If you suspect an AI writing tool is responding to instructions hidden in a document, inspect the original file and then compare the tool’s response on a harmless test with and without the suspect content. Word’s inspection features can reveal some hidden text, but no clean scan proves that every concealment method is absent or that an AI tool ignored content it received.
Why hidden text can affect an AI writing tool
Prompt injection is an attempt to use content supplied to an AI—such as text in a document, webpage, or email—to redirect what the model does. That content may be invisible or difficult to notice in the ordinary view yet still be parsed by an LLM. OWASP describes this risk and discusses hidden or encoded instructions in its LLM01: Prompt Injection overview and prevention guidance.

This possibility does not establish that a particular writing app processed hidden text or that a strange response was caused by an injection. A controlled comparison can show whether the output changes in your test setup; it cannot reveal a proprietary tool’s internal processing or private system instructions.
Check a Word document for hidden or overlooked content
1. Make a copy first
Keep the original unchanged and inspect a copy. Microsoft warns that removing information through Document Inspector may not be reversible with Undo. Review findings before using any removal option.

2. Show text formatted as hidden
In Word desktop for Windows, open File > Options > Display and enable the setting to display hidden text. Review the document, including places beyond the main body. This toggle displays text with hidden formatting; it is not a comprehensive security scan.
3. Run Document Inspector and review its findings
In Word desktop, go to File > Info > Check for Issues > Inspect Document. The inspector can report categories such as hidden-formatted text, comments and revisions, document properties, headers and footers, and some invisible objects. Microsoft’s Document Inspector guidance spells out its scope and limitations.

Microsoft states: “This Inspector cannot detect text that was hidden by other methods (for example, white text on a white background).” It also notes that objects covered by other objects may not be detected. A clean result therefore means only that the inspector did not find items within the checks it performs.
4. Check the rest of the document
Review comments, tracked changes, headers, footers, watermarks, document properties, text boxes, drawings, and other objects. Hidden or overlooked content may be outside the visible body text, and a document can contain structures or encoded text that a rendered preview does not make obvious.

5. Account for Word edition differences
Microsoft’s current support page says Word for Mac does not have Document Inspector and directs Mac users to inspect or change properties manually. Do not assume the Windows inspector workflow or feature coverage is available in every Word edition. Microsoft also documents additional hidden content in some signed documents in its signed-content guidance.
Compare what the file shows with what the AI tool receives
If the writing tool accepts a file upload, inspect the source file itself rather than relying only on the app’s rendered preview. If the app provides extracted text or a plain-text view, compare it with what is visibly present in the document. Unexpected differences are a reason to investigate, not proof of malicious intent. A preview or extracted-text view may not expose every internal representation the tool uses.

Test whether the suspicious text changes the output
- Use a non-sensitive copy. Do not upload confidential material just to test a suspicion.
- Choose a harmless, specific writing task. Avoid requests that send, publish, share, or otherwise act on the document.
- Keep the task and settings constant. Compare a run using the copy with the suspicious material and a run using a copy where that material has been removed or neutralized.
- Compare the responses. Note whether the result changes in a way that appears related to the text, then repeat if needed to see whether the change is reproducible.
A repeatable difference suggests the content may be affecting the output under those conditions. It does not prove the exact cause, establish what the service internally processed, or expose its private instructions. If the result does not change, that likewise does not prove the content was never processed.

Reduce risk when using AI writing tools
- Give an assistant only the document access and permissions needed for the task.
- Use specific instructions about what it should do with source material rather than broad, open-ended requests.
- Review consequential actions before confirming them. Do not let an assistant send, publish, or share material merely because a document contains an instruction to do so.
OpenAI recommends limiting access, giving specific instructions, and reviewing confirmations in its prompt-injection guidance. Anthropic’s November 24, 2025 article on browser-use defenses describes hidden white text in email as one example and says prompt injection remains an ongoing challenge. For organizations using Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 2, Microsoft documents prompt-injection detection for inbound email before it reaches a user or AI assistant; this is an email-security capability, not a universal document scanner or a feature of every writing app. See Microsoft’s Defender for Office 365 documentation.
