How to Check Whether Unicode Bubble Text Is Accessible to Screen Readers

Unicode bubble letters are separate characters, so test the exact text in its real context. For decoration, use ordinary letters and add circles with styling.

Unicode bubble text is not guaranteed to be read consistently by screen readers. Check the exact characters in the browser or app where they will appear, using the screen reader and language settings relevant to your audience. If the bubbles are only decorative, keep ordinary letters as the text and add the bubble appearance with styling.

What counts as Unicode bubble text?

“Bubble text” often means letters enclosed in circles, such as Ⓐ or ⓐ. These may be distinct Unicode characters, not ordinary letters with circles drawn around them by a font or CSS. Unicode 18.0 identifies the Enclosed Alphanumerics block as U+2460..U+24FF and says its characters include letters and numbers enclosed in graphic forms, most commonly circles. Many were encoded for compatibility with East Asian character sets and intended to function as lettered or numbered bullets. Unicode Standard, Chapter 22

Visually similar text can therefore contain different underlying characters. Unicode says most enclosed symbols are compatibility characters and that circled Latin letters have compatibility decompositions to corresponding letters. That encoding information does not guarantee that a particular screen reader will announce them as ordinary letters.

How to check whether a screen reader can read it

  1. Inspect the actual text. Find out whether it contains enclosed Unicode characters such as Ⓐ or regular letters that have been styled to look circular. If you pasted in a decorative text string, treat its characters as content that needs testing.
  2. Test it where readers will encounter it. Place the exact string in the relevant page, app, post, or input field. Use the target screen reader, speech language, and configuration; a character reference page or visual inspection cannot establish how it will work in your publication context.
  3. Listen for the intended meaning. Check whether the screen reader announces intelligible letters, says unexpected symbol names, or skips characters. Repeat for the screen-reader and browser or app combinations relevant to your audience. WCAG describes accessibility support in terms of interoperability with assistive technology in the relevant human language and supported user agents; this makes support contextual, not a blanket guarantee for every Unicode character or setup. WCAG 2.1
  4. Use readable text for decoration. If readers need to understand a word, use ordinary letters as the underlying content and apply the circles with CSS or rich-text styling. Unicode explains that it encodes plain text rather than general rich-text formatting; markup or styling is the appropriate mechanism for formatting. Unicode FAQ: Ligatures, Digraphs and Presentation Forms
  5. Explain essential symbols. If the special characters themselves are necessary, WAI advises avoiding unfamiliar symbols where possible and recommends appropriate markup and additional support, such as expansions where applicable. Test that version as well. WAI: Use Clear, Unambiguous Formatting and Punctuation

What to record when comparing setups

If you test more than one configuration, record observations rather than generalizing from one result. WCAG’s interoperability framing supports testing in context; the following details make your own results easier to interpret:

  • The speech language and voice settings.
  • Whether the characters were intelligible, spelled out, announced as symbols, or omitted.

This is a practical way to document your checks, not a bubble-text-specific test protocol prescribed by WCAG. No universal spoken result for bubble letters is established by the cited guidance.

Why visual appearance is not enough

A character’s appearance, Unicode encoding, and screen-reader announcement are separate questions. WAI’s supplemental cognitive accessibility guidance advises: “Avoid the use of Roman Numerals and unfamiliar symbols in text where possible.” It is supplemental guidance, not a WCAG conformance requirement.
