To check whether a Dell Container Storage Modules (CSM) deployment is exposed to unauthenticated access, identify the installed component versions, determine which clients can reach its services, review authentication and Kubernetes access controls, and compare each component against the relevant Dell security advisory. A vulnerable version does not by itself prove that a cluster is reachable, and a reachable endpoint does not by itself prove that authentication is absent. Both questions require deployment-specific evidence.
What this check can—and cannot—establish
Dell describes Container Storage Modules (CSM) as software that extends enterprise storage capabilities to Kubernetes. This guide is a defensive review of a particular cluster, not a claim that all CSM installations are exposed. Documentation and advisories identify risks and recommended controls, but they cannot establish whether your cluster’s endpoints are reachable or unauthenticated. That requires reviewing the running configuration and comparing it with the advisory for the exact component and version.

Dell’s support materials list CSM 1.18 administrator and release documentation, while the security configuration checklist covered below is version 1.17. Apply that checklist only after confirming it is relevant to your installed release. Start from Dell’s CSM support documentation.
1. Record the installed CSM components and versions
Do not rely on a single broad label such as “CSM version.” Dell advisories distinguish components and affected ranges. Record the Operator version, Helm chart version, Authorization module version, enabled modules, namespaces, and deployment configuration. Use your approved cluster administration process and the release-specific Dell materials.
#1 Best Overall
- Laptop Lock for Dell laptops fits seamlessly into Dell and Alienware laptops with the wedge type lock slot
- Resettable 4-wheel Number code with 10, 000 possible combinations. Push-button design for one-handed engagement to easily attach lock
- Unique lock engagement creates the strongest connection between the lock head and slot; 6' long carbon steel cable is cut-resistant and anchors to desk, table or any fixed structure
- Independently verified and tested for industry-leading standards in torque/pull, foreign implements, lock lifecycle, corrosion, key strength and other environmental condition
- Identify whether CSM was installed or managed through the Operator, Helm charts, or both.
- Record the versions of the Operator, chart, and Authorization module separately.
- List enabled modules and the namespaces containing CSM workloads and services.
- Preserve the relevant deployment settings so that later comparisons reflect the running configuration, not just intended manifests.
Dell’s CSM release and version documentation separates release materials and versioned manuals. Compare each recorded component with the corresponding advisory range, rather than treating one component’s fixed version as proof that all components are fixed.
2. Map which clients can reach CSM endpoints
Authentication and network reachability are separate checks. Identify the services for CSM Authorization and storage management, then establish which source networks and workloads can connect to them. Review the effective configuration across the cluster and its surrounding network.

- Computer lock for HP, Lenovo, Acer, Asus and other brands; not compatible with Dell or Alienware (see part # K68008WW)
- Resettable 4-wheel Number code with 10, 000 possible combinations. Push-button design for one-handed engagement to easily attach lock
- 6’ long carbon steel cable is cut-resistant and anchors to desks, tables, or any fixed structure
- Attaches to laptops, desktops, TVs, monitors, hard drives, docking stations, projectors or any other device featuring a Kensington standard size security slot
- Independently verified and tested for industry-leading standards in torque/pull, foreign implements, lock lifecycle, corrosion, key strength and other environmental condition
- Kubernetes Services, especially externally reachable service types.
- Ingresses, OpenShift Routes where applicable, and external load balancers.
- Cluster, cloud, and perimeter firewall rules that allow or deny traffic.
- NetworkPolicies in every CSM namespace, including which pods they select and what ingress and egress they actually permit.
Dell’s version 1.17 checklist marks default-deny NetworkPolicies on all CSM namespaces as a critical control. A policy file present in source control is not enough: verify that the running policy selects the intended pods and that no other rule or network path permits traffic. See Dell’s CSM Security Configuration Guide 1.17 and confirm applicability to your release.
Keep this review authorized and configuration-based. Do not probe a third-party or production endpoint without authorization.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
3. Check authentication, authorization, and secrets
Review the Authorization module’s configuration and the boundary around its APIs. Determine which administrators and in-cluster services are intended to use them, and whether those callers must authenticate and receive only the permissions they need.
- Inspect JWT signing-secret storage and access, and confirm that token lifetime is no more than 30 minutes if the version 1.17 checklist applies.
- Review Kubernetes RBAC roles, role bindings, and service-account privileges for least privilege.
- Restrict which users and workloads can read Kubernetes Secrets, including CSM-related secrets.
- Check service-account token automount settings and disable automatic mounts where they are not needed.
Dell’s version 1.17 security checklist identifies least-privilege RBAC and restricted Secrets access as critical controls. Treat the token lifetime and other checklist items as guide-specific settings, not as universal defaults for every CSM release.

5. Match each component to the correct Dell advisory
Use the advisory for the affected component and CVE. A remediation version in one notice should not be carried over to another component or vulnerability.
| Advisory and issue | Affected component and versions stated by Dell | Remediation information stated by Dell | What the notice means for your review |
|---|---|---|---|
| DSA-2026-234, CVE-2026-40710; hard-coded credentials and remote information disclosure. Dell lists a CVSS base score of 10.0. | CSM Operator 1.6.0 through 1.16.3; Helm Charts 1.11.0 through 1.16.3. | Dell lists version 1.17.0 or later as remediated. | Check Operator and chart versions separately. An affected version does not establish that the deployment is currently remotely reachable. |
| DSA-2026-448, multiple CSM Authorization vulnerabilities, including missing authentication for critical functions and a hard-coded credential issue. Dell lists CVE-2026-63688 and CVE-2026-63692 with CVSS base scores of 10.00 each. | The advisory identifies CSM Authorization 2.4.0 issues. Consult the advisory for its complete affected-version details. | Use the remediation specified in the live advisory for the particular CVE and component; do not infer a fixed version from DSA-2026-234. | Assess the Authorization module independently and review the advisory’s full CVE, impact, and remediation details. |
The figures and version ranges above are Dell-published advisory information, not independent test results. See the full notices: DSA-2026-234 and DSA-2026-448. Advisory details and supported versions can change, so check the current notice before deciding a component is fixed.
How to interpret the findings
Build the conclusion from separate evidence: the component’s version, the endpoint’s effective reachability, and the authentication boundary described by the relevant advisory. For each issue, document the affected component and version, attacker position and authentication requirement, potential confidentiality, integrity, or availability impact, Dell-directed remediation, and any remaining compensating controls. Do not use a CVSS score alone as a substitute for this deployment-specific assessment.

If an installed component falls within an affected range, follow the remediation in that specific Dell advisory. Restrict reachability as a compensating measure while updating. For CVE-2026-54472, Dell’s DSA-2026-448 recommends immediate rotation of JWT signing secrets. Preserve relevant logs and record actions through your organization’s incident-response process.
