific device. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements support page includes this guidance.

How to compare two operating systems fairly
When deciding between OS options, compare their criteria side by side rather than comparing GHz alone. Their compatibility methods can be fundamentally different: Windows 11 includes an approved processor-model list, while the Ubuntu guidance cited here emphasizes architecture and a recommended performance floor.
Quick Recap
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Supported processor models or architecture | A CPU can meet a performance floor but still be excluded by a supported-model list or architecture requirement. |
| Minimum CPU performance | Check the exact OS wording and whether the value is a minimum, recommendation, or another kind of guidance. |
| Whole-device checker or hardware list | A CPU result does not account for every system requirement. Use the OS maker’s overall eligibility tool where one is available. |
| Support lifecycle for the release | Hardware compatibility and ongoing OS support are separate questions; confirm the target release is still supported. |
