Check the product and installed version of every Atlassian Data Center deployment, then compare each one with Atlassian’s fixed-version table for CVE-2026-21589. Atlassian’s October 5, 2026 advisory says all versions of the listed products before their applicable fixed release are affected. You do not need to attempt an exploit to determine whether a version is in scope.
Which Atlassian products are affected?
Atlassian identifies an arbitrary file access vulnerability, CVE-2026-21589, in Bitbucket Data Center, Confluence Data Center, Jira Service Management Data Center, Jira Software Data Center, Bamboo Data Center, Crowd Data Center, Crucible, and Fisheye. The flaw can allow unauthenticated access to specific files in the web application root. Exploitation requires advance knowledge of the exact file name and path; the advisory says the vulnerability does not allow directory listing or enumeration. Do not probe a live system to test exposure: identify the product and version instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to check your product and version
- Inventory every installation. Record the product, installed version, and whether it is a Data Center deployment. Include Crucible and Fisheye if you run them. For clustered deployments, account for every relevant node and installation.
- Match each version to its product row below. A version earlier than an applicable fixed release is within the affected scope described by Atlassian. If the installed version is at or beyond a listed fixed release on the relevant release line, the advisory identifies that release as fixed.
- Choose an upgrade target. Upgrade to a listed fixed version or later. Check the relevant product release notes and support constraints before selecting a target; the advisory lists fixed releases but does not rank them or say that each is the latest available.

What to do if you are affected
Upgrade as the primary fix
Plan an upgrade to an applicable fixed release or later, and make sure all affected installations and relevant cluster nodes are covered. Check the release notes for compatibility, supported release paths, and maintenance requirements before scheduling the change.
Reduce exposure while an upgrade is pending
If you cannot patch immediately, restrict external access or remove the instance from internet access where feasible. Atlassian specifically includes publicly accessible instances that require user authentication in this recommendation.

- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
Atlassian also describes temporary mitigations: a traversal-pattern block at a web application firewall (WAF) or proxy; Tomcat RewriteValve configuration for Confluence, Jira Service Management, Jira Software, Bamboo, and Crowd; and a urlrewrite.xml rule for Bitbucket. Back up the relevant configuration files and follow the full product-specific procedure in the advisory. Test the rule, including URL-encoded patterns; do not copy a rule without checking its context and deployment requirements.

How to investigate possible exploitation
Review access logs for requests that match path-traversal patterns. Atlassian says to URL-decode each request line up to two passes and look for .. immediately adjacent to /, , or ::, or use the regular expression provided in its advisory to search raw lines.
