There is no universal compatibility list for every app and file: the answer depends on the exact Chromebook, the app or file format, account setup, and any work or school restrictions. Google calls these devices Chromebooks and their operating system ChromeOS. Use the checks below on the model you plan to use, then test important tasks before relying on it.
Will my apps work on a Chromebook?
Start with the exact model name, not just the manufacturer or product family. Chromebook features vary by model, and a school or workplace administrator may disable features that the hardware otherwise supports.

Check Android apps and the Play Store
- On the Chromebook, open Settings > Apps and look for Google Play preferences. Google says the Play Store is available on only some Chromebooks; if the option is absent, that Chromebook does not work with Android apps. See Google’s Android apps guidance.
- If Play Store preferences appear, search for the specific app and check its listing on that device. Support for Android apps does not mean every app is available or compatible: Google notes that some apps do not work with some Chromebooks.
- If this is a managed school or work device, ask the administrator whether Play Store access is permitted. A device-level feature can still be blocked by policy.
Check web apps
A web app runs in Chrome, but its own requirements still matter. Check whether the service supports ChromeOS and whether the features you need work in the browser; do not assume that a web version has every feature of a Windows or Mac desktop edition.
Check Linux apps only when relevant
For a Linux application or development tool, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Developers and look for Linux development environment. Google describes Linux as a feature for developing software on a Chromebook. It is optional, off by default, unavailable on some devices, and can be prohibited by an administrator. Its documented limitations also matter for particular tools. It is not a general way to run conventional Windows or macOS desktop programs. See Google’s Linux setup and limitations.

Can I use Microsoft Office on a Chromebook?
Google documents two routes for working with Microsoft Office files. Choose based on the app features and storage workflow you need, rather than assuming the desktop Office programs install as they do on Windows or macOS.
| Option | How it works | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 | Connect the Chromebook Files app to OneDrive and use Microsoft 365 apps including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. | OneDrive is required for editing through this setup. Google says these Office files cannot be opened this way while the Chromebook is offline. |
| Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides | Open Microsoft files in the corresponding Google app; the files move to Google Drive. | Google says this workflow cannot open the files while the Chromebook is offline. A basic editor may be available with limited functionality. |
See Google’s instructions for using Microsoft Office files on a Chromebook for setup details. If precise formatting, macros, embedded objects, or a specific PowerPoint feature matters, test a representative file in the route you plan to use.

Can I open my files on a Chromebook?
ChromeOS handles many common document, image, audio, video, archive, and text formats, but an extension alone does not guarantee that every codec, embedded feature, or editing operation will work. Google’s file types and external devices help page lists these formats and relevant limits.
Recommended Free Tools
| File category | Examples listed by Google | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Word and Excel | .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx | Opening a file does not guarantee the editing workflow or advanced formatting you need. |
| PowerPoint | .ppt, .pptx | These are listed as read-only in Google’s general file-type list; use a documented Office or Google-app workflow for editing. |
| Audio and video | .3gp, .mov, .m4v, .m4a, .mp3, .mkv, .ogm, .ogg, .oga, .webm, .wav | Check the specific codec and playback or editing task. Google says AMR, GSM, AVI, and MPEG4 are no longer supported. |
| Images | .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .webp | Confirm that any required editing or embedded information is preserved. |
| Archives, text, and documents | .zip, .rar, .txt, .pdf | Check whether you need only to open the item or also create, edit, or extract it in a particular way. |
For important work, test an actual sample—not just a file with the same extension—and inspect its formatting, media, and other content after opening it.

Will an external drive or peripheral work?
Google lists FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, MTP, and some read-only formats for external storage, but that does not guarantee that every drive, cable, hub, or peripheral will work with every Chromebook. Google cautions that a Chromebook might not support the external storage device you are trying to use.
- Check the drive’s filesystem and whether you need to read, write, or both.
- Check the target model’s ports and the connector, cable, or adapter the device requires.
- Connect the actual device and try the needed workflow before depending on it.
Can I use my Chromebook offline?
Some Google Drive files can be marked available offline. Chromebook Plus also has a My Drive sync setting, subject to available storage. Offline support varies by file type and app, so check that the specific files and tasks you need are available without a connection. Google’s Office guidance specifically says the Microsoft 365 and Google-app workflows described above cannot open Office files while the Chromebook is offline.

How to compare Chromebook models before you buy
For two or more candidates, compare the exact models against your real workload. A brand name or model family is not enough to establish support.

- Apps: Android/Play Store availability, Linux environment support if needed, and compatibility of the exact app.
- Files: extensions and codecs, plus whether you need to view, edit, or preserve specific features.
- Offline use: the apps and file types that work offline, local storage capacity, and required cloud accounts.
- Devices: external-drive filesystem, required ports, and peripheral connectors.
- Administration: whether a school or employer manages the Chromebook and can restrict Play Store or Linux access.
Check Google’s current support information and the app’s availability against the exact model. Feature support and app availability are separate questions: a Chromebook may support Android apps while a particular app remains unavailable or incompatible.
Test the exact tasks you depend on
Before committing to a Chromebook for work, school, or travel, try the important cases on the specific device if possible:
- Install or open the required app and use the features you rely on.
- Open a representative file, edit it if needed, and inspect formatting and embedded content.
- Connect the actual drive or peripheral and complete the intended read, write, or transfer task.
- Repeat the essential app and file tasks offline if you need them without internet access.
This device-specific test catches gaps that a general format list or feature label cannot settle.
